Today is a sad day. I tried using my BeoSound 9000 system after months of non-use, only to discover that the carriage no longer functions properly. It jams between CDs and cannot return to the upper-most CD position. The CD mechanism and laser, however works perfectly. Once it can pick up a CD, it plays fine and navigating through the CD is perfect.
I'd fix it if I used it more often, but all my music is on my computer, which plays through my BeoVision 7-55. I'm sure I can find a buyer who would like to repair or part it out, especially since it is a MK1 with a recently replaced CD mechanism that still works.
BeoLab 5, BeoVision 7-55 MK2, BeoSound 5 Encore, BeoSound 9000, BeoLab Penta III, BeoLab 8000, BeoLab 6000, BeoLab 2, BeoLab 7-6, BeoSound 8, BeoTime (analog clock), Beo 4 remote.
I'm sorry to hear that. Like you, I have a Mk I, and like you I seldom use it's CD changer, and never use the tuner as there are no stations worth listening to where I live. The difference is I would absolutely pay to have it repaired and keep it in service as long as possible because I just value it so much. Probably doesn't make practical sense but I'd do it anyway.
A few years ago I had the laser assembly replaced while it was in the shop having the glass put back on so hopefully it will last a while longer.

I'm afraid I'm recovering from the BeoVirus.
If its a mk 1, you have had it a long time. Unless you need the space I would retire this icon where it is.
I bought it in 1996. It's 18 years old, but still looks new... on the outside, at least.
That's when I got mine, 96, quickly followed by my BL8000s. A good friend of mine worked at the shop that sold B&O back then (not a dedicated store, they sold lots of other lines). I remember him saying I had to come down that afternoon, just had to, as he was unboxing and setting up the BS9000 they had just got in. He was really excited, and after I got there and watched him unpack it I understood why. The most radical thing I'd seen in audio, just stunning.
Mine still is cosmetically flawless, and works perfectly, so if it did die and was non-repairable I'd retire it in place, it looks too good in the living room.
a timeless masterpiece
Who can say they've had an appliance for 18 years before it gave in. This is proof of the build quality of B&O. And people scoff at the prices we willingly pay.
Maybe I'll just box it up for now and have it repaired for nostalgia at a later date.
Well, I decided to bring my BS-9000 back from the dead and mate it with my Penta III speakers upstairs. If anyone wishes to trade a BeoSound 5 Encore, I'll consider getting rid of it. It now works again. :-)
