Dear BeoWorld,
Looking for some advice please on not getting proper Dolby 5.1 sounds on my BV7-32 Mk III. I have an Apple TV3 connected to my BV7-32 Mk III via an HDMI to DVI-I cable for video and via TOSlink to a NEET DAC 2000 then onwards by two RCA cables to the BV7-32.
I get good sound quality, but not full 5.1 surround sound when on Speaker Option 5, I run a 5.1 check on YouTube and the front speakers and central speaker all work, but the rear speakers sounds comes out of the front in a rather muted manner and the LFE doesn't function at all. However, when I check the speakers on the BV setup they all work well and when Speaker Option 4 is selected all work fine.
Is the problem the NEET DAC not passing through the 5.1 signals or is it my BV7-32 not handling it properly?
Any/all thought advice would be appreciated, thanks!
Best, Rob
The two RCA's gives you a stereo signal - you can't get any real 5.1 sound that way.
Probably the tv (the surround module) upmixes the stereo signal. Have a look in the Sound Settings, what the in- and output is.
Ever thought of using the digital out of the ATV instead (you'll need a converter toslink to coax for that).
By the way - Speaker4 is 'double stereo' - which has nothing to do with 'surround sound'.

There is a tv - and there is a BV

Hi MM,
Thanks. I may not have been clear in my description I am using the optical digital output of the ATV (TOSlink to coax converter) already (that's the NEET DAC).

Hi w5bno123,
Thanks, I think you might be onto something here. Do you know how I determine the revision levels of the AP and DSM software? Also does anyone know a reliable B&O engineer in the South UK (my dealer retired a few years ago, sadly)?
Sorry - a DAC (also the NEED DAC) converts a digital (coax or optical) to analog RCA.
Do you have the digital connected in addition to that?
And you should concider the suggestions from w5bno123 as well, if that is the case.
For video I connect the ATV3 to BV with HDMI to DVI-I cable. For audio I only have one route which is Optical from ATV3 to DAC then coax from DAC to BV going in via RCA/Coax feeds associated with the DVI-I channel.
Is there an alternative channel, not sure I can see one?
Thanks, Rob

What kind of video are you trying to play, i.e are you playing a 5.1 compatible video bought in iTunes, or are you mirroring your desktop and playing a .mkv through VLC?
"You think we can slap some oak on this thing?"
Hi Leosgonewild,
I'm playing movies streamed from iTunes running on a Mac-mini. These movies have been converted via Handbrake from my original DVDs and have got both the normal stereo and passthru 5.1 audio tracks included. I have also tried playing the Dolby 5.1 test video from YouTube with the same results.
The ATV has got Audio Setting/Dolby=On
So, I don't think it's the source material, but more in how the audio is being presented or converted between ATV3 and BeoVision
I believe it's both a DAC and an optical to Coax converter, this is the device: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Neet®-DAC-Digital-Analogue-Converter/dp/B0038M3ID8/ref=sr_1_sc_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1410346573&sr=8-2-spell&keywords=Neetcable+DAC
I think the DAC may be the problem as it's only stereo, but I read somewhere that Dolby 5.1 is in fact just two channels that are subsequently decoded in the BeoVision? In which case w5bno123 may be right and the audio processor software might need checking. What do you think?

Many thanks, I think you've got it! I have ordered a co-ax to optical converter. Should arrive tomorrow so will find out soon
Ahhh this is turning into a bit of a saga, your further help would be appreciated...
Update - Thanks to helpful suggestions I've now installed a new digital TOSlink to digital Coax converter and used this to carry sound from my ATV3 to the digital AV1 socket of my BV7-32 mk3 in an effort to get true 5.1 sound. I have set ATV3 to audio Dolby On as detailed in other parts of this forum. Progress, but...
i can no longer hear music from ATV at all & my pre ripped (Handbrake) movies do have sound but it's rather muted and on speaker option 5 only, but is clearly not proper 5.1. Also as soon as you stop playing film the audio stops and you can't hear YouTube videos or the audio 'beeps' an ATV makes each time you press the remote.
Do you think it's my BV7-32 needs an upgrade on the audio chip or software? If so where do I find what my current rev level is? I guess it's time to talk to a dealer, but mine has retired, so I'll have to try someone else who's unknown.
many thanks, Rob
Dear Rauber & Berlin2010,
It seems you're right, thank-you.
Renting a film from iTunes works in 5.1, so I think I need to follow up with a dealer to get my audio s/w upgraded. I've just checked on the settings panel on BV7-32 mk3 and it says:
AP SW 7.5
MSP 02070F48
HIP 09
PICTP 00
HOP 0C
AC3 SW 2.50a
Thoughts?
