I am experiencing tracking problems with my Beogram 4002.

When playing a 45 RPM LP it “appears” the tonearm moves too quickly and literally drags the stylus over the grooves. The 4002 plays well for 45 seconds (or thereabouts) and then skips a groove or two. This repeats consistently.

I removed the MMC20CL cartridge and found a small amount of debris, removed the fuzz, but this made no difference in performance.

I then tried this 45 RPM record on both my Beogram 4000 and 8002, and both Beograms played the record flawlessly. So OK, it isn’t the record.

As I had not experienced any issues with the 4002 in years I tried a 33 1/3 RPM LP and the Beogram 4002 played the entire record perfectly.

How is this possible?

The simple solution is to play only 33 1/3 RPM records on the 4002 as 99% of my LP’s are 33 1/3 RMP records, but I am wondering why this is happening and what, if anything can be done about it?

Any thoughts?

Jeff

Tracking force correctly set ?
Don't trust the scale inside the metal carriage housing - use a tracking force gauge.

How about checking that the shutter light hasn't developeda bad contact? When the carriage moves slowly at the beginning of an LP it does not pose any problems, then the fast travel across causes the bad contact?

Mmm. Just a guess.

Hi Martin,

You were right; the tracking force checked with the gram scale was at 1 gram. The manual calls for 1.2 grams and that is how it is now set.

As a result the tracking is perfect at either 33 1/3rd or 45 RMP's.

THANK YOU! Big Smile

Jeff
