Hi,

I had been lurking for a mint-ish Beomaster 2000 (type 2801) and one is now mine for a miserly €50.

Everything should work but the seller informed me that there in a problem with the dial which doesn't do anything. Right.

I've done my homework and it seems that the plastic in the dial mechanism becomes brittle and breaks into pieces.

But what I'd like to know is whether someone has found a solution, or, alternatively, has the parts, or any clues on how to fix this durably.

Also, it seems that a preset button has become loose. I think some neoprene glue will fix that.

Thanks!

Jacques

Well done! It's an extremely nice machine Smile

More likely the dial pointer has stuck on its rails (yes, dry grease) and the cord has snapped or slips on the dial disc pulley.

The buttons always come loose. They are otherwise easy to glue back on, but it will take some effort to get them fit flush on the surface. They sit offset to the switch mechanics... you'll know when you see it.

Expect to replace a few bulbs and do a clean & relubricate job to all the preset trimmers. I got two of these Beomasters way back, and out of the 10 presets, one (1) worked properly at arrival.

Thanks. My broadband connection being what it is, I often have that sort of issue.

Thanks for the tips Mika. I shall keep you informed of course. It will look nice next to my (absolutely mint) Beocord 2200!

Err... Not far from it, yes. But I still have another 30 square metre space above the garage to finish. No money to do it right now, but a nice project for when my three children (18, 18, 17) have finished their studies - and got their driving licences, which cost an arm and a leg.

I got a mint white one for just a little more (70 for the BM + 30 for the matching Beogram). I'm sure you all saw them sell on eBay for just a bit more. Stick out tongue

Anyway, fix for the dial: Here's what I did:

I might look like a kludge, I assure you it's not and it still works fine. Tried fixing the original mount for the little wheel a dozen time, it usually broke again about a week later. So I finally just removed the whole corner from the dial plastic and replaced it with a new mount.

Oh, and if you're going to replace the lamps - get the kit from Martin. Or just don't touch them, if they work. The main problem is the dial light. Other issues with this model are stuck presets. You'll see. Wink

Oh, that part! Surprisingly, mine didn't have problems with those, but I can believe those will be the first ones to snap if the dial cord doesn't. And you'll need to pull them quite a bit when restringing Unsure

The indicator lamp circuits were designed by somebody after way too many Tuborgs. It will only work with bulbs of the correct ratings, and interestingly the service manual doesn't specify them all... I got lucky, but simply getting them all from Dillen will be far easier Big Smile

Yes, Martin of course!

Well, before transit the bulbs work. Will they when Mrs Post lady drops it on my threshold? Laughing

Methinks they won't! Unsure, as usual. Oh well, at least I know where to find Martin! Wink

I like mine - one of my favorite pieces and it wasnt too hard to sort thru - bought my lamp kit from martin and yes I had the same problem with the tuning string as Mika describes. easy to fix if you have 3 hands. A bit of a bear if you only have two.

Yes -it's always an issue with the tuning strings in those old Beomasters...
- and the gear wheels and string in the late Beogram tangentials.

The third hand belongs to my patient and beautiful wife, who is always ready to help me when I need another hand!.

Mika is quite right - impossible with only 2 hands.

My BM3400 (Type 2802) tuning string posts were broken as well - I built up them with layers of 24-hour slow-set epoxy, and layered one ply of cotton bandage fabric between each layer to give strength.  That was about 6 years ago. Still holding up just fine.

I replaced the old frayed string with fishing tackle!

Actually it was Steffen this time, but I'm sure I've said the same a few times over earlier Big Smile

Digital tuners probably caused the demise of an entire profession of human octopuses (octopi?).

I tried fishing line as well, but it turned out to stretch too much. I'm sure there are better types around than the one I tried. For these Beomasters, I think I used the famous English "Bear Brand" sewing thread. I managed to source some of the real thing later but didn't bother replacing it just for the sake of it.

These Beomasters aren't actually the worst to restring, there's plenty of space and the routing isn't too complicated. The incorrect thread was a bit too slippery, and I found that I needed to have an extra turn around the dial disc pulley before the friction was enough to move the dial smoothly.

An extra annoyance is to get the top aligned properly so that the buttons don't have uneven gaps on top & bottom!

Hi,

Mika was right: the grease on the shaft had dried and the slider was indeed stuck to it! No further damage.

Now I have the presets to fix (they are all stuck) and of course the odd red caps to replace.

Also the right channel feels warmer so I'll have to adjust quiescent currents before closing the bonnet!

Pictures will be posted tomorrow.

Not needing to restring it makes the job easier Smile

If I remember right, the presets were so frozen that the plastic thumb wheels were slipping on the shaft. You can carefully pull the wheels off, blow some contact cleaner on the (supposed to be) moving parts, let it soak a while and then turn with pliers. They'll start moving, and then you can clean all the extra gunk, push the thumb wheels back on and they'll still have enough grip to work very nicely.

Prepare to be surprised how good (and loud) that Beomaster can sound!

Yes my presets were all stuck as well. I use a cleaner/lubricant and eventually they all work free again.

It can really drive a set of S-75's nicely.

That one has to go...

The string path...

The stuck slider...

And finally, the presets. The wheels were all broken, so I stuck them back with a tiny drop of cyano. Now working perfectly.

What I don't like is the fact that you have to play with the position of the bonnet to center the button row up, down, left and right. Not so clever methinks.

I have not tested with speakers yet, but the sound coming through headphones is very good indeed (tested with FM and Beocord 2200).

It must be quite rare - all of the 3 versions I have, regularly pops up on various marketplaces on the net. But I've never seen the teak version.

Now I have to look for one of those too...It never stops, does it...Super Angry Wink

What would the best period turntable be to use with this gorgeous Beomaster?

Just an innocent question... Whistle

As an aside, I've just finished re-capping my Revox A77. What a machine this is. Are there any Beocords to seriously compete? (No stupid idler wheels or belts that break, stretch or melt, three DD motors....) Confused

I would go for a BG 2000 type 524x, square look, same period, and the lovely pin platter.

Timeouts are totally random, and, not so frequently , server not available or server maybe too busy

Of course, if you want to go audiophile, this is a superb platform to do.

Replace all the signal-path carbon resistors with metal-film, and all the capacitors with Wima MKS2.

The results are stunning (and truly addictive).

Hey, that's a funny looking BM2000 ;-)

Would that be an improvement or just a change in character?

This Beomaster already sounds good as it is, quite lively in fact! The radio section is very sensitive too.

I must admit Jacques I tend to change those red ROE caps on site however, IMO there is rarely any change in sound quality! - and this I can vouch for by doing comparative tests between two identical (as near as possible) units (in this case master 6000's, chinese vs good quality, and two 8000's, original vs good quality!) I have also tried many different capacitors from generic chinese jobs to Nichicon muse & pana FC's for instance and again with no discernible change in sound - this is using two identical amps connected via a DPDT switch to the same pair of speakers :) Maybe it is me, or the room I test in, or my source or a combination of everything, but I suspect not!

Could make for an interesting Beoworld get-together some time - a couple of 4400's / 8000's or whatever each with different capacitor types and a double blind test :)

Interestingly I do use the panas and nichicons as my choice mostly because I can get them bulk for a similar price to generic brands and I can get them from the same source, easy to order etc. and if doing a recap for someone I can offer a certain level of comfort that they are getting a quality replacement component!
