Do your cats see your speakers as scratch posts? BL5 / BL9 / BL20

I know this is a ridiculous discussion, however I'm considering a purchase of BL20's where the only thing which Is holding me back is the fear that my two Siamese cats will see the speakers as scratch posts!

Has anyone had experience of this?

What are your thoughts?

I'm not a cat owner, but I read somewhere that cats don't like certain surface textures (Aluminium foil I think was one of them). Maybe if you covered the speakers up to cat height with something that they don't like, they would leave your BLs alone. Once the cats have formed the habit of not touching your speakers, you might be able to remove the covers. Punishing the animal doesn't do any good, they would just scratch the speakers when you're not around.

Here's a BeoLab 5 from a pair we bought a couple of years ago..

Apparently his cat used to take a run up at the rear of them, jump, then hang there (also digging it's rear claws into the fret) until it got bored, then it would go and do the same to the other speaker.

He thought this was cute and funny.  Personally, I don't advocate cruelty to animals, but if that was my cat I'd have given it a free flying lesson - with the aid of my right foot...

How on earth you could think that was cute and funny I just do not know!

Speakers worth an absolute fortune and ruined! I would have been absolutely livid

Interesting, perhaps not such a ridiculous question after all.

Can't believe the mess of those 5's!!

Maybe if I got them a nice new scratch post and put it in the same room, playing with them around it, maybe even using some cat nip to entice them to it.  Then if they went near the speakers I could spray them with water?  Certainly for the first few weeks I wouldn't leave them alone with them until I'm sure they wouldn't touch them. I'm sure it's just an exercise of training them, but anyone with Siamese cats will know, despite the fact they're super intelligent (for a cat), they also don't like being told what to do.  Reminds me of myself really!!

Believe it or not but I trained our cat for not accessing the living room and the lower floor with the bedroom, guest room, bathroom etc. She can go to the kitchen and the dining room but not elsewhere – there’s an invisible frontier. I did this by systematically saying very loud "No!" and running behind her the moment she tried to leave her allowed zone. This took me a couple of months (I usually work at home) and some discipline but she has completely accepted this now. You have to know that she’s my wife’s cat (she found her in the garden) but today behaves like she never knew her and prefers to sit on me. Most probably she’s thinking now that I‘m the main tiger in the house.

Ah, and during the night our cat sleeps in the kitchen behind a closed door (she has three different sleeping possibilities inside and an electronic cat flap for going outside), just to be sure Smile. But as you can imagine, this is not an option for children …

I love cats, but I can't eat a whole one...

Not a cat lover at all as you might can tell, but I can also guarantee that most of the damnable fur balls will treat anything like a speaker grill as a scratching post. In all my audio years I've seen more than my share of scratched up speakers. You can put an alternate post in the room all you want and I'm betting the animal will ignore it deliberately and head for the speakers.

Jeff

I'm afraid I'm recovering from the BeoVirus. Sad

Just a thought; I don't have any direct experience with these products.  At least one of them mentioned speakers.

Although I have to confess that I've never heard a BeoLab 5 with cat-scratch fever, I am pretty certain that they'll sound exactly the same with or without the feline decorations.

We have two cats and I own....er.....lots of loudspeakers! The female cat once walked towards one of my loudspeakers and stretched out a paw - my wife was upstairs at the time and said my shout made HER jump! Both cats ran away and have never been anywhere near any of my loudspeakers since - and that was two years ago!

Generally, though, when it comes to cats scratching things, we have found that a firm "NO" plus a quick blast of water in the face from a water pistol or a plant spray bottle soon gets the message across.

Well said Adam. Same experience here!

I had a cat that was never allowed outdoors because of the traffic and other compelling reasons. This may sound drastic but to save the B & O speakers as well as the furniture I had the cats front claws removed. It did cause some angst on my part to deciide to do it, but the cat got over the operation quickly and seemed to not hold a grudge.

My cat's front paws were de-clawed when they were kittens. Their veterinarian recommended the procedure when I adopted them. I know there is a lot of debate about it, but no regrets here and our things are totally fine. As are the cats :-)

Had a cat for 2 years with my Beolab 5 - it was never a problem that she was scratching the covers. The cat was able to go outside, maybe that helps....

This is despicable behaviour and  the procedure is illegal in the UK unless for medical reasons - quite rightly so, in my opinion. People think of it as a human having their finger nails removed but it is more like having a finger cut off at the first knuckle.

As far as I'm concerned it is animal cruelty and you should be ashamed of yourself.

Interesting thread! We will host my mother in laws two kittens for a week when she goes abroad. Worried about the BL8000's and the Avant 55. Thinking of covering the speakers with thick towels or blankets or trying to hide them completely.

After one pair of Penta's, BS2000, two pairs of 6000's, my vinyl collection and we finally decided to get our pal declawed. He still goes to them without damaging anything now. His new favorite thing however, is pushing over the Beo6 whenever we aren't around. His subtle way at still getting back at me. Screen replaced twice now. He's only 3. It's going to be a long expense life together I can tell. Big Smile

Ah, you know... A little B&O here, a little there

What I know about cat behaviour is that cats will scratch (in general) horizontally or vertically. Both my cats are of the first type so they stay of my BL8000's. Mine then to scratch on our rotan dining room chairs which is ok as the rotan is very strong.

We have two cats. The lazy has never oncecshown interest in the Beolab 9. The playful one has on two occations put her paws with claws dug into the fret, both times I was there and my heart skipped as I ran to stop her. The speakers look fine to this day after almost 2 years of them living together and I'm not really worried anymore.
