A while ago the new Avant arrived.  First New B&O for some while (but the 6th overall).

I thought I was being stupid, as the EPG seemed 'empty'. Then a week or two ago, there was a software refresh, and the 'update EPG' option disappeared.

I rescanned the the channels (on Astra, UK)  - so slow!

But still nothing, so I referred to the dealer, who contacted B&O who said (and I paraphrase) "It doesn't work, an we have no intention of making it work".

Deeply frustrated - so I have a letter for B&O requiring a refund, or a working EPG as per manual.  I can buy a £200 nonane TV with an EPG, but £7k of B&O doesn't? Just very sad.

Hmmm. Agree with you. Hopefully this is just a miscommunication.

Dealer was very specific about the comments from B&O 'It will never be available' was what I was told.  The dealer was almost as surprised as I was. Hence the email winging it's way to B&O tomorrow.

It's a pity - I have just got used to the new remote.

Sorry, but I can't believe this! Can anybody confirm that the new Avant has no EPG? It's like a car without a heater!

Is this the guide where you can see all coming programs on the channel? If so: Yes, my Avant 55 has EPG.

Daniel - I'm intrigued.  You're in Sweden, maybe it's a different satellite?  I'm Astra (UK).

This is all that shows on the EPG, both here at home, and at the dealer.  Current program, then the next program, and nothing more.  Also, most channels have nothing, until you actually start watching the channel (via P+/-, as you can't select a channel from the EPG if there is no content showing).

It worked better when they had the blue 'refresh EPG' option, but now thats gone, it's useless.

Ok, some further investigation has yielded disturbing news.

Standard Astra 28E does indeed only publish 'Now & Next'. No 7/10/14 day EPG is available.

My Elgato SAT/TV feed does this elegantly, by hooking into an online EPG, and presenting that.  Freesat and Sky provide their own.

SO, to get an EPG, I have to go and buy a Freesat box. Of course there is no room to mount this behind the TV, and the carefully planned sat coax feeds go straight into the wall mount, so I will need the builders back to reroute the aerial feeds, and run an HDMI - and then their is the audio signal too. If only there was Freesat CA module.

Disappointed doesn't really describe it.

I think my sattellite is Thor, and it has EPG for every channel until Ragnarök (doomsday for Thor and the other viking goods).

STB Brackets has mounting options for hanging stuff behind the Avant, but it's ain't free and of course I would be disappointed if I would have to pay extra for something like this.

Edit, just saw your Avant is wall mounted. No space for extra brackets on the back. Sorry.

Hearing about this issue I have to add a comment on a general level.

This is exactly why Beosystem 4 needs to be a separate box. Then you once and for all pull one hdmi from beosystem 4 to the TV. After that all your devices can easily be attached and detached as needed to the beosystem hidden away somewhere..

If you don't want a separate beosystem 4 then attach that to the back of the TV.

No space behind an avant for any box, it is flat against the wall when it is turned off..

Official Answer

***** Summary *****
KE BeoVision 11, BeoPlay V1: Wish for Freeview (UK) certification

***** Question *****
Wish to get it FreeView certified.
Since the TV is not FreeView certified, it will only display Now & Next in the guide. Full EPG is only available to certified products. You can record two channels and Live Pause does work. It does require that two cables are connected though.
Channels may not be sorted correctly as service provider suggests
The DVB HD module does not automatically update Networks changes (e.g. new channel numbers)

***** Answer *****
From a business point of view it has been decided not to be certified for Freeview. Input will be considered for future updates and next generation products.

To make it worse, there is no storage or anywhere to hide a Freesat box, It's a modern minimal beach house.  The nearest cupboard is up and over the vaulted ceiling. About 30 metres away.

Bring back my old, old Panny plasma with built in Freesat that went to the tip. It just worked.

is this not the next generation of product ?

we tend to forget there is more to design than designing.

I can confirm we fitted an Avant in the UK today - i'm in front of it now - full EPG available, working brilliantly, and we have a USB powered 500gb solid state hard drive that easily fits inside the back cover - you could get a dozen in there.

Unfortunately, this is why I'm slowly falling out of love with modern B&O.  The apparent attitude of the company to it's customers is certainly putting me off buying any 'newer' stuff.  I'll just stick to my vintage and more recent (80's and 90's) B&O.  Why spend all of that hard earned money on a product that won't perform the simplest things and B&O won't help users get the most from their chosen media or get the best functionality from their expensive product which even a basic 300 € TV can do?

I might have expected this from other manufacturers of 'Premium' products but not B&O.

Dave.

Martin

That hasn't had the software refresh. When it has, the blue 'Refresh EPG' option will go.

I'd love to know if the EPG still works.

Is that on Astra? (I assume so...) - but Astra says it only broadcasts Curent & next..

Lain,

Perhaps something is wrong in your settings? Some info is there and that is strange. Anyhow, could you take some more installation pics? It looks very nice! I have a pair of BL9 also with an Avant and I am considering changing to white covers too. What do you think about the white and have you had any other colors for them also?

Well, after nearly 4 months still no progress.

No change to the EPG, and despite the best endeavours of someone at B&O to stimulate a response from customer services neither I nor the dealer have heard anything.

Time to return it as 'unfit for purpose' I think.  After so many years of B&O it feels sad - but Meridian MQA sounds nice :)

Hi all

Only the DVB-T freeview module supports fully licensed software and full EPG listings. For UK residents, the SAT module is not Freesat and should not be sold as, to my knowledge this isn't advertised anywhere that it is and works within the parameters as listed. Frustrating but that's what it is...

Indeed, but it should populate "current+1".  Without that you cannot even scroll down to a channel see what is being broadcast and select that channel, as you cannot select an 'empty' channel

Hi Iain,

Thanks for the heads on on the Meridian MQA - it sounds very much like the system that Bono from U2 is working with Apple on. Maybe there's some collaboration going on :) Very interesting hi-res 24 bit music with tiny file sizes!

I really don't think Bono has any qualifications in respect of audio compression! Bob Stuart on the other hand is staggeringly knowledgeable in both theoretical and practical senses.  If there was an Apple link, I think it would have been publicly trumpeted.  Bear in mind that MQA has been shown to journalists some 2 years ago - although the name had not been decided on.

the fact it can be delivered inside standard wrappers (ALAC for example) will be a huge plus.  My order for an Explorer 2 is already placed.

It's very exciting - I just hope that there's a demand for it - it's sad that the majority of the young generation that I talk to (18-25) won't pay for music downloads and even look at me as though i'm insane when I say that I 'pay' to download a HD movie :)

I do hope that you find enjoyment in your Avant Iain. Do you have Apple TV connected to it? I really wise that B&O would use more Panasonic parts in their products. My heart is still with Panasonic as their products simply last & last & last. I've never had less than 10 years heavy use out their products. I have a 15 year old Panasonic VCR still in my house that we used for 12 hours a day every day for 7 years as an output back up at one of my former radio stations and it works as well as day 1 (AND it was £150 when new in 1999.)

Good luck with whatever you decide on!

And now iPlayer has changed to a WWW page?

It's really hard trying to enter characters into the search field - is there a keyboard facility I haven't discovered?

The arrow (mouse arrow) responds to the direction controls - but it is incredibly awkward to navigate!
