Greetings :)

I have recently aquired a Beosound 9000 mark III

I am trying to connect it to my Yamaha surround receiver thru the digital SPDIF output on the Beosound 9000 (to play CDs only, not radio, I know it does not work with SPDIF)

Unfortunately, this does not work - I get no sound.

I would appreciate an advice :)

Connecting other equipment with the same SPDIF cable to Yamaha works like a charm, but Beosound is silent.

(BTW -I do not yet own the beo4 remote)

Hello and welcome

I can't recall if the SPDIF outputs a fixed level or if it's volume regulated? Have you tried adjusting the volume on the BeoSound 9000 on its on keypad control as well as on your Yamaha?

The problem is that I can not change the volume, balance, treble or bass on the beosound 9000, it responds with "TV OPERATED" message.

It's displays TV Operation because there aren't any active speakers connected to the PL sockets. The 9000 automatically sets itself into IR option 0. Speak to Steve at Sounds Heavenly and he will supply a PL plug that short circuits the PL board so it thinks it has active speakers attached. You will then have volume and tonal control again.

I do not think it is possible to control volume on the digital output, as it delivers the signal unbalanced and "raw" to the external decoder. The is no need for that, really, as everything can be controlled with the external decoder.

I suppose that in option 0 mode, the beosound outputs signal thru digital output by default  (since no speakers are attached to the beosound)? But this is not happening in my case :(

I don't think the digital output of BS 9000 depends on the option setting.

I assume the digital input of your Yamaha can't handle the sound format (sample rate). Or the output of BS 9000 is faulty.

Yamaha is working with other digital sources thru the same input without problems, and this is a competent modern decoder capable of handling several audio formats and sample rates, so it looks like there is something wrong with the 9000. This is probably a well known quirk, as I have seen other people posting about the same problem.

The digital out comes directly from the CD decoderboard. No volumecontrol or mute-switching.

Only a small isolator coil/transformer is placed between the decoder and phono jacket.

Hi everyone,

I am trying to get this exact same setup. I have a DIGITAL connection between the BS9000 and a Yamaha preamp.

I get no sound... not only that, the Beo4 doesnt work (i understand that it goes into "MODE 0") This then means I cant even turn the BS9000 on or off. I have to use the plastic red button on the side, which cuts the power off completely, even leaving the CD spinning freely until it naturally stops (a very bizarre method of turning off considering they cut you off from the remote. It also seems to cut off a lot of function from the touchpad behind the door [even more bizarre])

Am I able to run a PL-RCA cable converter from the PL OUT sockets to the Analogue IN on the Yamaha? I know this would double up the variable volume control, but at least that darn thing will work maybe?

Hopefully this is a simple fix. The digital-out, i thought for a second there, was actually something clever and useful.

Hi,

just ask Steve for a dummy Plug and the converter cable at  https://www.soundsheavenly.com/

Or click on one of the three pics with the guy in his blue shirt at the end of this side.

To switch the Beosound properly off there's also a button left to the CD6 button, like the one on the right to move the glas lid Wink

Using this button, the BS 9000 powers down propoerly including correct postioning of the CD and move the clamper to the left / up.

As people have said, you need a dummy plug plugged into one of the Powerlink outputs to fool the unit into thinking it has speakers connected. You can make this yourself if you want - it just needs a DIN plug with a 4.7kOhm resistor connected between Pin 4 (Speaker on) and Pin 2 (GND)

Then the digital output will work and full remote control will be available (although not volume, obviously).

I ran mine like this for a few years into a Yamaha preamplifier's digital input and it worked perfectly.

Do I need one or two of these dummy plugs by the way?

You only need one - and it doesn't matter which Powerlink socket you plug it into!

Hey!

Yes, i got a digital out, and it only works with the dummy plug.

Volume has to be controlled from whatever other device you are using.

Not the best setup, but audio sounds and works flawlessly. The only gripe is the need for 2 different remotes; in my case, the Beo4, and a Yamaha remote.

Chris

Hi. Can you confirm the value of the resistor? I’d like to make my own adapter.

what are the voltages otherwise? 12V

I am planning to connect Beosound 9000 to Linn DSM via SPDIF.
Therefore the intended output is from dig out of Beosound 9000 to Linn integrated amplifier. How can I stop playing CD through powerlink to Beolab 8000 and send the digital signal via SPDIF? Any button to press on remote control?

Thanks in advance!
