As our tangential turntables age problems are inevitably going to arise.
The tonearm on my 4002 suddenly started skating across the entire record rather than even attempting to play it.
I had the dustcover off, workshop manual in hand was about to check all the tonearm adjustments from A to Z.
However just before I started I noticed the MMC20CL cartridge was ever so slightly askew and thought, I wonder if that might be the problem? It was.
Now I am talking about the SLIGHTEST little bit of an angle, but by pressing the cartridge securely in place the skating problem instantly disappeared.
I mention this because if it can happen to me, it can happen to others.
Now I don’t mean to suggest that this is a regularly occurring issue, but as the Beograms age and we take the cartridge out from time to time to clean it, this sort of thing can happen. And there is NO sense in performing adjustments to a turntable that doesn’t need them.
My other 4 tangential turntables have never had this problem, but if/whenever they do, I know what to look for FIRST…. and save a whole lot of unnecessary trouble.
