Hi all,
after upgrading my main room to a BV 10 I thought I move the old BeoCenter 1 into our sleeping room. I have two old Braun passive speakers, I want to hook up to the BC 1. After checking the net, I thought an MCL2P would be the device of choice to go from BC1's Powerlink sockets to passive speakers. Hooked it all together and guess what? No sound on the speakers. The MCL2P is working (checked it with an Overture) and it also switches on when connected to the BC1 - only it seems the BC1 doesn't send audio its way. Does anyone have any clue how to get this working? Am I on the wrong track with the MCL2P? Do I need to configure some hidden BC1 feature to make this work? Any pointers welcome
cheers
Torsten
Have a look at the post from Overture here: http://archivedforum2.beoworld.org/forums/p/8684/76492.aspx#76492
(EDIT: And welcome to Beoworld!)
thanks (for both :-)
tried it, doesn't work. It seems the BC1 doesn't recognize the MCL2P as speakers....
That's a shame. Was it a fully wired Mk 2 powerlink cable? - that sometimes makes a difference (but would probably make a difference on the Overture too).
all wires connected. I believe the thin cables connecting speakers to power link socket do not contain wires for all pins...
Hi,
the thin wires contain only left, right and mute signals. The MCL2P needs a power on signal on pin 4 to be switched on whereas the mute signal of the thin powerlink cable is routed to pin 1 of the DIN plug.
So you have two posibilities: Use a thick powerlink cable or connect pin 1 and 4 at the DIN plug ;)

I have a thick cable!
Hi Torsten,
did you have external Speakers on the BC1 earlier?
You'll probably have to configure (in the menu) that the tv has external speakers connected.
Try (on the Beo4) pushing 'Speaker' and '2' to see what happens!
(You can find 'Speaker' in the list on the Beo4)

There is a tv - and there is a BV
Yes. When the BC1 was in the main room, two BL8000 and a Detoma subwoofer were connected to it.
It doesn't look, like the BC1 is reacting at all to Speaker 1/2/3 commands. To me it seems like the BC1 doesn't recognize the MCL2P as a speaker...
Very curious!
I've had several 2P (or later versions) in different setups over the last many years - as amp for front/rear speakers and in linkrooms. Never had issues with them (using the rght cables!).
The BC1 must react to Speaker commands!!
Which option is it in?
You wrote that the amp is switching on when the tv is turned on - must be a setup-thing in the tv.
How are the settings/connections?
I would also think it's a setup issue in the BC1.
The BC1 is in option-6, the MCL2P to the best of my knowledge can not be configured (or can it, how?). There is a fully wired (i.e. all pins connected) cable running from the right powerlink output of the BC1 to the MCL2P. It doesn't seem the BC1 is reacting to speaker commands - although it could well do. But since it doesn't seem to send audio to the MCL2P I can not verify any speaker commands.
In addition the BC1 is connected to ML and that works (link radio and n.music work well). Then there's a set top box hooked up to AV and a PUC is hooked up to the stb module to control the set top box. Works well.
Am not aware of any other setup parameters or am I missing something here?
In the link that I sent you it said to press '>>' after 'speaker' and before the relevant number ('2' in your case). Did you do this? Also perhaps you have to press 'go' after pressing the number.
yep - did that...
Hmmmm. Have you got a Beolink 1000? Perhaps 'SOUND' then '>>' then the number would work, but I am clutching at straws!
No. It's a beo4 and I have used the speaker command when the system was in the main room to switch the "center" speakers (i.e. internal BC1 speakers) on or off.
To me it really looks like the BC doesn't recognize there's something hooked up to the PL sockets. Are there different variants of MCL/Powerlink cables?
Yes, I think it's the Mk2 'fully wired' cable that you need. See here: http://www.beoworld.org/faq_view.asp?id=41
You could drop Steve at 'Sounds Heavenly' (see sponsor below) an email. He probably has more experience of MCL2P in such set-ups.
just to make it sure. Before the BC 1 had Beolab 8000 connected to the powerlink sockets and you could switch the speakers. But the BC 1 was in option 1 (or 2). Now it's in option 6. Maybe there's a problem with this. To find out i would suggest that you disconnect your BC 1 from the masterlink and program it to option 1. Now check whether you can switch the speakers if this works now and didn't before than there's a problem with the software of the BC 1 and option 6.
If this doesn't work you could also try to connect the MCL 2P and one Braun loudspeaker to your BV 7 instead of the center speaker. You should now be able to hear the TV sound at least in speaker 1 and speaker 3 setting. If you can't hear the sound there's probably a fault in the MCL 2P.
If the MCL 2P works fine at the BV 7 and not the BV6 in option 1 than there's a problem with the BC 1
This reminds me of the auto option configuration of the beoSound 9000. If no spekers are connected the option 0 will be selected. You would need a special plug at one powerlink socket to fool the BeoSound 9000. Hint: connect Pin 2 and Pin 4 with a resistor ( 1K up to 3K3). This plug made the BS 9000 believe that there are Beolabs connected and it didn't auto config to option 0
Tried that - same result. I really think the BC1 thinks there are no loudspeakers. So the 1k resistor solution sounds great. Do you think this is needed only on one socket or would I need to do this on both sockets? If I need to do this on both sockets, will that resistors impact anything the MCL2P does?
both sockets are in parallel, so one fooling DIN plug fits all
I think there's no influence in the function for the MCL 2P. Maybe you have to increase from 1K to 2K2 or even further. I guess even 10K should do the work.
tnx. will try and report back here...
Fixed it. Solution was to build a dedicated PL cable. PL switches on via pin 4. MCL2P however needs this signal on pin 1. Build this cable, works. Only remaining issue: when switching off the BC1 have a pretty loud crack in the speakers. That does not happen if I switch the MCL2P off via it little on/off switch. So this has got to come from the TV. Anyone any idea for fixing this last glitch?
