Hi all,
I recently acquired a Beogram 5000 Type 5803 in ok visual, condition but not working.
The tone arm doesn't operate properly. Sometimes,
it cues over the record but doesn't drop,
when it does drop, when you stop it, it doesn't lift back up,
the arm never returns to rest, it only just gets of the record and then stops,
sometimes when you go to cue the arm, because it doesn't lift up, it smashes into the side of the record (dont worry, I fitted a stuffed cartridge to it when testing it).
I've pulled it apart and visually I can't see anything obvious, though I know nothing about these machines technically and this is the first Beogram I have pulled apart. Only thing I saw, was a long spring that didn't have any tension on it secured at the base of the tone arm assembly and when the arm moves left and right, the bottom semi circle black plastic of the tone arm assembly rubs on the top of this long spring?
Anything I can check with the arm operation before I throw in the towel and take it to my local B&O repair centre?
Also, the balance weight at the back of the arm moves in and out and also turns left and right. Is it supposed to be able to go in and out?
As a Gold member, you have access to the service manual for this turntable. The adjustment points and parts are all detailed. It will need a proper clean and relubrication before anything is 'pulled apart'. No point in diving in blind when the resource to do it properly is available.
Go to the 'products' section tab at the top of the 'Main Site' page, search under music systems, Beogram record decks and Beogram 5000 record deck.
Dave.
Yes I have the service manual already and have cleaned the various contact switches and setup platter height. But I don't understand how I can setup the arm when it behaves differently every time it is cued. Whatever makes it go back all the way to rest position and lift up and down must be a bit dicky I think as it behaves differently nearly every cue.
I couldn't find lubrication points in the service manual.
The long spring that scrapes against the bottom of the tonearm assembly doesnt seem correct. Surely B&O wouldn't of designed a component to scrape against a spring body? Does anyone know the spring I'm talking about or has one apart that they can check? Its right at the bottom of the arm assembly, the lowest point.
Thanks
I'll run through the service operations and just set/check everything is setup properly.
I'll post up my findings.
Seems everything is in spec.
Upon closer inspection of the tonearm assembly, it appears something is broken as I found a very small piece of black loose plastic and which I think may have to do with the tonearm assembly having dropped down onto that spring. That's why it behaves differently every time, sometimes the assembly is sitting ok and other times it isn't and causes arm problems.
Looks like its a spare parts donor.
Could you post a pic or 2
Collecting Vintage B&O is not a hobby, its a lifestyle.
The lift plate has two nubs that ride in two plastic saddles that are very fragile. When one of the saddles breaks off the lift plate drops and rests on that spring. I don’t know a good fix, searching for it right now.
