I found out that I have a pair of S45-2 with stucked bass drivers. Obiously loose magnets, and no more spares aviable. Donator speakers are not an option to me, it still leaves me with pair of speakers wiht broken basses, and that bugs me for sure.

So,  I have to do something about it.

First, lets have a look inside, not much can be done from here.

I put a plastic sheet between centerpole and voicecoil to prevent any damages, then drive "stuck" on it.

Well, if it isn't broke, you can't fix it. So lets break it.

Supporting magnet on edge of table, "stucked" side down , I tap "gently" with screwdriver and hammer to break backplates glue, and backplate can be slided off. Slided, cant lift.

And magnet also.

Then to electrical parts, first wires.

Couldn't melt the glue, so have to cut my way here.

As you see magnet is back on its place. It is because voicecoil could easily get damaged othervice.

This was almost "Haven't a glue" situation. Surrounding comes off with bare fingers with no resistance at all.

Her it is. Bits and pieces.

First round, everthing centered, not too much pressure, I like to actually have some glue there.

It is easiest if backplate is in wise, few millimeters below toplevel, in that way, when magnet sucks down (and it does), you have still possibility to adjust shims if necessary. Shimmed in forehand, no otherway possible, and they must be off from backplate, we dont want to glue them there.

Removed from wise and pressed to end, ready to let dry under modest pressure.

Here it is. Reglued body of bass speaker! Yes!

All electrical work back together again. I started cautiously with small dots just in case something goes wrong.

I tough that I did take pictures from assembling cone, but I can't find them, stange. Anyway there are lots of pictures from procedure (refoaming) on this site. Meaning jump to dustcap after testing that cone movement is fine.

Congratulations! Just about to send the woofer of my M100 off for similar treatment. Though seeing the size of the magnet, I think it will need a crowbar!

And here they are, with their new friend, Beocenter 3300. Reglued, recapped and cleaned.

And sounding Good, as you can hear. I guess I have to put my small Linn speakers aside now. Alltough they are about same side, they clearly lack bass, but their high register is exelent. Anyway this time B&O wins.

This reglueing isn´t so hard afterall, pretty straighfoward mechanical job. Maybe messy with all that glue, time and space consuming, but at the end I think it´s rewarding. And compaired to hunting (good) donator speakers, or equalent new drivers, this may be even easier to do.

Great job Orava!

I'm the current bass locked owner of a pair of P45's :-(

Having very limited workshop/tool access, are you by any chance nearby Helsinki or know of any clever Helsinkian able to preform this 'operation'?

Cheers,

Glenn

They are different to your S45's in that the P45's have 2 smaller woofers in each speaker.

The locking symptom from shifting magnet and your remedy seem similar in both cases.

I'm extremely grateful for any help your able to offer.

Hi Glenn, keep posting about your P45s, I have a pair coming in, they will have some 2000 miles transport behind them when they arrive, so probably I will have 4 drivers to do.

Can't imagine what it takes to shift the magnets out of their place! Seems so unlikely

I agree. They are strong magnets but still this happens almost everytime P45 / P50 speakers are shipped, transported and
even also if just moved around the house.

And this one went to pieces easily just by hands....

There is clearly two different series of speakers, slightly different parts.

As this is in one piece, I can't put much glue here, have to prevent it to spread too much in to airgap.

Must let dry in magnet down position, again to prevent spreading glue to airgap. And extra glue to outside, thats why papertape.

And rest of glue goes here

The only still solid element.

Almost forget, if there is knocks on edges of voicecoils, best way to straighten them is with small round object and carefully roll against speaker body.

And what happened today, more gluing. This one as it was all pieces went with same procedure as my S45's.

Magnet to the body and pole to the backplate. I dont know much centering of magnet affects to speaker, but I do it as close as I can.

Almost there, few notes during building... As small as these elements, there is not as as much room as in S45's. Has to be absolutely clean, not any dust or spilled glue, air gap is 1mm, so shimming is, - I did use 0,2mm sheet, and still has to be very carefully when gluing cone back.

Probably some of you can regonaise where this came from. Quite perfect fit to give some pressure.Note glue all over magnet.

Picture doesnt show, but there is ink pen stripes on sides of brown bottom suspension to help positioning when reassembling.

And they are ready for new challenges.

One out of four is a little tense for uneven load, but I guess it is not any problem in normal use as normally load is even. Maybe there is little knock or something at edge of voice coil... Also you can see glue on edge of dust caps, could be painted in black.

So, summary for P45's. They are repairable as S45's. Easier to work with as they are smaller, but also more difficult to work with by same reason. Have to be extra careful with cleanness and every surface must be straight and "knock free". Shims I use were 1mm between pole and speakerbody, 0,2mm between pole and voicecoil. You should be extermely careful when gluing cones, check free movement in every step you made.

Hope this will help others to save some speakers, so we dont have to buy new ones, made in suspicious circumstances in somewhere in China...
