I'm not sure I've ever paid attention to bass harmonica before, or ever knowingly heard it on any other track/song. It's definitely got a kazoo sound to it, at least on this recording, a really odd instrument sound.
I remember when I was in Chicago once seeing Sugar Blue perform, he's a blues harp player. He had a leather bandoleer only instead of bullets it had pockets for each of his harmonicas, from big bass ones to much smaller ones, but he only really played one "normal" i.e. typical harmonica, I think the rest were mainly for show. Now I wish he'd played a bass one so I'd have a reference!

I'm afraid I'm recovering from the BeoVirus.

Here by coincidence (since I had come across these sisters a month or so ago) is another Civil War collection ... some of the same songs, but possible too jaunty - not enough of the black heart sorrow
final test from my own hard drive ... I followed Geoff's instructions to the letter - 30 degrees offset, slap bang in the middle, ears at acoustic lens height, close the eyes and see if I can follow his mental map ...

I will say, that for the first time I could hear towards the end someone with a gravel voice like mine humming ... no it wasn't an echo of me ! just a subtlety I had not isolated before Now back to Geoff's BL20 Spotify playlist
Well, I got to listen to The Boxer on the BL9s at a fairly high volume last night, no distortion, but they don't bring out just how odd the bass harmonica sounds as the headphones do. Could be the BL20 is voiced to show more "detail" i.e. a bit more forward in the upper mids/lower treble and might show up the "blaat" I heard on the headphones for that damned harmonica. I did notice on the BL9s lots of what I'd consider distortion in the mix but primarily on the vocal tracks, when they get loud and add additional voices the tracts get very congested and compressed sounding. This was streamed in Apple Lossless from my laptop via AirPlay to my Playmaker, then thru the A.Tape input on the BL9000 and to the BL9s.
Not the best mix of any recording I've heard, in fact some pop music of not many years later are far superior. One thing I noticed in my listening around my collection last night is that the BL9s are perfectly capable of showing the differences in recording quality, bad recordings sound bad, good ones sound good, etc. They don't hide flaws in the source material.

Well, I guess "better" can be relative! Maybe the download you had was corrupted? I listened to my rip and Spotify highest bit rate both on the BL9s, a Spotify high bit rate on the phones. I couldn't tell any difference between the two, the cut has enough distortion and noise of its own to mask any algorithmic anomalies I believe.
Well, shute... Now I'm going to have to listen to Boxer tonight on my BL20 and then on the BL9 -- thanks for the homework

jjcox: jjcox: Oh crap, I just ordered a set of BL20's... . I'll let you all know how they compare to the 2003 BL6000's & BL11 when they're nicely settled in my home. ETA is March 24! Ok, this weekend I cancelled my order. I just needed some more confirmation of the superiority of the BL20's against my current BL6000 & BL11. Well... my dealer was so nice to build me a test setup: he placed the BL20's next to a set of BL6002's with BL11, with a Beosound 3000 as the sound source for both of them. I took about 14 CD's with me, with all kinds of music: Oasis, Duran Duran, Sophie B Hawkins, Simon & Garfunkel, Vivaldi, Michael Jackson, Heather Nova, Guus Meeuwis, etc. I listened to all of them on both the BL6002's & BL11 and on the BL20's. We changed the PowerLink cable every time. For me, the difference was striking in about 90% of the songs. The main difference for me, after this 90 minutes listening-and-changing-connections session, is not even in the higher notes. I thought it would have been there. No, the main difference seems to be on the middle and lower part of the sprectrum and just 'general control' of the sound being reproduced. On the BL20's I heard lower notes that I hadn't heard before. The music was more 'carried' by the lows, which made them much, much easier to listen to. The music is much 'fuller'. And some voices, e.g. Robbie Williams' voice, just sounded completely different. Completely real, is if Robbie was actually sitting on my lap (not that I'd like that, but you get the point). In fact, a comparison to cars comes to mind. If I go 100 km/h, the BL6000's with BL11 feel like I'm doing that in a little Fiat 500. The BL20's feel like I'm doing the same speed, but in a Rolls Royce. It's just so easy and effortless. And no, I've never been in a Rolls. But I did order the BL20's again and this time I will definitely not cancel my order!

have you yet to listen to The Boxer ?
I haven't listened to The Boxed yet and I can't find out where to update the signature anymore! (hey, I had a hard time posting those images... )
Hi Elephant,
I finally got to listen to the Boxer (and discovered how I can see the time on the BS3000 :-) ) and I don't hear any distortion at the marks you're giving...
Meanwhile, I'm still completely in love wtih the BL20's .

It's time to create the BL20 owners club

BeoGreg:He bought Beolab 9 and played with the settings on the speakers. That killed them, impossible to get a good sound after that even trying a reset.

Are you in?
Beware, you'd better hurry - only six members allowed (see above) :-))

There is a tv - and there is a BV
BeoGreg:Elephant, your problem with your second hands speakers reminds me a story with a french member (Edouard) a long time ago. He bought Beolab 9 and played with the settings on the speakers. That killed them, impossible to get a good sound after that even trying a reset. He bought Beolab 5 instead. Maybe something whent wrong with your Beolab 20 ? You shouldn't be desappointed compared to 6000's.

Are you sure you don't have that backwards? There is no "reset" on the BL9, it's a three position switch that selects from three preset equalization curves, there's nothing that should have messed up the sound and not been able to get back to baseline unless something broke inside the speaker. Now, I've heard that BL5s have at times not adapted well to running the room equalization calibration, and there is no way to get them back to their baseline setting short of putting them in the middle of a huge warehouse kind of room and recalibrating. Once you run a room EQ they no longer have the original setting in memory to go back to, but the BL9 is just a three position switch.

Could the individual have messed with the two calibration / adjustment dials on the back of the BL9's which should never be touched? Could that be what caused what was called the "reset"?

Ah, that sounds possible. I seem to remember some talk about that in an old thread some time ago now that you mention it. I doubt you could get back to where you start without pulling the drivers and looking at the calibration numbers on them and doing the factory/service procedure for replacing a driver.
BeoGreg:Member name was EdouardG or similar (can't find it with search function). Discussion was back when BV10 came out (he bought a BV 10-40 orange fret). I think he played with some switches on the back of the speakers resulting on a bad sound.
