Hi, just wanted to say hello as I'm new to the forum and also to the world of vinyl really - just acquired my first 'proper' record player - a Beogram 1203 and I love it, but have not managed to get it working correctly yet.
A new belt has been ordered as it was obvious the old one was useless!
I was told the transport screws needed to be loosened - are these the big 3 silver ones under the platter? How much do I need to loosen them by?
Also, the speed adjuster wheel moves to the right (physically), moving the mechanism inside - should this happen?
And lastly, the arm doesn't move up at all - is there something likely holding this in place or is it more serious? It moves onto the record as it should, or at least tries to, but can't get onto it as it won't lift.

The three transport screws are the ones you have found under the platter, they should be fully loosened.
i don't think the speed adjustment wheel should physically move around. The issue with the arm is more than likely a lubrication problem inside the the mech. I'm sure someone with more knowledge will be able to help you further!

Welcome to the forum, I have a BG 1202, the arm lift mech. is probably a cleaning and lubrication problem, as far as I remember the speed adjustment wheel does not move in and out, But open the deck, check for broken and/or missing pieces, clean and lubricate everything. This may help a little

Yes, ensure the transit screws (under the platter - not underneath the base on this model) are full undone - they won't come out, just keep turning them until they are fully loose.
Where did you buy the new belt from? Many are rubbish - the wrong size etc.
The adjuster wheel should not move so check this out when you have it open.
The arm barely moves 'up' anyway. It moves across and then down depending on how it's set-up, so worry about that later.
The mechanism may be out of alignment/order. Turn the platter slowly by hand and let the system run through the arm lift, move to record and drop sequence. Take the tonearm to the end of a record and allow it to lift and return to stop position. That usually resets the mechanism to normal.
Follow the other steps about cleaning and lubrication (liquid bearings is great stuff) but do not use WD40 under any circumstance and keep any lubricant away from the belt.

Thanks for the cleaning tips, I'll get stuck into that. I got the belt from here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/300590215430?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT - did look elsewhere but failed to find anything, at least in the UK.
I've seen that belt sold on eBay but don't know the fit or quality. If he has them, our member 'Dillen' will have the correct belt (best profile, quality and size). This is important to not put excess pressure on motor or bearings. I'm not sure he has that belt though.

I got my belt (1202) from Axel, no problems,
If Axel has a good one, I suggest buying from him (if you need a belt at all).I don't have this belt.

Ok, so took it apart and needed a good greasing! All working well now, just waiting for my new belt to arrive (hopefully it'll be a decent one!) and will get myself a set of speakers then I'm good to go :-) Thanks all for the suggestions.

Excellent advice, and I have found it works well with RX2s and 3404s. It's amazing these tables can "reset" themselves as they do. Sometimes plugging the unit in while the tonearm was near the spindle has helped with the reset.
