They can also be re-chromed to look like brand new again.

There are services you can purchase that will place your bid at the last moment. I have lost to some of those but I have also won over them before. The bottom line is you can place your maximum bid at any time so it always comes down to someone willing to pay more than you. When I get beat on an item it is because the winner went over my limit. The people that use those last minute bid tools hope that the early bidders didn't place a true, maximum bid yet and they don't want to tip their hand (or bid the item up) by bidding early. Kind of chicken. I sometimes wait until very late in the auction to place my bids though. I do that because I want to leave my options open if I find the item for sale elsewhere.
