Hi

From what I read of each of the manuals (yes i need a better hobby lol) of the new generation speakers, BL, 17, 18, 20 where they have optical in and optical out (the previous gen may have had this, i'm not sure), would it be possible to connect a television (non B&O) to this and then daisy chain say a couple of speakers ?

If so would this be any benefit to say of having 5 channel sound (if you used 4/5 speakers), or because there is no surround sound decoder, this is sort of null and void?

Thanks in advance

Hi,

Although the new BeoLab loudspeakers with Toslink connections are designed so that you can, indeed, daisy-chain your two loudspeakers, the Toslink input accepts PCM S/P-DIF only. This has two implications:

  1. Your source must do the volume regulation (many television brands and models do not volume-regulate their digital outputs- please consult your manual)
  2. No more than 2 channels are available on the Toslink signal. For example, an AC-3 (aka Dolby Digital) or DTS-encoded signal (whether 2.0 or 5.1 channels) will not be decoded by the loudspeakers. I think that, if you do send such a signal, you'll get nothing out of the loudspeaker.

So, you'll still need a surround decoder. And, if you want to use a surround decoder with a digital connection to the loudspeakers, you'll have to find one with digital outputs - although I don't think that such a thing exists due to content protection legalities.

Cheers

Short answer: no!

But they have WiSA, which is a digital (wireless) connection as well.
