Recently, I found these Beovox 2500 cube speakers for sale which were not in a good shape. As you can see from the photographs, they were sprayed silver for some unknown reason. Not only that, but it wasn't done very well. The person clearly did not even remove the grills before spraying and so the drivers were covered in this heavy silver paint. You can see this in the pictures below:

So I removed each grill, sanded the old paint off carefully and proceeded to poke through each individual hole on the grills. Many of these were filled with paint and heavy glue by the previous owner so this took a lot of time as you can imagine! Next, once all of the grills were sorted and looking good I prepared the units for painting. I sanded down each cube gently until I had a really smooth finish. Luckily, the bodies of these were in really good condition with minimal chips and damage to the wood. I thought long and hard about removing the drivers completely at this stage as I'm sure many of you would have done, but I decided to cover them properly instead.

Next, I found a suitable paint, which wasn't too easy actually. It had to be as close to the original as possible, so a kind of dark grey (not black) with a sligh blue tinge. I think I came pretty close to the original, and after about 4 coats I was really pleased with the result!

As you can see, I need to replace the wiring, as these were butchered off by a previous owner sadly. God knows why!

I am also missing the small B&O decals on each tweeter, but I am hoping to have some of these made up at a later date. I polished the stands and both cubes were looking great. They also work well with Beovox 5000s, which is the main thing, adding something nice to the overall sound.

Overall though, pretty pleased with the results!

Ben.

Hi Ben, and so you should be.  Nicely done.

The question is, how functional are they?  Due to the age, they are likely to need some internal restoration.  Are all tweeters working in each Cube? Amazing if they are.

They do make a big difference to the overall sound when used with the Beovox 5000's.

What actual paint and colour did you use?  This may be useful for others who want to do similar.

Thanks for the pictures.

Dave.

Thanks Dave, appreciated!

No, not all tweeters are fully functional sadly, at least a couple are gone. I am planning to sort those out when I replace the wire and also the internal caps, but that is a job for another day.

I will find and identify the paint I found at some point and post for any of those interested,

I'm currently away studying at university so this was a project for the Christmas break, but I'm sure I can continue again at Easter time!

Once the Cubes are properly sorted, you will need the matching Beovoxes!

Do test the speakers, as Dave suggests. One of them seems to miss a bit of its cone!

Inside mine, I found a completely dead capacitor.

Keep us posted!

Nice Job Ben, looking pretty good. I did some "restoration" work my self a while ago on these cubes.

Have a few tweeters left so if you have defect ones just let me now and you can have them for free.

That's a good offer!  Not easy to find working ones these days.

Many thanks for your offer Leslie, I will check and come back to you on that!

Thanks for the thread too, you have done a great job on those cubes!

There was an old thread on the archived forum about replacing the wiring as well, I will consult that for the next stage

My next job is to replace the wiring, does anyone have a picture of their cubes at the base where the wires meet?

What are the small little grey tube cover things at the base of the cube? I want to try and make these are original as possible ideally so will try and source some of the same.

Hi Ben,

Those covers/tubes are used when they are suspended from the ceiling. I think it's in the user manual.

Many thanks Dave,

Of course, I do have the manual so I should have looked there!

I remember a good thread from Frede possibly on the old forum about suspending them from the ceiling. I wonder if the sound is improved or not?

Nice colour match,

has anyone had any success repairing failed tweeters on these?

Frede at 'Classic Audio' used ones I found from another Beoworld member for my restored ones. I'm not aware of anyone actually repairing these, only swapping them out. Frede will be the man to ask.

Welcome to Beoworld!

The drive units are special models, also used by Mc Intosh. They are 16 Ω I believe - as rare as hen’s teeth.

Send them away to Frede Kristensen.

just discovered those cubes(Beovox 2500) ....

We've got a similar product, in fact a 2.2 system from GRUNDIG called Audiorama 700 (made from 1971 to 1975), which are 2 cubes (with 6 speakers 88mm considered as medium/tweeters) rotating on a pyramidal foot, and a bass box (one 20cm for each channel, including the filtering to the cubes)

Really amazing set, we enjoy listening them, in parallel to our beovox C75 + REL Q100 subwoofer, all this plugged to our Beocenter 9500
