Hi,
I have recently privately acquired a BeoGram 4500 that is in reasonable shape - but I'd like to bring it back to its full potential. I don't think that it needs repair - just a tune-up...
Does anyone on the list have a recommendation of someone that can do such a thing? Preferably someone in Denmark / Northern Germany / Southern Sweden so that I can drive it myself...
Of course, I know a couple of other people I can ask for this advice but if anyone here has some experience to share, I'd be happy to learn about it. If you have someone to recommend, please advise on the list. If you have a recommendation of someone to avoid, please email me offline.
Cheers

Hi Geoff,
a very nice machine which I also have. As a first point of contact for any expert repair/restoration, I'd always try contacting fellow member 'Dillen' in Copenhagen. His expertise is second to none and quality is top notch.
Surely you have enough engineers remaining in Struer to help you!
If it needs just a clean and relubrication then you should really try yourself but I guess you have little time to spare to do it. Adjusting things to the service manual specs is usually problem free and worth a try yourself if you're not happy doing component replacements, then leave that to the experts.
Dave.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the advice re. Dillen!
Of course there are some folks still left in Struer who know a thing or two about this analogue stuff - and I've asked around here about that already. I just wanted some extra opinions. We don't get many turntables coming back tor Struer for repair - so if Dillen is doing it regularly, then he might be the better option.
The good thing is that it's in great shape - all it probably needs is a new belt and cartridge, and some lubrication and alignment. However, currently, my biggest concern is the fact that our clothes washing machine at home stopped working on Sunday night - and my spare time in the near future will be spent trying to get that back up and running instead of reducing the wow and flutter on my vinyl albums... ;-)
Hi again Geoff,
Martin (Dillen) is a genuine genius and I hope he can help or point you in the right direction. He may have a source for a new belt too.
As for the cartridge, if you already have one with it and it needs retipping, here is the place to send it to:

A new belt should make a huge difference.
Good luck with the washing machine!
Type 5951?
blah-blah and photographs as needed
Orava:Type 5951?
yes.

That's a beautiful turntable!
That was in the movie 'National Lampoons Christmas Vacation' :) and a new film on Netflix the other night about a group of late 2o somethings 'Act like a Woman, think like a Man' :)
Definitely Martin - you have met him possibly. He was in Struer with Lee and myself though he may have just visited the museum. He has a collection to die for!
Peter
Thanks for the help everyone! I'll give Martin a shout and take a drive to Copenhagen, it seems.

I know Martin is very busy at the moment and has a bit of a backlog. I also need to send a rather 'special' item to him soon - more of that in a new thread soon. It will be in exceptional hands. Also contact Axel if you need a retip.

Vintage Bang & Olufsen
the_o_master:Am I too irrational when I say that I can smell a new Beogram in the near future?
One could only live in hope. It would be amazing for B&O to invest again in an 'old' media of vinyl but with the resurgance, who knows. I doubt it however. There is obviously a market for TT's. Just look at the Thorens, Pro-ject ranges and the plethora of TT's that are now available - usually at high prices. I dread to think how much a BG4000 equivalent would be now from B&O but would be overjoyed even if they were to make a special edition TT or a concept piece.
B&O policy seems to be Beoplay, TV's, speakers and streaming. No seperates based music systems so I suspect a BG is completely off their radar. Pity.
Dvae.
Sadly, I don't think we will ever see anything mechanical from B&O again. It's too costly and troublesome to produce anything but PCBs, displays and software.- But again, maybe that would indeed put B&O where noone else is at present ...

the_o_master:finding out here that Geoff! has bought a BG4500 and want to tune it up! ….Am I too irrational when I say that I can smell a new Beogram in the near future?
Geeze... if I told you that I just bought my dinner at Burger King, would you smell a BeoBurger in the near future?
(And just to lay any theories to rest before they take off: Yes... I actually just ate at Burger King with my kids. No, Bang & Olufsen is not currently planning on selling hamburgers. At least, not that I know of...)

Well now... What would Beoburger be like?
Orava:Well now... What would Beoburger be like?
Expensive and well finished

Martin, you are most probably right. The engineering costs to develop a new Beogram would be for sure very high.
And I know how those manager think: reduce costs, increase effectivity (read: force your people to work more in shorter time for same amount) and sell expensive!
In general it can be said that nobody, or lets say very few of them want to risk and do anything out of schema.
One could say we are not rational hoping to see a red light over the B&O logo on the tonearm again but that in deed would be really revolutionary and maybe would bring the B&O to the place they deserve. And it would be for sure not the first time B&O would do something like that in their history...
Very interesting answer Geoff and sort of wordplay if i may say
But if we try to play deduction correctly, B&O hasn't produced Burgers in the past and they did a record players
And if I read your post again, only thing you disclaimed in your answer is actually that B&O is planning to sell burgers
Let's say the smell is still present for me
valve1: Orava:Well now... What would Beoburger be like? Expensive and well finished
and long lasting
pre-double
Yes, so sad.
Where are todays remote controls, touch panels, tangemtials, magic glass doors etc "wonders at the time"? Todays innovations and inspirations.
Hope B&O do not end up like --ähöm-- , withc is selling basically same device to people time after time, year after year, with nothing really new.
Luckily B&O has speakers, but rest of the product line? Boring, imo.
Question: What is the ideal weight of a beo-burger beef?
Answer: 150-200 beograms!
