Last year I spread the Beovirus to a friend.  Huge on music but a very old poor sounding system.

Her first choice was a beocenter 2 and very quickly lab 12s. This was a music only set up.

I borrowed a set of 12.2s for the week end from my very helpful dealer. They came on a set of stands from the shop display. We spent a day trying them in various positions on and off stands with surprising differences.

The 12s were clearly better on the wall. They sounded better (a Lot) with the acoustic lens on top.

Monday came,  the demo's returned and a pair bought.

Now I had the wall brackets it was easier to get a more exacting result.

Again lens on top was better but more surprisingly, speakers closer to gether.

Then I tried a bl2 in all its settings. With the bl2 turned down to wall and set up 3 it was not obvious in the music but did " disperse " the music better around the room. I am sure there is an audiophile name for it.

This week end I did the same with BL12.3s for a music/bv set up.

Again lens up was better but the bl2 (set as above) was not necessary for music. In fact I was amazed how much base the 12.3s can put out.( way more than I need) I have not tried the bl2 with the bv but as this is in an apartment I am not to inclined to push it with the neighbours .(yet Devil)

The lens height with the 12.3s is 140cm and in olde money 55inches.

Thank you Valve1 for sharing your experience.

BeoLab 12.3 have enough bass and really don't need a subwoofer for *meloman*. I am agree for positioning them on the wall and ABL on the top.

If someone on the forum is searching BL 12.2 in silver under warranty for a nice price. Please contact me. Yes - thumbs up

I have always been a bit confused about these speakers.

Normally you would say, that the tweeter (the Acoustic Lens) should be at earheight.

This means that, if they are placed on the stand, they would have the right hight - that is, if you listen to them from a chair/couch.

However - as described above - they do sound better placed on a wall.

Only problem is that they look rather misplaced, if they are placed a that hight on a wall.

I guess most people would be temptet to place them higher - and often even with the Lens downwards.

This way the Lens on the other hand probably would be too low - or too high.....

So - what do you think - how much does the hight (of the Acoustic Lens) mean for the sound?

N.B. If you place them in an area, where you mostly stand or walk around listening to music, the hight probably would have to be different.

Hi guys, I have a pair of Beolab 12-3 placed on the wall. The lenses are positioned at the bottom as I have always heard that they are supposed to be at the height of the ears. I am really satisfied wi their performances but actually I have not tried them in the other way...

So sorry for that Embarrassed

You could place one BL12 for every meter all the way up (or down).

Would be interesting to hear, if there are differences, whether they have the ALT up or dow Whistle

I remember, that there was a similar discussion as the BL18 came out.

As I recall it, it was said that the sound of the 18's (with the higher sitting ALT's) was tunes especially for this ALT position.

The 18's (normally) are placed as they are (on the stand), so that should OK.

They are not supposed to be turned around or set up in different highs as the BL12's.

Of cource it would be nice with a comment from Geoff.

But - in the first place - I was looking for some user experiences. If anyone has noticed a difference (and which)?

Mm, all good points

The bl12.2 music only set up was listened to by a few musicians (friends calling by) and they separately loved the sound but thought something amiss.

I then moved the speakers closer and lower and no question it sounded better.

Ok so you have the sound right but speakers in the middle of the wall. As they look fantastic (imo and friends) you just make a feature of them.

Perhaps its no accident they work well close to gather, were they no launched with the flat scene bvs in mind ?

hight; well that was decided by our ears in both cases.

Yours look great where they are. If you are happy with the sound leave them as they are. Yes - thumbs up

my experience with testing.
on the flor stand and  the tweeter on top.

If the ear is on the height of the tweeter sound image is good.
If the ear is above the height of tweeter sound image is worse.
If the ear below the tweeter 20-30 degrees is the best sound image.

so ..from this experience, I can conclude that I have to give the speaker on the wall with the tweeter of 150-160cm height.

but then tweeter is full of dust after some time and cleaning is a delicate task.

but this is my experience, and not definitive for all listeners.

I finally montage and tested the speakers in the final location.

I can say that I'm pretty disappointed.
Maybe if positive thing it is good design.

The quality of workmanship is poor depending on the reputation of the mark.
They occur resonant vibrations of plastic housing.
Midtones are weak in the range of 80Hz to 150Hz...w..t..f..
Bas is underdeveloped and somewhere back there.
Do you need woofer ...yes ..!!

In short, if you compare my 200€  and 20 years old BL 6000 or even BL4000  VS ..new BL12.3 i'm quite disappointed.
Are they worth € 3,700 purchase price. ???

I did run the tone test from 20HZ till 20kHz

Vibration of plastic housing occur at 40,50,60,70 Hz

Here, I abstain from further comment until the speakers are not in tune.
And yes ..i did try different setings ..wall, free, corner...

In the period of 6 months i will repeat the test.

+ Design
+ Treble

- Poor manufacturing quality of PVC casing

- Vibration and buzzing housing
- Poor sound spectrum between 70 and 150Hz
- A high price in relation to all of the above

Marexy, I have never experienced all of these problems with my bl12-3 nor with my 12-2.

What I know is that these speakers need to be carefully installed... is it possible that they were not installed correctly?

The speakers appear to be mounted to a hollow wall and spaced withe wooden blocks which in combination will surely affect sound?

They should not vibrate on there own. Before i've fixed my 12-2's on the wall i've heard many unpleasing sounds as they are designed to have a specific aperture for the bass in conjunction with the wall. Also they had room to vibrate as they where not fixed to anything.

Check your wall, loose cables, cable-caps that came loose. Also check if the dry-wall-plug's are not protruding from the wall. My brackets seem to vibrate as they are not 100% flush with the wall. Good luck!

As I mentioned in my plan is changing cables for thicker and cleaner copper and double coated.
Lenses unfortunately unable to be at the top because they be at a height of 190cm.
So I turned it down.
Speakers do not play open and my audiophile concepts too cold.

Bass is present but not such as should be.
Missing front speaker that would play tones between 80 and 450 Hz

During the 2 weeks will I carried out interventions on speakers and then can give a final assessment.

Please Perform the test frequency from 20Hz to 20kHz.
There are special MP3 CDs with 50 positions and test frequencies.
Then tell me what you concluded.

I have just played this test track on my system.

https://youtu.be/qNf9nzvnd1k

No vibrations at all of neither my 12-3 nor my 12-2 cases.

It MUST be an installation problem. They are not easy speakers to install. You just need a cable which is not really in the right position and it rattles terribly... double check everything, isolate the problems and you'll be fine.

The speakers are wonderful. You just need to have them installed correctly.
