I have downloaded Beoplayer on my laptop but when i hook up the beosound 2 via the usb port it never recognizes it. I don't understand why. My laptop doesn't have a cd rom drive. Is it crucial using the beoplayer software?

I do not believe that the CDROM is essential.
When you installed Beoplayer where did you get the software from ? Did you download the BeoPlayer from the B&O site or did you have access to a CD that came with the BeoSound 2 ?
When you ran the installation process did you wait for the instructions to connect the BeoSound 2 ? Or had you already tried attaching the BeoSound 2 before the software or before the instructions ?
What level of Windows are you trying to install this on ?

If you downloaded BeoPlayer, that was the free software that promoted the concept of MP3s and the use of B&O.
The BeoSound 2 had its on CD with additional software that included all the support for the BeoSound 2 and its USB and managing the transfer of files.
I seem to recall there was a way of getting iTunes to recognise the BeoSound 2 as a drive and so iTunes could copy the files.
In the BeoSound 2 manual there was a complicate sequence of buttons to press using three fingers, or two fingers and a thumb, to get the BeoSound 2 to switch to iTunes mode. This may be the path you need to go down if you do not have the original BeoSound CD and its drivers. From memory the iTunes mode makes the BeoSound 2 look like an external device ... and I even wrote a simple DOS script to print off the playlists (once upon a time).
It has been many years since I worked with the BS 2 this way (like probably 2007!) so it's all a bit fuzzy ... here is the text from the manual, what I can't remember is if there was some teak that you needed for iTunes ... or whether it just recognised is as a USB.

Go to iTunes mode:
Press and hold ∧ and <<. Then press GO twice, without letting go of the first two buttons. Audible feedback informs you that BeoSound 2 has changed to iTunes mode.

but im not using itunes im using windows. maybe what you are saying is that its LOCKED IN ITUNES MODE.

To use your Beosound 2 within Windows you need to download and install this: ftp://ftp.beoplayer.com/BeoSound2_PC.exe
This firmware update includes the drivers need by windows, but the problem is, that it does not support Windows Vista and 7 by default.
Windows 64-bit (x64) versions are not supported by B&O, only 32-bit (x86).
If the firmware on your Beosound 2 is up-to-date then it's ok, but if you have to update it you definitly need a pc with Windows XP. The drivers for the Beosound 2 can be installed manually on Windows 7.
If you want, I can send you the required files as a complete directory copy.

I mean I can store songs straight to flash card anyway....

I don't know if it's worth. It's depends on wether you wan't to have the Beoplayer feeling or just want copy & paste tracks within windows explorer.
I had trouble just copying files to the flash card as Beosound 2 didn't want to read and play them. It may be different when having Beosound 2 in iTunes mode.
I use Beoplayer with a Beomedia 1, so I need it anyway for N.Radio on the PC.

You quite possibly don't need BeoPlayer, but I would still configure the BeoSound 2 in iTunes mode.
You can copy the files across as long as you obey the directory structure rules (I published these in the previous forums, look in the archive section).
Provided you have followed the rules, the BeoSound 2 will initialise everything when it "boots up' ... you should hear there beeps - a good sign.
Basically the BeoSound 2 has a very dumb operating system (as you would expect) and it can only handle one level of directories.
So you need simple structures like:
Neil_Diamond
Song1.mp3
track12.mp3
FavouriteSong.mp3
Frank-Sinatra
I did it my way.mp3
You can NOT have a tree like:
artist
album
songs

Did you get that download of the manual ?
I know it is a finicky beast to do thumb wrestles with but just use the finger combination I explained to set it into iTunes mode.
Here is another section from the manual that confirms my fading memory :-)
Mass Storage device mode When BeoSound 2 is in iTunes mode, it will actually work and act as a Mass Storage device. The Mass Storage device mode will make your BeoSound 2 act as an extra drive on your computer. This allows you to use, for example, your file explorer to organise your music. Note that you can only place music in folders when using file explorer. You cannot use the root or subfolders. Furthermore, to be able to change between folders as if they were playlists, you must create new folders yourself.

Hi, I just got a Beosound 2, and I am having some trouble with getting it working. I guess iTunes 12 on OSX Yosemite will never work, right? Or has anyone a link for modern drivers/plugin? I also have a windows 8.1 virtual machine, but that won't work as well. Furtunately I am on the correct firmware (ran the update on an old XP PC).
My problems are the following:
01 Track
02 Track Name
Is ther a trick to add a playlist or something? And does anyone got it to work with modern iTunes? Instead of "show in Finder">drag and drop?

And is it possible to run those drivers on a windows 8.1 64-bit system? I can also run a virtual windows xp 32-bit, but I rather not, because of the security issues with XP...
