I am not an EE so I can;t explain difference, however I had the same issue until I swapped the power link cables. They need to be Mark III cables which are distinguished by a small black triangle embossed on the plastic sleeve at each end of the cable.
This is described in the manual as well as the positioning switch -- you can download the whole manual (and any others) from Beoworld if you pay the very modest annual subscription (one time fee if you chose not to renew !),
As the Beolab 4 manual has 3 whole pages on the positioning of these speakers and the use of switch you might find the annual fee worth while if you plan for example ceiling mounts.
However here is the key diagram - you may to abuse the switch to give yourself difference bass behaviours ...
