Hi All

I have just acquired a BS9000 Mk1 & a pair of Beolab 5000 speakers. The BS9000 is working fine - as are the speakers & displays.

However the BS9000 responds to input via the manual keypad - but not remote. I have a BL 1000 and have entered SOUND - 1 - STORE whilst the unit is in standby. The standby LED doesn't blink and it still won't respond to the BL 1000. I have also tried with a Beo4. Mine is an early version & the display doesn't flash when you press standby & list - but I can get to 'A Opt.' and then press 1. Again no LED flash from the BS9000 & no response from either IR remote.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks!

You don't happen to have a plasma TV operating in the same room when trying do you? I assume probably not but a plasma display will jam the IR sensor on a BS9000 big time.

Jeff

I'm afraid I'm recovering from the BeoVirus. Sad

Make sure the speakers are connected to the Beosound - I don't think it operates by remote if they aren't.  And make sure the remotes are working using a digital camera.

Hi - Thanks for the replies.

The speakers are connected - it all works fine using the manual keypad on the BS9000. The displays are working fine too on the BL5000.

There is no TV in the room. I have checked the remotes with a TV in a different room. Both appear to be fine.

Hi Machineage,

This may be a long shot, but is it possible that the speakers may be set to "Auto" mode instead of left or right?  It is a few years since I tried this, but I think from memory there is a quirk with the wiring on the Beolab 3000/4500/5000 speakers that lets them pick up audio from the Powerlink sockets when they are set to Auto mode, although they won't provide the current drain on the Powerlink trigger pin that the Beosound 9000 needs to see to operate via remote control.

One way to tell if this is happening is that the speakers would both be playing left channel audio, instead of stereo.  It is worth checking that the speaker switches are set to Left or Right, not Auto.

 Kind regards, Steve.

Thanks Steve

Yes I checked for this last night - and switched each speaker to L & R alternatively. I also swapped the leads - then tried one lead to one BL5000 & the second BL5000 wired from the first. No change when attempting Option 1 in any of the configurations Sad

Hi,

Thanks for this.  It does sound as though something is stopping the 9000 from accepting the option change commands if you are not getting the answering LED flash when trying to change this.  Why not try powering off the 9000 for a minute or so, then power it on, wait 30 seconds and try to set it to option 1 again.

Kind regards, Steve.

Thanks Steve

OK this is the procedure this morning. The BS9000 has been powered down & isolated since last night. The speakers have been in 'Audio' mode.

1) Unlplug the speakers from mains power

2) Move each speaker VIDEO / AUDIO / OFF switch to the OFF position

3) Connect each speaker to the BS9000 via PL Mk2 fully wired 8 core cables

4) Plug the speakers into the mains - note the standby lights now illuminated

5) Plug the BS9000 into the mains

6) Move the VIDEO / AUDIO / OFF speaker switches into the AUDIO position

7) Power the BS9000 up via the rear red push button. Note the speaker relays activating & the displays lighting up for a second whilst the standby lights extinguish - then the relays activating again & the displays shutting down - standby lights now illuminated. Note also a relay in the BS9000 activating - then de-activating - and the standby light now illuminated.

8) Attempt to switch to Option 1 using BL 1000 - point at BS9000 and press SOUND - 1 - STORE.

9) Nothing. No confirmation flash from the BS9000 standby light - no reaction to pressing CD or Radio on the BL 1000.

10) Try with Beo4 - press STANDBY & LIST simultaneously - Beo4 displays CONFIG? - press LIST until OPTION? is displayed - press GO - Beo4 displays V OPT - press LIST once - Beo4 displays A OPT - press 1 - Beo4 displays CD. No confirmation flash from the BS9000 standby light - no reaction to pressing CD or Radio on the Beo4 or BL1000

10) Press CD on the BS9000 keypad. Speaker relays immediately activate & displays light up - BS9000 activates & moves to the CD and starts playback. Displays both correctly display Volume / Track / Source data.

11) Wonders what could be at fault... Confused

If the above discribed procedure doesn't work, then the ir-PCB might be faulty.

During last year I've had 2 units with the same behaviour/ problem. Another PCB solved the issue.

I have to take some more time to investigate the boards, changed already the caps, but that didn't help.

I assume that you already cleaned the ir eye's?

Hi Beobuddy

Thanks for the reply.

Where are the IR receivers located and what would be the suggested method for cleaning?

Many thanks

Ahh - I located the IR receiver. The eye shaped IR filter is perfectly clean. Could it be dust on the actual IR receiver diodes - or could the board be at fault?

I wondered if it may be the PL cables - but then I guess it wouldn't function using the manual keypad if that were the case...

Thanks

Hi,

That is unlikely, as the yellow wire in the Powerlink cable would need to be missing or broken for the 9000 to go into Option 0.  However, the absence of this wire would mean that the speakers wouldn't switch on.

However, if you want to try replacement cables to see if this does improve the situation, I'm happy to offer these with a 60 day money-back guarantee (ie. if you decide not to keep them, just post them back in good condition within 60 days for a full refund of the purchase price).  Here is the link to the fully-wired Powerlink mk.2 cables that you need for these speakers:-

As Steve suggests, without the proper cable the speakers wouldn\t start up and display any info. So, that's not the cause.

I hardly can imagine that the reception of ir is that worse blocked, but to eliminate the reception of ir, just check.

2 pictures where the ir-eyes are located. The second picture shows the the ir-eyes inside. These are often dirty when the BS9000 is mounted vertically.

Replacing the board at that side means dismantling of the alu plate from it's plastic body. A rather time consuming job as the sledge slides through the bracket mounted on/beneath the alu plate.

Most user uses the BS9000 with a Beovision. Then the commands comes via ML from the BV as the speakers are attached to the BV then.

Thank you Beobuddy for your detailed reply!

I have looked again at the IR receiver PCB located by the CD platter - and it looks fairly clean even though it is quite hidden. I wasn't aware of the IR receiving diode by the standby button. So I tried again with both remotes pointing directly toward it. Still no response.

I guess it's looking more & more likely the PCB is faulty Sad

Despite the fact that parts hardly available are for the mk1, the ir PCB from the mk3 is slightly different, but fits perfectly.

The small ir-PCB doesn't cost much. Labour will be a bit more. can be done within 1-2 hours if the technician keeps the sledge in the first position to provide enough space the change the PCB.

Thanks Beobuddy

I wonder what the chances are of finding a used PCB14 from a BS9000 that is being broken for spares... Any idea of the cost of a new PCB14?

How difficult a job is it? I am an engineer and have worked on many electronic devices over the years Smile

Thanks again

Before trying to find another PCB, I`d try to activate the BS9000 and change the option setting by using a Powerlink dummy plug.

Disconnect your BL5000 (you are talking about BL5000 panel speakers from the 80s with orange display?), get 7 pin DIN plug, solder a bridge between PIN 4 (5V) and PIN 2 (ground). Plug the dummy into one of the Powerlink sockets, reconnect your BS9000 to the mains, wait a minute and try to set the system to A.OPT 1.

I`m not sure if this helps, but maybe worth a try. BL5000s are a bit special. They are not be activated by PIN 4, but by PIN 1. PIN 4 is for speaker mute.

BS9000 uses PIN 4 to check if Beolabs are connected.

Should be possible to test test this. Just press the mute button when the BS is active - BL5000 should turn to standby mode...(?)

You will find detailed info on the beotech site - wiring/powerlink.

Hope this helps...

Stefan

Hi Stefan

Thanks for the reply.

I'm wondering if this is turning into a Workbench thread!

I was halfway through dismantling the BS9000 when your post came in Wink. A fairly logical procedure following the instructions in the service manual - I was about to remove top plate.

OK - in excitement I replaced everything. I opened one of the PL DIN connectors & shorted out pins 2 & 4 (Yellow & Signal Ground) & checked for continuity.

Reconnected just this PL lead - plugged the BS9000 into the mains and switched on the via the rear red pushbutton. Waited a minute - then tried again first with the BL1000 SOUND - 1 - STORE. No confirmation flash from the standby LED Sad

I tried also with the Beo4 as above - again nothing.

Before I reassemble the DIN connector - I measured the voltage from pin 4 to ground whilst the BS9000 is in standby which was 1.25v - is that acceptable?

OK - so I hooked up the BL5000 speakers (yes the ones from the late '80s with amber displays). Popped in a CD (death metal would have been appropriate under the circumstances) & powered up. Pressed CD on the manual keypad - and everything springs into life and CD playback begins. When I press MUTE on the BS9000 keypad - the sound quickly fades to mute - but the BL5000 displays remain lit with data & no relays activate in the speakers. Pressing MUTE again quickly fades the music back.

This is strange. Voltage should be <0,5V when off, and >2,5V when on. PIN 1 is for Powerlink on and PIN 4 for speaker on/off.

This is for older Beolabs like BL5000, Penta... Now they use PIN 4 for Powerlink on, and I thought, your BS9000 is wired this way (my BS9000 is, but it`s an MKIII...)

You will find this info on beotech site (scroll down)

No, it's not. It's a sensing mechanism which provides that low voltage.

With the latest mk3 penta's, pin 1 isn't used anymore. Pin 1 and 4 are connected internally in the penta. But as already mentioned by TS, the set works fine. Only ir doesn't work.

BTW. By shortening pin 2 an 4 at the BS9000 powerlink, the BS9000 starts in option 1. No futher option programming is needed.

Don't search for a used pcb, just order a new one.

Thank you guys

Yes the system works perfectly  - just no IR after all these tests etc.

I will look into the pricing on Monday. Should I just go to my local B&O dealer - or to B&O direct?

I will sit down for when they give me the price Big Smile

OK guys - the PCB arrived today. I installed it - then with some hesitation I pressed SOUND - 1 - STORE on the BL1000 - and the standby LED blinked - HOORAH!!! I then pressed RADIO on the BL1000 and it sprung into life Big Smile

So it was the PCB after all.

Now - I have another problem with the test modes - that is for another thread I feel.

Thanks to all you guys for helping with this.

Service manual:

1. Glass lid

2. Left aluminium plate

3. Release of sledge

4. Cover for chassis top plate

5. Chassis top plate

PCB14 IR Receiver:

- Carry out points 1 to 5.

- Remove 35P53, power supply for sledge motor, and 26P96.

- Remove the screws for the top plate (C, D, E) (see under point 10), lift the top plate carefully (approx. 2 cm), and carefully pull the top plate a little to the right.

- Remove two screws for PCB14 and lift off the PCB.

If IR does not work probably C9 lost the capacity. I had to adjust the 455kHz L1 and L2 filters several times because they were not tuned.
