Hi all,

I'm in the market to replace my BV3-32 as main TV in my living room to something slightly bigger.
My budget is about the size of the new Beoplay TV v1 40'' but unfortunately it doesn't tick any of the boxes for me..so I am looking into the second hand market.

What I find is that a late Beovision 5 or an early Beovision 7-40 would fit my budget... or even an early BV4-50..

Which one would you recommend? Any particular problems I should be aware of when buying any of these?

I have 2x BL8000 as front, 2xBL6000 as rear, Canton ASF75 SC subwoofer, Beosystem 2300 and a beogram 3300, DVD1 and an Apple TV connected today and my intention is just to swap the BV3 with any of those two...

/P

Personally, I think the BV5 is aging a little now as a long-term replacement. I'd go for a second hand BV7-40 MKIV or higher (try to avoid a BV7-40 below the MKIV as the picture was very dark) or even a second hand BV9? You can now pick up a BV9 for a very reasonable price, you get the benefits of the plasma screen, it's a more modern BS3-powered version of the BV5, same shape, plus you get the 50" panel.

Avoid the early BV7 - they really were not very good! I have a BV5 and am very happy with it - picture is fine to me and the sound excellent. Moxxey is quite right that a BV9 would be better still, but these are out of your price range!

Thanks for your advice, guys!

When I first saw the early BV7, I was not at all impressed with the picture compared to my BV3-32, so I wasn't at all interested in buying one at the time.. At least here in Sweden the Mk IV versions of BV7 are very expensive still..usually around 4000 Euros, which is beyond my budget.

A BV9 would be a dream, but they are also in that league or higher...unfortunately..

So, I guess in the price range 2500-3000 Euros I could get a decent BV5 or a BV7-40 Mk II or III right? or a BV4-50 non HD ( without center speaker that is..) I have the feeling that the BV7-40 mk II or III has less picture quality, especially if I watch also analog channels...am I right?

Hey Peter,

I've done the very same thing going from a BV3-32, and always wanted a BV5, but it is outdated as moxxey succinctly points out. Maybe if you save your pennies you can buy a second hand BV9, as i did.

I have heard that the V1 is indeed very good, and designed to work with mediums such as Apple TV, definitely worth considering, check it out at a dealer for yourself!

The BV5 is essentially an Avant with a 42" plasma screen. You will not have the connectivity some crave, but is a very good picture and is bomb proof! The sound is also better than many of the newer sets.

I thought about a BV9, but it would be far too big  for me - I am not a great TV watcher and I find that the BV5 is a bit dominating already! I rather like the look of the V1 and am looking for a replacemnt for my LX6000 but the lack of an ability to control a remote sky box (attached to another set) rules it out.

Thanks Dave and Peter,

I guess I can already at this point rule out the BV7 because of the lack of  picture quality of the Mk I and II ( and the newer ones being too expensive yet)
The BV 9 is the ultimate TV for me I think, as I watch lots of concerts and want a big screen and great sound..so either I save up for that or look for a BV 5 or BV 4

Is the plasma in the BV4 essentially the same as the BV5 ? ( the 42 '' model)

I think if I can save up to 4500-5000 Euros I would go for a BV9 rather than a BV7-40 Mk IV, I guess thats more value for money, right?

Otherwise I would spend 2000 Euros on a BV 5 (one of the last HD version) even it at some points is outdated when it comes to connectivity.

I would really like to buy a new V1 40'' but I dont like the design, and I can't connect it to my beocenter and beogram, so its not an option for me..too bad..since I finally could afford a brand new B&O set again ( but the v1 don't do it for me.)

/Peter

Why not considering a BV8-40. It is still a modern TV. Picture quality is very good and in my opinion better than early BV7. It has 2-3 HDMI and all relevant other inputs and can control your other setup.

And they are quite reasonable in pricing now.

You would never regret getting a BV9 - its sounds like it would suit what you want - I would suggest if you are big on films etc, you do need the surround speakers to go with it though. Remember it is mono by itself.

Herbert's suggestion is a good one, if you can't stomach the V1. Nothing older than a mk3 7 either.

Beosound Stage, Beovision 8-40, Beolit 20, Beosound Explore.
