Hello, I'm hoping that someone will be able to help me with this as I'm stumped. I have a Beosound 9000 connected to a Beolink Passive amp by both a Masterlink cable and a Powerlink mk2 cable. There is a B & O IR Eye plugged into the Beolink passive amp and a pair of non-B & O speakers attached. The problem is that I cannot get the Beolink passive amp to switch on, or alter the volume using my Beo4 remote control - the Beosound will switch on, the volume goes up and down etc. but no sound because the amp does not switch on - to operate the amp I have to press the "play" button on the IR Eye, and the same to change the volume, using the up/down buttons. Also, when everything is operating I can only switch it off using the the "play" button on the IR Eye again - the Beo4 remote will not turn it off. Is there a setting that I have missed - or could the IR Eye be faulty (I have only recently bought it) ? Thank you in anticipation.
Depends on how you have it connected. Are you trying to use the passive speakers as the main speakers for the BS9000 or as an additional zone? If it is to be connected to the BS9000 pull the ML and IR connection and ensure you have the thick fully mounted Powerlink connected to the powerlink socket. Then the passive will act as the amp for the BS9000. If it is to be to another zone, connect only the ML and IR and option program correctly.
Ah, you know... A little B&O here, a little there
Hi there, thanks for your reply, yes, the passive speakers are the main speakers for the BS9000, all operating in the same room as one unit. The Powerlink cable is the mk2 (thick) type, I only added it because I couldn't get the system to work with the Masterlink cable, so thought they must operate differently ? I have actually got it to work now, with some additional reading and "trial & error". I added "Link" to the menu on the Beo4 remote, and if I select "Link" first, then press "CD" or "Radio" it nows works as I expected - but I don't know if this is the correct way to do it ?
Raeuber:Hello beofan, first of all: You don't need the powerlink connection, only masterlink. Did you set the correct options? BS 9000: A.OPT = 0 BL Passive: L.OPT = 6 Regards Räuber

BS 9000: A.OPT = 0
BL Passive: L.OPT = 6

Hello Rauber, thank you for your reply, that is very informative, I did not realise that it was possible to set different options for both the BS9000 and the Beolink passive amp - the reason I added the Powerlink cable was because I could not get the amp to respond with the Masterlink connection, and thought the two cables must operate in different ways. I have actually got the amp to work with the BS9000 now, by adding "Link" to the Beo4 remote menu, and selecting "Link" then CD or Radio - I can now work the volume, change functions, and switch it off using the remote. As to the option set - I think it is A.Opt 4, but I set that by pointing the remote at the IR Eye (with the BS9000 shielded in a cupboard), so don't know whether to try changing anything - or just leave it as it is, since it seems to be working ?
As BeoMegaMan already wrote, the Beolink Passive should function as an amplifier without the ML and ir. Only the powerlinkcable should be fine.
BS9000 in option 1.
Make sure that with (un)plugging, you take the power from the 9000. It detects when powering on if the powerlink is used.
Thank you for all the replies, I think I understand more about connection methods now than I did yesterday. The IR Eye I will keep connected , as the BS9000 is in a cabinet with a drop front (so it can be out of sight), the Eye means I can still operate it when the cabinet is closed. I'll leave the extra cable (Masterlink) connected, simply because the routing means it's a struggle to remove again - but at least I'm clearer on the option settings now. Hopefully this thread may help anyone else who is stuck too .
When you have only speakers connected to the passive, you should only connect the thick powerlink cable. You do not have to use any link commands and the passive will work a being part of the 9000. You don't need to operate it and It will switch on and off fully automatically.

Just tested this.
Only a passive with fully powerlink without ML or ir. It works great.
As I already mentioned. Power up the BS9000 when cables are connected.
Has worked a thousand times before - so why shouldn't it in this case?
The BL Passive (as an amp) is one of the oldest and most reliable pieces of B&O hardware, that we have!
I have used several in different setups for years without any trouble.
If used this way, it is just an amp that triggers on the right PL cable - nothing special there.

There is a tv - and there is a BV
Of course he can!!!
But why should you hide a BS9000?
Never heard of that before
N.B. I did write 'The BL Passive (as an amp).......'
Raeuber:I didn't ever hear of somebody who hides a Beosound 9000, only an Essence, Playmaker or Moment...
Aha!
And how (and why) would you hide a BS Moment?
Just don't say, because it looks like it does
You would not be able to use it then - you probably would not buy it either.
Since a couple of people have queried why I have the BS9000 in a cabinet that can hide it, two reasons - first it keeps it from getting covered in dust (it's not the easiest thing to clean thoroughly and carefully), and secondly, for security reasons (when I don't want such an expensive item visible all the time). I should add that generally the cabinet door is open so I can enjoy the "show" when CD is on random I'd post a picture (which would make all clear), but I don't know how to do it on here.
A quick update, as I have now had time (work permitting) to properly act on the useful advice that people have been kind enough to give. Masterlink has been disconnected (so only Powerlink2 connection now), IR also removed, and BS9000 set to A.Opt 1 - now it works just as I wanted, so thanks to all for their help.
Great news and thanks for the update. Not everyone is so considerate to show the resolution to their problems.
Dave.
Hi beofan and thanks for getting back on the subject.
You can post pictures from a browser on PC/Mac - not on an iDevice.
Use the 'Reply' button, and you will se some options for adding photos etc..
It should be possible to add pictures using the Beoworld app too - but I have no experience how to, since I only use the standard browser version of the Beoworld site.
Thanks MM, this is the setup for the BS9000, I quite like the look of it in this cabinet, the backlights are a recent addition
Hi,
How about my source is beo essence to a beolink passive to drive beovox 2.2 ? it auto on when recieved a signal but i cannot turn the volume up or down. but i can power it off only . please advice ... thanks
Hi Abeng,
are you sure, that you use the right (fully monted RJ45 to Din) PL cable from the Essence to the Passive amp?

Would you be able to change the volume on the passive with powerlink2 connected or do you change on the connected device?

You change the volume on the device driving the Passive. The Passive itself has no volume control.
Usually when we talk about the BeoLink Passive, we mean the box (connected to ML) and the connected ir-eye for local control.
However when the box is used just for amplfication, there is no ir-eue connected. Only the (right) PL cable and the (passive) speakers cables (and the power cable).
Since it merely is an amp, all controls are done in the main system (as Stan wrote).
Good point MM. Thanks for clarifying.
Stan
Great, thanks!
