Is it possible to connect Beovox Penta´s to the S8, instead of the speakers that comes with it?

I would not do that - the amp is tuned to work with the satelites.

Hi guys,

I am considering to purchase the Beoplay S8 or BL14 for use with non-go amp. Planning to start out with 2.1, but would like 5.1 feature at a later point in time.

I prefer the color (and price) of S8, but I am reluctant to buy it, because of supposed missing features compared to BL14. I am hoping that some you might be able to answer the below questions :)

S8 inputs/outputs look totally similar to BL14.

1: I read in the "flash-thread" that a user had successfully confirmed that all channels was working on S8. My concerns are if B&O might have implemented a mechanism do disable the use of 5 speakers? E.g. when detecting multiple inputs front/rear etc. simultaneous, will it then disable some of the channels?.

2: Is the D-SUB (used for non-bo non-preout amps) input working on S8? B&O does not mention it in the manual - it is only described in the BL14 manual.

Almost too good to be true if S8 actually can be used surround sound :)

MM's answer is correct. The DSP in the BeoLab 14 and the BeoPlay S8 filters not only for the bass management between satellite and subwoofer, but also for the compensation of the satellites' acoustic behaviour. In other words, they're heavily EQ'ed for those specific drivers in those specific enclosures.

If you plug in a Penta to the amp output, sound will come out of the Penta and nothing will explode - but it certainly will not sound good. It would be similar to disconnecting the midrange from a BeoLab 20 and plugging it into a Penta.

See http://www.tonmeister.ca/wordpress/2013/12/19/bo-tech-what-is-sound-design/ for a more generalised explanation of this.

Cheers

For those who is wondering.

I can confirm that there is at least 5 active amps in the beoplay S8.

I got two set of beoplay S8 therefore just for fun, I hooked up 4 speakers to one of the subwoofers.

Two speakers as front, and two speakers as rear, connected as a 4.1 system. I can confirm that the system does not block any channel. All 4 speakers works.

Looking forward to using a S8 with 4 speakers (as 'hight speakers') together with an existing 5.0 setup

for a future Dolby Atmos/Auro 3D setup (or a TrueImage equivalent version of that) Smile

Hy all! i am new here, and i'm looking for some answers from you guys!

I would like to buy the S8, and use it at a normal 2.1 System, connecting it to my airport express and to my video projector.

Is it possible to have more then one AUX Input to the S8?

Hi and welcome,

you'd need at least some kind of (external) switch.

Don't you already have a receiver for the sources going to your projector?

Thanks for the reply MM!

No, i don't. The audio from the projector goes to my Beosound 8 over RCA. And so does my airport express.

This is why i am planning to upgrade to a S8 or BL14, but i need to make sure that i don't have manually change the input if all audio sources are RCA (Macbook, Projectorm, Airport Express)

I wonder if the Powerlink inputs can be used for stereo with the proper adapter..

If you don't want to switch manually and don't want to use an external receiver or a control preampflifier, perhaps one of the almando adaptors would work for you:

Get a Playmaker instead of the APE - that has the line-in, you'd need for the projector.

The PM has the right outputs for the S8, and you can control that with a Beo4 alternatively it has volumen control on the device and autoswitching of the sources.

P.S. Just seen that you mention even more sources (MacBook) - maybe it is time to think about some kind of pre-amp. An older BeoMaster (6000/7000/4500) would do the trick. Just use the ports, that normally would be used for CD, A.Tape, Phono, A.Aux.... Easily managed by a Beo4.

Hi, just wanted to bring this thread back to life to see if anyone actaully does use the S8 as 'rears'? I have a V1 and Lab 18's and am thinking of where to go next. Dont want to change the TV yet as looking to move home next year so will wait, for obvious reasons. But was looking at either the Lab19 sub or after reading this the S8 to potentially get me to 5.1.

My dealer had not tried this, so before I think about trying this - does anyone have any hands on experience at making this work?

Does that mean I could for sure potentially setup a 5.1 system using the A8, if I were somehow able to get three more speakers?

I spoke with my dealer. And they confirm that the S8 does not have a full set of amplifiers. It only has 3 (one for the sub and two for the satelites).

They had tried to connect 5 speakers to it, and it does not work.

...ummm, almost three months after the product launch - there is still no single review to be found?

Is nobody buying it or nobody thinks Beoplay S8 review would be interesting to the general audience? I find it odd, honestly. Huh?

And BEOCET in the Flash your B&O thread said the same.

BEOCET:

All amps are active, tested it yesterday. The inputs are not blocked. Sounds fantastic.

My guess would be that they where early produced units.

Might be that some comes with full sets of amps, but one should be careful about purchasing it thinking it has full set.

Of course you are lucky if you get a unit with full set, but remember that you are paying for 2.1. You can return or complain if it doesn't support 5.1.

Could you use the S8 with the wireless transmitter 1 effectively acting as a Subwoofer at the back of the room with the 2 speakers as rear speakers (without having a lead all the way to the TV)

Has anybody purchased the Beoplay S8 lately, and are able to test if they have it with 2, 4, or 5 amplifiers?

Going to purchase them for surround use, and concidering to buy two Beoplay S8 instead of a Beoplay 14 4.1

2 subs are better than 1 :P

I ended up taking home the demo-unit from the store. From my testing, it had at least 2 front and 2 rear amps. Wasn´t able to test if the 5th amp was there.

I did not buy it, as my BV7-40 is a mk2, and it is not possible to adjust bass when using a digital source. I had to go to Tv in order to adjust the bass. It is only possible to adjust the picture settings when in a digital source.

Also, I did not like the sound of the S8.

I'm a huge fan of the S8

It's a great bargain in my opinion.

I think the sound is rather good.

I have one in my master bedroom with a bv11-46. It sounds perfect for my taste.

It's very full and to me has alter appropriate

Sound reproduction for its class.

I recommend them regularly. In fact, I bought my parents a set for Christmas.

Probably the best bargain in the range I think.

So I created this thread with a mixed view on this speaker, more the fact it was a copy of the main Bang & Olufsen Beolab 14.

a month ago I bought one on a promotion, and haven't looked back, it's connected to a Sony LCD TV and the difference is incredible.  The woofer provides the right mount of punch and the 2 speakers have a very good level of clarity.

for the price it's a great system!

How is it connected to the tv?

Directly or via amplifier?

Hi, so I recently demoed both s8 and beolab 14 4.1 and found the that the 4.1 setup would be ideal for my requirements. The price difference between them however is huge. I could buy two s8s and an amplifier and it would still be cheaper than buying beolab14.

Firstly, would this setup be possible? That is 4.2 setup using front otput of the amplifier for one of the s8 and surround output for the other s8. I am not sire if this is possible though. Could anyone suggest the ports of the s8 and amplifier that would be used if thus is possible.

secondly, would there be a difference in surround sound quality? Whether the same immersive experience woukd be created?

Suggestions would be much appreciated!

Has anyone tested the D-SUB DB15 (VGA like)  input? If it is indeed just a rebranded and recolored version of the BL14, it should work from with an output from regular red-and-black speaker channels from an AVR.

Related to that, but not in the best of the topic: anyone has the schematics of the D-SUB cable?

Thanks!

I would just like to inform you S8 owners out there without a B&O TV. They have now launched a connection hub to the beoplay s8 system with a total of three connections where one is optical for your TV. I have been waiting a long time for this product and have contacted them about it in several emails. It is priced at EUR 149 / USD 199 / DKK 999 which is a fair price for a DAC, but in my opinion should be included in the price.  http://www.beoplay.com/landingpages/accessories/s8
