I love my beocenter 7000.  Is the amp in the beocenter 5000 the same?

Yes, I believe the amp in all the 7xxx series, which includes the 5000, was the same.

Cleve is correct - and the amplifier in the 7000 is superb - one of B&O's best. The 7000 series was the best music centre made in my opinion.

Peter,

I had been very good and taken the tablets for nearly three years but a small lapse after two irresistible offers came my way within two weeks of each other - a Beocenter 5000 and a 7007. They have 'complementary' faults so for a total cost of £20 I now have a fully working hybrid 7xxx series Beocenter!

Gents- Thank you so kindly for the responses. The 5 and 7xxx series have slightly different specs listed here (THD?) so I wondered if they have different amps. I use mine to drive first gen Maggies, and the combination is one of the most satisfying experiences in my humble existence.

And, yes, I own several (okay, 4) BeoCenters. Cleve, some might argue you should pass me your medication. (okay, 5, but it is a partial) If invited and I lived on the same continent, I would gladly come visit Dr Frankenstein's lab to hear the hybrid. I'd be thrilled, in fact.

Mr. Pharmacist (chemist?), fill the bottle, please.

If I remember rightly, Magneplanars are, like other dipole loudspeakers , quite difficult to drive as they present a complex load to the amplifier. Another demonstration of the quality of the amp in the 7xxx series.

As for 'falling off the wagon', I am in therapy - again. Mostly this consists of a period of domestic tension whilst the lady of the house makes it very clear she is not amused with yet another piece of 'that old Danish Rosewood stuff' cluttering up her house.

Hi, Clive,

I stumbled on your post because I am considering a similar approach to problems I'm facing with my Beomaster 6500.  One of its channels has very low output, and I've been living with it because no one in my area services B&O and I'm reluctant to ship it to any random service center that says they can do the job.  Independently of this, I stumbled on a pair of Magnepan Tympani 1-Ds at a great price and, before I knew what hit me, I had bought them.

The Maggies sound pretty good with the 6500 if I adjust the balance to compensate for the faulty channel, but I don't want to do that long term.  The Magnepan community suggests that I need more power than the 6500 can provide (200+ wpc) to make the Tympanis "sing."  Although I do NOT want to replace the 6500 (I am the proud original owner of a 4-piece, all-white Beosystem), I am considering the idea of connecting a second amp (possibly NAD or Rotel) through the Powerlink output, and connecting the Maggies to the speaker outputs of the second amp.

If I tried this, would I actually bypass the faulty output on the Beomaster?

Jane

Beocenter 5000 and 7000 amplifier modules are identical.

Thanks, Martin.  So, as I understand it, this would bypass the B&O's outputs in favor of the second amp's.  Would the power output be additive?  In other words, would connecting an amp rated at 200 wpc @ 8 ohms give me 310 wpc (supplementing the Beomaster's 110 wpc)?

No, Power Link is line-level and doesn't carry amplified signals. Think of the Beomaster as a preamplifier, with your external amplifier driving the loudspeakers.

Thanks!  This is really helpful.  I have not been using the Power Link, and didn't know what to expect.
