Hi friends,

After been using the avant for many months now my biggest annoyance with it is the change of speaker group on change of source - and change of stand position when changing to an audio source from video source or vice versa.

I've asked B&O to include a setting for allowing the user to set up sources so that they don't change from the current speaker group or stand position.

For example, if I turn my tv on at night and select the internal speakers, then I won't like it if all speakers are turned on when I change source (for example due to commercials or just moving to watch something else). Same goes for the stand position. Why does it need to change?

I think this should be up to the user. If you want it to always change then that's ok but I want it to stay as I want it.

B&O seems to be reluctant to add this feature, I've asked for it but just gotten a standard reply more or less.

So I wonder, what do you think?

Could you suggest a solution, a way to achieve this?

How can the tv know, that you want it to react differently late in the evening than at daytime?

Do I understand you right? You want the tv to keep the speakers/stand settings of the source that you start using, even if you change to another source (with different default settings) afterwards?

Yes, of course. Well. I did not mean that t should behave differently depending on the time of day but like this.

When you set up a source, for example a Apple TV to HDMi 1. The TV will ask if you want to use a puc, which picture mode, sound mode and so forth. The feature I want would be possible if a selection called follow or bypass (or something like that) was available.

That way the TV would always let sources follow the last source's modes if you would like it to. Very simple actually.

Aha - a function called 'Follow settings of last used source'!

Could make sense  - but would kind of suspend the usability to define different setting for different sources (e.g. a speaker group/2.1 speakers for Spotify - or a speaker group/5.1 speakers for Bluray viewing).

And what would be the initial default settings, if you by every source make 'Follow settings of last used source' as your prefered setting Confused

Exactly. Well, yes it would but it would be up to the user to select per source if he/she wants the source to change source or just follow.

On BeoRemote one you always start the TV with a preferred source so it would follow that one I guess. Or possibly you could say that the TV always starts to a certain group or something. It could be solved in many ways. As long as I don't have to hear my speakers turn on and off all the time I'm happy.

And before anyone says I can disable power saving for sound - no that is not better because then all speakers is always powered on no matter if they play sound or not.

You'd have to define the settings of at least one source (the tv-tuner?) - and you would have to start every session with 'TV'.

If you define every source on the Avant as 'Follow last', they would not know, what to follow, when you turn on the Avant!

Why not just give all sources the same settings (in preferences) - then there would be no problems.

You then could manually change the speakers group, if you want to - (of course you would have to make some groups first!).

Sorry - if you already have written that elsewhere in another thread - but I do have to ask:

Did you make the initial settings of the Avant yourself, or did your dealer do that?

If I did just give all sources the same setting how would that help? If I want to use my BL9s one day and it switches back to the preset choice anyway then what's the use? I have different preference different days.

I simply want to turn on the TV. Let the current speaker group be chosen by the TV. Then I override it (list - sound - 2 for example).

And then when I switch source it will follow. Sound mode 2 with the next source.

Do you understand?

Now the TV will boot with all speakers (my default on all sources for now.) then I maybe change to internal speakers only. And when I change source it will turn all speakers on again. And I will have to press list and chose my internal speakers only again.

And then I change source after commercial is over and I will have to do the whole procedure again.

So annoying.

Yes, why not!

I just wanted to be sure - a lot of people live with the sometimes sparse first time settings of the installer.

I must admit, that I am still struggling a bit to understand what you are at - I am (some times) not the brightest guy in town Embarrassed

I'd like to read other peoples understanding of it - maybe that brings a light into my understanding.

I did read your command - dear Geoff - but that (of course) did not make 'the problem' clearer to me.

After all it is more important, that Geoff understood it - and that it can be adressed in Struer.

Yes - thumbs up Was thinking the same as Michael when using the Headphones speaker group. Change the source, and the selected speaker group won't stick.

I like setting up things myself, but yes most B&O installations are probably made by an installer and almost never changed by the client unfortunately.

You did understand the point of my question so don't feel stupid :). I am a geek, so I love setting things up and trying to find new and interesting solutions to almost everything.

I thought a bit more about what I want and for example. Lets say you choose a certain sound mode per group. That is fine. But if you do one override then they should stick to that and not change - since you´ve made an active change the TV should notice that (if you chose). Or perhaps press list - sound 2 2 (sound mode 2 twice for it to stick, instead of just temporary for the chosen source).

As I said before, it could be made possible in many different ways. Whichever would feel easiest and most familiar with the B&O design.

I now have my sources changed to use the built-in speakers as default for the TV-TUNER because I didn't want it to turn on all speakers all the time. Anyway, when I turn the TV on it now turns all speakers on and quickly turn them off again :D.

Guess it is because when I first set the TV up it made a sound mode called TV (which has all speakers in it) so I had to make one for the internal speakers only myself.

Turning the TV on probably makes it use the TV-profile first and then turn to the start-up source´s mode. So now, turning on my TV makes all my speakers click two times in a row. Even more annoying :D.

This sounds weird to me. Could you email me with a little more info about your system? i.e. what remote control are you using? Are you using the My Buttons to turn on the TV?

Thanks

Yes, to me too. I use a BeoRemote One and not the my buttons. I noticed it yesterday when I got home and pressed "TV" on the remote. Then the TV turned on, turned all speakers on and then turned them off again. Didn't watch the set but heard it. Will try it again when I come home next time.

I'm a bit annoyed about _having_ to choose a speaker group per source. It feels like my favorite restaurant would start charging me for a side dish I don't want because the management suggested that all dishes must come with a side dish. Big Smile

Powerlink all around!

I am using RJ45 to DIN-adapters with PL cables (the ones with triangles) for my BL9 and older thin PL´s for BL8000. Perhaps the adaptors make my BL9 buss louder than necessary? I first tried thick RJ45-to PL-cables but they made my BL9 buss even more. (Just a side question :-) )

Hi,

Thanks for the info regarding the double-click. I've hijacked someone else's setup this afternoon and duplicated the problem. It'll get reported to the appropriate people.

I wonder if anything is happening or if I am the only one who is bothered by speakers turning on and off all the time. Really thinking of selling my avant, getting a new av-processor and just managing it myself. I don't like having to go to list - sound - press a number or going trough the menus for every single source all the time.

(I do like my avant but I dont like software that bothers me Big Smile)

Hi Michael.

I’m not sure if I fully understand the predicament.

There is one speaker stand setting they made for me for audio and one for video.  But I suppose you could just make the setting the same for both as default and then it won’t move on change of source.

You could then make additional stand options and change it when you feel like it.

My TV sources are all defaulted to “TV” mode whereby its just the TV speaker as L, C, R.  This is Foxtel, Apple TV and PS4.

If i want 5.1 sound, I press LIST, Speaker, then i press Right arrow and scroll through, rather than LIST Speaker and scrolling and select.

The speakers don’t turn off an on all the time.  When I power the TV all the speakers light up green, but they don’t have sound come out of them until I change the speaker group to movie.

These settings were done by the installers through the dealer.

My BL3s are plugged in with Receiver 1.

I use the My Buttons, but not all the time to power on the TV, but most times.

If i changed source to radio, the stand moves to point toward my radio listening chair and I can change the speaker group to the 3rd (manually) to Music, if i want to just use the BL3s as FL and FR.

These are my findings.

Hi Michael

I´ll make a try to explain it more throughly.

Stand position:
It is true that I can let both audio and video position be the same, which I also have done to avoid the issue to some extent - meaning, when I don't turn the stand at all.

For example: If I look at TV, turn the stand to for example a preset or manual position and then switch to Apple TV - the stand won't move. BUT if I instead choose to play some web radio during TV-commercials - the stand WILL move. And when a few minutes has passed and I go back to TV, the stand will move again - meaning that the stand position I chose from the beginning is lost and I will have to chose it again or manually move it to where I want it.

Solution: Make it possible to not have the stand change between audio and video sources (as is the case when changing sources in one of the categories).

Speaker group change:
If you have speakers connected with cables the preset setting is that energy savings is on for speakers. This means that speakers that is not used will be turned off to save power (and not make any noise), which is good. If you have wireless speakers they have to be on since wisa can't do stand by for some strange reason.

I don't want to go around the issue by having to have all speakers on all the time. I want the possibility to let the currently chosen speaker group follow when I change source. (As the stand does as long as you stay in video/audio).

I find it quite odd that B&O makes so unlogical choices here. You are forced to select a speaker group per source, whereas you are not forced to set a stand position per source. But you are forced to set a stand position for audio and video sources - that will go into action when you switch from audio/video to the other kind.

Solution: Make it possible to not have to chose a specific sound group per source if you don't want that.

What I want is simply to be able to disable the forced change of speaker group while changing source and the change of stand position upon changing from video to audio or the other way around. If I want to have the system change speaker group/stand then I would chose that actively. Otherwise I'd prefer that the system doesn't do anything more than change the source as per my instructions.

Having to fiddle with List - sound / stand and the positions is messy and takes time. I want to relax when I watch TV. I don't want to set up two or three MyButtons to go around a strangely designed software either - I'd prefer to use those buttons for more specific things. (I use one to dim my lights for example).

Extra request :D
Another good thing when I think of it would be if the TV could display which sound mode it has chosen for the current program according to EPG. (The built in TV-Tuner uses EPG data to chose a sound mode that it thinks will match the program. Sometimes I find the sound weak (it thought eurovision song contest was "DRAMA") and then I have to change it myself, but if it would display that it changed the sound mode it would make me realize it quicker so I can override it manually.)

Okay, interesting thread and having an Avant myself I have this input:

Why not make different groups/Names in the "stand" setting, not turning the tv BUT only choose a different sound setting and speaker choice?

I think you can create 9 different setup or you could use the "my buttons" option.

In my setup there is 4 different "stand" names, each with different stand and/or speaker setup along with "my buttons", where I choose between different stand position, speakers and source.

Maybe I'm getting you wrong (could be possible, laugh) but can you see what I mean..?

BeoFantast:

Okay, interesting thread and having an Avant myself I have this input:

Why not make different groups/Names in the "stand" setting, not turning the tv BUT only choose a different sound setting and speaker choice?

I think you can create 9 different setup or you could use the "my buttons" option.

In my setup there is 4 different "stand" names, each with different stand and/or speaker setup along with "my buttons", where I choose between different stand position, speakers and source.

Maybe I'm getting you wrong (could be possible, laugh) but can you see what I mean..?

1. You have to have a AUDIO stand position. And a VIDEO stand position. Going from a VIDEO source to AUDIO will make the TV move. If I select another stand position when I am on VIDEO it _will_ change again to the default AUDIO position.

2. I have three mybuttons, and I use one for LIGHT. I don't have enough my buttons to walk around a strange software design.

3. I see what you mean, but the problem is that the TV demands a default position for AUDIO / VIDEO / STANDBY. And demands default sound mode PER source. What I want is the possibility to have the TV disregard these demanded choices.

See? Big Smile

Smile Good! Let's hope someone in the development team see's this. For some reason B&O Customer service won't let us talk to their development team. Super bad.
