Hello.

I have a beocenter 9300 1998 model (matte panels - one of the last of these models.)

The laser has failed, I think it is just the lens.

Does anybody know which mechanism is used in these units?

The laser travels in a straight line, not in an arc, (like the earlier model that move in an arc that have the white stripes at the front and chrome panels.)

Is it the same as an ouverture mechanism?

If any advice could be given, it would be most appreciated.

Many thanks.

What makes you so sure, that the laser is at fault ?
It's usually something much simpler.

Hi Martin,

I say this, as with most of the later Philips units that fail, it always seems to be the lens.

I have changed over many lenses in these mechanisms, and 90% of the time, it solves the problem.  I understand with the older models, with the laser that moves in an arc, it is likely to be capacitors, but this is a later mechanism, such as the one found in later upright models.

Has anyone got any ideas at all if the mechanism is shared with another unit?

Thanks again.  Much appreciated.

Could be any of:

Philips CDM12 / CD-Pro / CD-Pro2 / CD-ProM / CD-Pro2LF

Yo have to check the label which could say CDM12ind. or VAM1250 or VAM1251 or VAM1255 or something else similar. Then buy the laser for that mechanism.

A long list...

I also have a 1998 9300 and the CD player failed to play after about 6 years. I just took it out of a 10-year storage, I believe the unit needs a new laser head.  Local B&O service no longer services this unit.

How do you get the CD mechanism out so that I can send it out for repair?

Replacements are pretty esily aviable from ebay, but have to be carefully that it is exatly same type, they usually have printed id-number on connector.

 blah-blah and photographs as needed

Do I need the whole CD mechanism or just the laser head?  What is the approximate price for each?

it is something like this, depending on your mechs type:

That's right, These laser heads work.

But there are 2 different ones. Standard and Pro. Try a CDM12.3 head for a Standard drive and a 12.6 for the Pro Version.

It is not easy to find out, what drive was used.

If you open it, remove the board: the Pro Version has a magnetic Metall shield on the backside of the laser, the Standard drive does not.

Under 10 Euros for a laser head!  That is cheap!   B&O service would charge at least  US$150 for a new laser head (labor not included) if service for this model were still available..  Does B&O "overcharge" customers for parts?

I have a 2004 BeoSound 1 which needs a new laser head.  B&O charges about US$250 for part and labor ($70 for labor and. $180 for part) and it is not worth to spend so much on an old unit.  If laser head is that cheap, I would take some risk to change the head myself, with the help of online service manual.  Do you have the part no. and price? Is is easy or difficult to change laser heads for BeoSound 1?

Thanks!

There is also a reason, why the laser dies. I just say "Caps".

Replace the laser and the electrolyth capacitors on the board. this is no Magic, just simple work.

The rest is simple fine mechanics, cleaning and assembly.
