I've owned several Beo4s over the years and I love it! Even though I've had to move now to a non B&O TV for which I use Lintronic to control both this and my PVR. I also use it to control my other B&O stuff, BUT I've always found the way I have to depress both the up and down volume button to mute the sound very frustrating!
Is it just me who wishes there was a dedicated mute button on the remote?
Just interested in others' opinions really.

actually there is a direct way on the Beo4; just push in the middle of volume up-down buttons.
Thanks for that, but I don't find that always works. Pressing the up and down volume buttons simultaneously works, it has to be pretty exact in doing so. I press it with my thumb, but if I'm slightly more on either the up or down button, it doesn't work. Alternatively if I press each button with two separate fingers exactly simultaneously that does work, but it's not very practical.
Sound like it's me then!
I'd still prefer a mute button I think!
Many apologies for the multiple posts. Virtual keyboard on iPad stuck! Now on PC so hope this works!
Many of the 'hotel' version Beo4s have a dedicated mute button - probably because it's not intuitive to someone new to B&O like a hotel guest. You will probably lose other functionality though.
I agree with you, the difficulty of muting the audio has been my one major complaint about the Beo4 ever since I first got it in '96 or so. That and the lack of backlighting. I find hitting the middle of the volume key not terribly consistent in muting, more than half the time I seem to either raise or lower the volume instead.

I'm afraid I'm recovering from the BeoVirus.
MUTE: for me it works all the time any time........ just push firmly
I have no hard data, but I suspect the easiness might depend on the version of the Beo4. Some software versions might have more tolerance on the "simultaneous" criterion. Note that technically there is no middle button - you will be trying to press up & down at the same time, no matter how you use your fingers to achieve that.
Also, I find it easier on remotes that have stiffer rubber keys (less mileage behind them?).

I wonder, designwise, what was the intended benefit of muting via simultaneous press on two buttons at the same time - compared to a single dedicated button? Especially since very often most people need to mute in a hurry (your phone is ringing, for example).
Is there any non-obvious reason for this choice?
In my opinion the Beo4 has too many buttons as it is.

I guess they expect you to have a B&O phone that automatically mutes your audio system..
LOL
I'll rather stick to my iPhone then and stop challenging mute concept.

We all have a nigtmare trying to use the mute option on a BEO4! The volume goes up or down but only about 10% of the time does it mute. We've resorted to the easy option of using the mute button on the remote for the STB instead as it's a clear, easy to see button and works every time.
Dave.
As the OP it seems there are mixed opinions on the current mute method, but based upon replies so far, it seems that it doesn't cause problems for most owners. Tried last night repeated mute of the TV and despite pressing firmly, it managed to "non-mute" quite a few times. Not a majority of times by any means but still in my case unreliable 100% of the time.
As a Lintronics box owner, I've been musing over the idea of whether it's possible to allocate some other button (colour one?) to perform this function thereby muting with just one press, but as my buttons on the Beo 4 are programmed to perform multi-functions for my TV, PVR, Apple TV, B&O stereo system & DVD player plus LC2 lights I'm not sure I will have any button left for another function to be added!
Might explore the idea though.
Can't agree with the contributor who said there are already too many buttons on the Beo4. Then fact that it control so many devices with its current button layout is nothing short of amazing to me. I look at the controls for my Samsung DVD player, PVR and the remote we used to have for a Sony TV in the bedroom and now it's Finlux replacement also the one for our main Toshiba 46" TV in the lounge (now controlled by my Beo 4) and the mass and layout of buttons on them is (was) terrible IMO.
Many thanks to all who responded. Interesting to read the views of others.
Only found out on how to mute using a Beo4 because of this thread! I thought it didn't have that option. I guess I shouldn't have been so lazy and researched it.
Works fine for me? Very easy.
It seems that there (still) are 'problems' in the world, that I did not know of
A seperate button for 'Mute' - what a waste of buttons!
Except if it could replace the long overdue 'Text' button.
But wouldn't it be a bit awkward to have the 'Mute' function there
Had some ideas about how to rearrange the buttons (in case I could get rid of the least used button/the 'Text' button), but I guess it doesn't matter anymore, since we will have to deal with the BeoRemote One for the future.
Anyone having 'problems' with muting there?
MM
There is a tv - and there is a BV
Millemissen: (in case I could get rid of the least used button/the 'Text' button)
I still use it - far more often than STOP for example. But never in my life have I needed the SAT button.
What I meant with 'too many buttons already' was that I wouldn't want the Beo4 to have yet another row. I have reasonably long fingers, but still find many operations awkward when you have to stretch from one end of the remote to another. The selection is fine for using just B&O kit, but obviously there are actually too few buttons once you try to map them to the multitude of operations many 3rd party products need.
you can never have enough buttons, dials, levers switches or VU gauges in my mind ....
we tend to forget there is more to design than designing.
Mark: you can never have enough buttons, dials, levers switches or VU gauges in my mind ....
Maybe a MCL panel xx00 or rather the BeoLink7000 would do the trick, then!
