Hi

present setup 2 front 6000s, 2 rear 6000s and a Beolsb 2 subwoofer. Thinking of upgrading front 6000s. What would be the best upgrade to really make a difference?

Its down to budget I guess.

8000s or BL1s if you are into tall speakers and have a bl2. These are great value now.

Hi Thorne.

BL8000 or BL 1.

Best option, best price!

Sell the BL6000 + BL2. Buy BL9.

Penta's? But then again you have the BL2.

That's what I did, replaced the front 8000's and BL2 with BL9, still have 6000's for the rear (although I have a set of 12-1's meant to replace the 6000's - just have not had the time to install)

BL9s are the obvious answer. Better bass for music and totally different top end - listen first though as not everyone likes the same thing. Obviously BL5s are the best but at quite a price.

i was thinking about BL8000, my dealer has second-hand 8002s. Much better?

Very similar but different amplifiers. Nothing wrong with 8000s - better musically than 6000s but similar. In my view, which is no more valid than anyone else's, I would characterise the speaker choices as:

BL6000 - OK speakers - look nice but a bit flat when I listened to them in the past. Did hear a splendid set up in Venice at an exhibition which was 4 6000s and a BL2. Really surprised me so set up clearly a factor.

BL8000 - more refined and nice top end detail - still needs a sub-woofer as if left to its own devices, the bass sounds less detailed - speaker as a whole works better with sub woofer.

BL4000 - often forgotten - real little gem - very convenient - go to Struer and they are everywhere.

BLPenta - getting old and will usually need work. Plenty of bass but a little one note at bottom end - has a bass hump in the frequency response which gives a warm and pleasant sound if not completely accurate! Top end is veiled compared to the newer speakers though better when you sit down as tweeters then at ear level! Very easy to listen to.

BL1 - very large and surprisingly bass light - same basic chassis as the later BL9 but completely different to listen to - a grown up BL8000 and still need a subwoofer.

BL3 - surprisingly good for their size but quite bright sounding and at times sound like two speakers with slight disjoint. Lots of bass but gets confused at higher volumes ? due to ABR

BL9 - excellent speakers - you don't need a subwoofer - again quite bright and you should listen to all acoustic lens speakers as they do sound very different - I find them more tiring to listen to.

BL5 - simply fantastic - they disappear sonically and the bass almost sounds reduced - until you leave the room and listen from outside! Due to the incredible detail - only problem is that you tend to turn them up louder than you might mean to. Not recommended if you live above someone.

BL2 - lots of LFE for audio visual viewing but I don't find them good for loud music where they dominate the sound too much. I tend to switch mine off in that situation.

I am afraid I cannot comment on the newer speakers as I have simply not listened to them!

I never heard the 8002s but they would be newer than the 8000s. On the flip side the extra bass the 8002s have will be lost with the BL2.

I did enjoy my 8000s with the BL2 but no going back after the Lab 1s.

This has just reminded me my 8000s are boxed away in the attic.

Thanks, Peter, for the excellent summary. Food for thought. Again I cannot find BL9s on the B&O website. Has thecdesignation changed?

LifeStyle AV had a few pairs of Beolab 9's not too long ago, but I see they're gone now as well.

Boy, I wish I lived in Europe, with a vibrant and relatively reliable second hand market.

Quite some time ago, I replaced my front BL8000 + BL2 combination with BL3 + BL2, and I was very satisfied. Mind you, they were connected to the old Avant, and in a medium sized room. I moved my 6000s to the rears, and sold my 8000s.

I'm eager to get my hands on the Beolab 9 speakers soon, as I've heard from many on here that for value to sound, they're on par with the BL4000 value proposition.

Good luck and please post pictures!
