Hi,

I got my BL9 a few days ago. They are very nice but I notice when they are on that there is a slight noise from the treble and mid speakers. It annoys me a bit. Can't understand how such noises can be acceptable on such expensive speakers. Perhaps the BL20 is better?

I also notice sound like this on my BeoLit 12, and I can hear it on some other beolabs too.

Perhaps it is just a thing we "have to" live with because of the built in amps always being on full power?

I do notice this sound form my V1 if I put my head close to it, and the same with the avant but on the BL9 it is very much more noticeable in the couch. It makes me feel like it is covering everything else.

I have a pair of thick PL-RJ45 cables going from my Avant to each of the BL9´s today. I want to use the thinner ICE-PL cables and connect one via the other BL9. Do anyone think that would affect sound quality?

On a side note, when I had the left speaker connected to PL1 on my Avant it would turn yellow every now and then (mainly when changing speaker groups) - and turn on with the TV (the speaker is not in the default speaker group). It stopped doing that (I think) when I connected it to the PL4 input instead.

I don't notice any such noises on my 9s, or my 8000s or BL2000s. If I put my ear right up to the drivers with the gain set fairly high and no signal I can hear a little analog hiss/noise, about what I would expect, but move even a couple of inches further away than ear over the driver and I can't hear any noise.

Make sure you get Powerlink Mk 3 cables though, I do know the 9s will indeed make a buzzing noise that's audible if they aren't connected with Mk 3 cables with the better ground. After I went to Mk 3 cables, silence.

Agree with Jeff. Even something as old as my Penta IIIs has a very slightly audible "white noise" if my ear is like an inch from the drivers, and so does the BL5 and so did the BL4000 when I had them and so on whenever the lights are "green" and the amps are on but with no signal coming through. Certainly from more than a couple of inches away I can't hear that. My B&W 802Ds also do this FWIW when the amp is on. However, on my 4000s I had the wrong Mark cable at one point and I did get an audible annoying noise until I got the right one.

Strange then that I hear it so well. It is always the same level, it does not change with the volume of the TV. I have a pair of penta and they don't make that sound, not so much at least.

Perhaps the cables are the issue but I don't think that is the case. Will try to use a pair of thinner MK3 cables - perhaps they will work better but it seems odd that thin cables would be better than the real RJ45-DIN cables I got form the store (that are incredible thick compared to the other cables). Like ordinary network cables.

Probably won't have time for it any time soon tough. I am leaving for Belgium and a few other places on friday Smile.

I noticed a quiet buzzing sound as soon as i connected the thicker MKII powerlink to my 9's, you MUST use the thin MKIII cables, i suspect this is your problem, if not check all electrical goods plugged in within the vicinity and unplug them all introducing them one by one.

Thanks for all advice. I changed the thick cables I got with my speakers to MK3 (thin with triangle) + adapter from RJ45-DIN and the buzz is completely different now. I can still hear some buzzing noise but very, very light. Almost not audible from my sofa. Very nice.

Now another thing. I have been thinking about changing the colour of my Beolab 9s but can't decide which colour to choose. I currently have black ones and I am probably thinking mostly about changing to white. Anyone here who knows how to change the covers - and if the warranty is voided? Since my BL9s are completely new I donut want to void the warranty.

I think they would look less big in white perhaps. But they do look quite okey in black too so I might just keep them like that. Oh how annoying it is to never be perfectly happy :).

In order to change the covers you have to remove the black plastic cover on top of the speakers behind the tweeters, it's a smallish crescent moon shaped thing. That reveals the bolts holding the tweeter assemblies on, they take an odd sized allen wrench, I think it was either a 3.5 mm or 2.5mm, been a little while since I've done this. Pull the bolts, then pull gently straight up on the tweeter housings, the whole tweeter housing will lift straight up, it has a connector that pushes into a receptacle on the top of the speaker. Then when it's removed you just pull straight up on the grills and they come off and look like a traffic cone. I think you may need to pull the cable covers on the backs of the speakers too now that I think of it. Assembly is the reverse, frets on, tweeters on, bolts in, and little moon shaped cover on.

Not hard, just be gentle and don't force anything.

Thanks Jeff! How do you remove the black plastic cover? I don't want to damage it.

Sounds quite easy to change the covers. Great instruction!

See attached instructions. A couple of attention points maybe:

- you seem to need a special tool to remove the cover top

- you may need a specific screw driver to remove the lens

- you need to remove the lens, which scares me as I would not want to damage it or to be unable to reconnect it thereafter

Great info Js. I wonder if these screwdrivers and tool is included with new covers. I might need to rush to order since BL9 is not in production any more. But the covers are quite expensive so I might skip it for now anyway. And I am afraid the white one has much more visible perforations for the speakers.

Can anyone comment on how complex/delicate it is to remove and reconnect the lens?

I think you could use a very small, thin bladed screwdriver to pull the plastic cover on top, something like a flat bladed screwdriver for eyeglasses. Just be very gentle and take it a little at a time to keep from marring the plastic.

That 2.5mm allen wrench is a doozy, fortunately I have a kit of about every kind of oddball socket around and I had one, really surprised me that it was a half size thing. I mean, usually if they want you to not be able to do it they use a Torx socket!

Pulling the tweeter is easy, once the screws are out just pull straight up gently and it pops off. It's not hard or hard to get back on in my experience. I had to change from red to black frets on mine, not hard at all. There's no wires connecting the tweeter to the speaker, it has a male plug on the tweeter and a female receptacle on the main speaker body that mate together to connect the tweeter and its LED light to the main speaker body.

Your dealer should have the plastic tool, if you sweet talk them maybe they'll let you have it or borrow it if you want to do it the official way.

Well, if it worked for you, why would it not for me?  Smile

That is great to know, many thanks  Smile

I am not an expert, so where would I have a chance to find one?  Unsure

Thanks again!
