Hello can anyone give me some advice.  I have a 6500 stacking system, CD, Cassette and Turntable, and amp working great, however, I am getting horrendous static from the radio, I am using a thread aerial, the only channel I can get is Radio 1 with heavy static noise, trying to get reception on the rest, forget it!

Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Thanks

David

Try plugging the TV aerial in it and see if that is any better. If it is, you need a better aerial!

Hello David, it's nice to hear from you again.

If I remember rightly, you had a Beocenter 2200, the piece that first caused exposure to the 'Beovirus'. If you still have this piece, do the problems with FM occur when using the same aerial with the 2200? If so then it almost certainly an aerial problem as Peter suggests.

Hi Cleve long time no hear!!  Yes you are quite correct I have still the 2200, 4000, and 3000, plus two 5500 stacking systems and the one 6500 system - sound in every room!!  Definitely got the B&O Virus bad.  It has taken a long time for recovery.  I will try out Peter's suggestion, however, I wonder if the problem is coming from the school buildings directly behind me?  Strangely enough I have brilliant sound in the living room off the 5500 amp/tuner with the rabbit ears, the 2200 system is fine with the cord aerial in the study, as are the other systems in the other rooms with the exception of the 6500 in the back bedroom.  The sounds from the CD, cassette and turnable are absolutely great, I wonder is there something wrong internally with the tuner?

Thanks David

Also check that it is not near a wifi router or LED lamps - I had almost good FM reception until I changed the bulbs in my kichen to low wattage LED bulbs - the aerial was in a roof void near them, and they practically wiped out my FM reception - the aerial is now outdoors some way from the building and reception is good again. I tested it by switching them off and the static etc dissappeared.

Andrew - thanks for your information, found out that I live in a terrible FM reception area for Digital - a school behind me is blocking signals.  Took Peter's advice and used a FM digital expander aerial bought from Maplins and this did the trick, the reception on all stations is great.  Thanks David

Cleve - thanks bought an extender aerial connector from Maplins FM Digital.  Bad reception at the back of the house as my garden backs onto a school which is blocking reception.  Now with the FM Digital expander aerial getting all stations with brilliant reception.  Peter was right on the ticket with this one.  Good to see you are still about.  Best regards David

Peter - thanks a bunch, your tip worked really well, have a bad reception on FM Digital on the back of the house as it backs onto a school - the buildings are blocking my reception so purchased an extender FM Digital aerial (booster) that has really done the trick, brilliant reception on all channels.

Thanks again

Actually had the same problem with my 5500 - very thick stone walls in one part of the house but fixed with a boosted aerial. Same as you, worked with a screwdriver in the socket in other parts of the house!! Smile Glad all is working!

Many thanks Peter, my two 5500, 4000 and 3500 systems work great everywhere else in the house, in fact, the 5500 is in the living room directly under the main bedroom that caused me the problem, and yet the 5500 works fine with a Rabbit Eared Aerial, not even fully extended!!  Weird to say the least. Do appreciate your comments as I was nearly at my wits end, thought it was something to do the with tuner and was ready to pack it up and have it sent over the Quality Dream Audio to have Ray fix it!!

Cleve - guess what!  After another serious bout of the Beovirus I have just bought myself a 1200 Reel to Reel Tape, found I had some old tape reels at home and thought I will look for one, got it and links in super with the rest of the systems, in fact, I am using it with 2200 (the old workhorse) which is now relocated in the small bedroom at the front of the house.  It means now that I have 5500 in the drawing room, 4400 in the dining room, 6500 in the master bedroom, and a 3500 in the study, and 5500 in living room; might get another bout of the bug shortly, and get something for the other guest room - wonder what system I should go for????

Best regards

David,

I'm not sure I should be recommending anything to feed your addiction! As someone who is in remission with the Beovirus (medically inaccurate but you'll know what I mean) I really ought to be counselling restraint.

Cleve - guess what found I had a B&O 1200 Reel to Reel in the attic.  Was clearing the attic out last week and found this, working perfectly even the old tapes are running, must have been up there 20 years.  I remember when I found it in the original box that I had purchased this years ago cannot believe it is in such good condition.

No not purchasing any further equipment as I have sound in every available room, the only place left is the garage.  I think that the virus has finally gone, actually have purchased red line speakers for the 5500 system in the drawing room to enhance the volume, otherwise, very happy with the rest.

I am surprised at the take-up of B&O systems in Northern Ireland, it appears that a number of people are now realizing the quality of the sound.  Friends of mine have been buying from a range of dealers on the internet over the past few months, it might be the introduction and popularity that LPs are back in vogue. I am trying to get my friends to join the site.

Peter was mentioning to Cleve that the number of people in Northern Ireland that are buying B&O systems, three friends of mine have already purchased various systems from B&O internet companies, ranging from 5500 through to 9000.  After hearing the sound quality of my equipment they suddenly realized what they had been missing over the years.  I think that the popularity of the LP has now increased the popularity of the Hi Fi.

Best wishes DavidLets have a Party !!!

Hi David,

There are a few pieces that would still tempt me and a 1200 system with the Beocord is one of them. Well done and I only wish I had an attic with forgotten pieces of B&O. All I can manage sadly is the 'forgetting' bit - the ageing process is taking its toll
