Hey Beoworlders,
I got the BeoLab 8000 Speakers (bought in 1996) and would like to connect them with the Philips 5500 Series TV. As far as I know there is a Powerlink cable connection on the speakers. Atm the speakers are connected with the BeoSound Ouverture CD/Tape/Tuner
Is there a possibility to connect them to the TV via a special cable or adapter? I've been searching for this a long time but didn't really find something what convinced me.
Would this cable or the adapter work? Or do you have any other idea how it would work? :)

Alex,
Unless the oldest BL8000 were different, they should have *both* a powerlink and a line connection, so that you can come straight from an RCA output (if your TV is equipped, which i presume it is based on the cable you were trying to buy) of any line level device and go straight to your BL8000s. Make sure to change your switch to LINE. When they are connected via LINE, they will sense the signal automatically and go on and off by themselves (or they should).
Ian.
Connect your speakers to the Ouverture with powerlink cables, connect the TV sound output to the AUX input on the ouverture and select AUX input on the ouverture.

I may be wrong, but it appears from the Phillips web site that the 5500 TV only has a digital audio out. In that case, a wouldn't a Digital to Analog converter be required?
Hi,
Ron is quite correct, the simplest option (in terms of connection and daily use) is to keep the speakers connected to the Ouverture, then simply add a cable from the TV to the Ouverture Aux socket to share the speakers with the TV.
It is worth noting that Beolab speakers should only have a direct connection to one device at once under most circumstances (there are some exceptions, eg. Beolab 5 which has multiple input switching).
Also, please note that RCA audio outputs on most non-B&O TVs are NOT suitable for direct connection to Beolab speakers, as they are normally fixed line-level outputs, which would leave the speakers fixed at full volume with no way to turn them down. (Again, there are some exceptions, eg. some Loewe TVs have variable audio outs, also Beolab 5 can accept fixed volume inputs, as they have their own volume control).
I can help with connections from any TV to the Ouverture, please get in touch via my banner at the end of the page if you need any help finding the cables you need.
Kind regards, Steve.

There's another easy solution aswell, buy some RCA to 3.5mm cable which you can get in various lengths and connect the RCA phono plugs to the line in sockets of the beolab 8000s.
you then connect the 3.5mm jack to the headphone socket on the tv using the headphone volume to control the output to the speakers.
Just be sure if you go that route that you have switched the speakers to "line" and that you have the tvs volume off and the headphone volume not to high to start gradually turn it up to desired volume level.

I was actually posting from my phone earlier so I did not gauge the full extent of the post. It sounded to me like the OP wanted to use the TV *in place* of the Ouverture to provide sound to the BL8000s.
If this is the case, markiedee seems to have the simplest solution, as you can obtain that cable anywhere cheaply, AND it would afford you the ability to use your TVs actual volume control to adjust the volume (and this Phillips TV, unlike MANY today, *DOES* still have a headphone jack).
If you want to *keep* the Ouverture, then you would need to go from the 3.5mm minijack on the TV to the AUX in of your Ouverture as I now see that your TV has L/R RCA *inputs* for the VGA socket, these are not outputs, and will not be of any use for this application. Then you could keep the TV volume at a fixed level and control volume with the ouverture itself. Your TV output volume will more than likely be fixed as was mentioned above, so you must not deliver a full line level output signal to the BL8000s.
Finally, there's no real reason to do this (unless the headphone jack on the TV is in a location that isn't terribly appealing to look at), but you can also come out of the TV from the optical output port to a small optical digital to RCA analog converter box (I use this method with my Beocenter 9500 connected to a Samsung F8500 television which *only* has the fixed optical audio output port) and then to a powerlink to female RCA L/R input cable for the AUX port of the Ouverture. This box is the one I use (I obtained mine at Radio Shack but Amazon has it for less)...
Anything powerlink related, Steve can provide easily. Any RCA or minijack cables he can make or can be easily obtained at most stores in almost any part of the world (or Amazon, as you had already checked).
Thanks for your help so far :)
I'm not quite sure which one is the sound output, do you mean the audio output or the output of the headphones?
thanks alot so far! sounds really easy :)
what do you exatly mean with 'changing' the speakers to line? just switch the cables like put out the powerlink and put in the rca phono plugs in the line?
thanks alot!
the headphone output is at the back of the tv so it won't be visible or disturbing..
I didn't really get your 2nd proposition.. could you describe in the picture of available connections I posted before what do you mean with '3,5mm minijack' ?
So if I got it right, I'd need a cable like markiedee proposed and just have to connect the TV to the Ouverture and it would function? :)
btw your guys are great, I'm really thankful!

In the diagram above (and I should note that the diagram shows the headphone jack as being on the side), the 3.5mm minijack connection is just another term for the type of connector most commonly used for the headphone jack. The cable markiedee is talking about lets you go directly from the TV to the BL8000s with*out* the Ouverture involved at all. If you want to use the Ouverture, you will need a cable that goes from the headphone jack (3.5mm minijack stereo) and ultimately terminates in a powerlink socket for your Ouverture's AUX input. Then when you select AUX on the Ouverture, you can hear your TV on your BL8000s, if you change to CD then your TV will obviously be replaced by the sound of a CD playing on your Ouverture. This is the best overall and simplest way to do it, and Steve at Sounds Heavenly can provide you the cable(s) you need to make this happen.
When I talked about setting the BL8000s to "line", there is actually a switch in the connector area of your BL8000s that selects between "L, R and LINE". Line would be used if you go from the headphone jack of the TV, to the RCA input of the BL8000. You must be on "LINE" for that to work. But if you use the AUX input on the Ouverture, then you don't need to use the LINE input on the BL8000s at all.
Hope that clears it up a bit.
On your philips tv like most tvs there's always usually a headphone socket, with the cable I've suggested you would split the cable to a point so one end goes to the left speaker and the other to the right.
the 3.5mm jack is what you plug into the headphone socket on your tv. On your beolab 8000s they have left, right and line.
you switch the speakers role to left or right if your using bang-olufsen products. "Line" is what you would switch it to if your not using bang-olufsen products.
so you would switch both speakers to "line" if your setting it up in the way that I've suggested. Hope this helps a little.
Yes, this is quite correct. If you remove the Ouverture, the only way to connect the speakers directly to your TV is to use the headphone socket on the TV, as this is the only socket where the volume of the sound can be controlled. You can connect a pair of Beolab 8000 speakers to the headphone socket of your TV using this cable:-
http://soundsheavenly.co.uk/bando-ipodtolab.htm (Past Speaker Models option)
Please set both speakers to "Line" mode using the small switch next to the input sockets (this is usually the lowest position of the switch on Beolab 8000 speakers).
Wow now it clears up :)
I think the best would be to connect the TV via 3,5mm jack with the Ouverture. Do I need a cable from 3,5mm jack to powerlink or to AUX?
Do you have maybe a link or so to a fitting cable? They should ship it also to Switzerland ;)
Thanks for all your help, you're amazing!! :)
Yes, I can help! This cable will allow you to connect the TV headphone socket to the Aux socket on the back of your Ouverture and it includes free Worldwide shipping:-
http://soundsheavenly.co.uk/bando-ipod.htm
Please set the TV volume to maximum when connecting to the B&O system – this is normal when using a headphone output with a home audio system due to the low output levels produced by the TV.
To listen to the TV, simply press "A.Aux" on the B&O keypad, or select this on the B&O remote control by pressing the "LIST" button until the display shows "A.AUX", then pressing "GO".
Great! So I will order this and hope it will function :)Thanks alot so far. btw how long will be the shipping?
I just tried to find the "A.Aux" in "List" but only found 'V.Aux'. is it similar?
And the behind the Ouverture there is only in the middle one free Powerlink Connection. Under the Ouverture in the front is an Aux Connection
Is the cable still the right one?:)
This cable must be used in the A.Aux socket, this is in the row of sockets on the back of the Ouverture. Please do not use the front socket (this is for headphones only) or Powerlink (this is for speakers only). If your Beo4 remote has a DVD button (mk.2 or mk.3 versions) then you can add new commands to the list (I can provide instructions on request with your order to explain how to do this).
Shipping from UK to Europe usually takes around 3 to 7 days by Airmail.
I just checked one more time the backside of the Ouverture and made pictures.
Is 'A.Aux' the very right connection 'AUX' ?
here you can see the names of the connections
I order it if it would function, so a instruction for installation would be perfect than :)
and further, if I would pay with paypal, where can I give you the information about the shipping adress. or does it all go through the paypal process?
Yes, A.Aux is the same as Aux on your sockets. Please don't worry about shipping addresses, they can all be sorted out easily within the paypal (or card payment) process. If you have any questions about buying cables, please feel free to drop me an email via my link at the foot of the page.
Great, I just ordered it
I'll ask you again for the connection instructions etc if I can't fix it by myself.
but thanks alot so far! :)
Thanks!
Just packing your order now ready to ship in the morning
If you need any further help, please feel free to ask.
Thanks alot! It just arrived this morning and I wanna try it!
could you instruct step by step? :)
Glad to hear everything arrived safely. No problem! Please drop me an email and I will be pleased to reply with all the help you need.
Hi
Just wanted to check my understanding of this scenario is correct.
I have the same sort of situation - I want to use my BL8000 speakers (currently connected to my Ouverture) to play the tv sound on an 'occasional' basis (films , music etc) leaving the tv internal speakers available for everyday use (news, chat etc)
My ouverture is on the other side of the room so a 16m cable or so will be required)
I have a TX2 deck connected to the overture via aux in currently, so I'd need a splitter to input both (only using one at a time of course)
From reading the above posts it looks like a good option to retain the tv speakers for general use (and have the option of external speakers) would be to use the toslink optical output via a digital to audio converter, run that cable to the overture and select aux when I want the bl8000 's to sound.
The tv is a samsung 40" . There is a headphone socket and that turns off the internal speakers so that's not ideal - plus its positioned nicely right at the back - nice one Samsung!, there is also a scart socket which I understand I could get an audio signal from but not sure if thats controllable at all from the tv menus. The sound menu allows the choice of 'external speaker' where the internal speakers are turned off and menus disabled or 'standard speaker' where both are active and menus and volume control are enabled. I suspect the optical output is a level line output so the volume of that will be controlled by the overture. So thats looking like the favourite option (apart from the fact I'll need to run a long cable to the overture alongside the power link cable going the other way) Shame I can't run to a B&O tv at the moment as I could just master link them together but hey ho.
The only thing that could be an issue is the manual says that there may be a 'sound echo' if using both internal and external (I guess that's 'latency') but if its an issue then select external only. I don't think there would be any benefit to have both internal and external together anyway.
So have I understood that all correctly and am I going in the right direction with it?
Thanks
DJ
Hi DJ,
Yes, this all sounds realistic. I would suggest using the SCART socket if possible (if this provides an audio output, then the socket will normally have a symbol showing an arrow pointing out of a diamond shape next to the socket) as you don't need an external converter to use the SCART socket as you would with the optical output. Both the optical and SCART sockets provide fixed (not volume controlled) line level outputs which will be permanently switched on in the TV menu.
This would allow you to connect to the Beosound via the Aux sockets (either directly or via a switch box) to play the TV through the B&O speakers when required, with separate control of the TV speakers via the TV remote.
I can help with converters, cables and switchers as required, depending on your preferred option. Please feel free to contact me via my sponsor link at the foot of this page if you would like any advice on the cables to choose.
Thanks Steve
I'll email you you - I suspect you didn't get the one I sent you yesterday re the same subject as I sent it from work.
If you don't get one shortly let me know.
ThanksDJ
Thanks for your email, I did get this and I replied to you quite late last night. Please feel free to drop me another email if you would like me to re-send this to your other email address.
Yes you did - went to a different folder duh. Good to see its not just me burning the midnight oil in the office.
