HI everyone,

I currently have a Beomaster 3500 coupled with a pair of Redline 60.2 speakers. While the sound is no doubt excellent from this setup, the Redlines take quite a bit of space in the room and I am contemplating the idea of replacing them with the recent S8 set from beoplay.

Question #1: will it work? My guess is that, with the proper Powerlink <=> RJ cable, it should connect well. Am I right here? Am I correct in thinking that ONE such cable is enough to power both channels?

Question #2 (more subjective) in case the answer to #1 is yes: does it make sense on the 'sound quality' side? I appreciate that the S8 is (just) 25 years more recent that the Redlines, and that Active speakers have made their way into the B&O line up. I also know that they are more powerful than the 55 w amplifier inside the Beomaster. Unfortunately, I cannot do a blind test ... Alternatively, what about Beolab 4000?

Please let me know about your thoughts/experience here. Also, I have just purchased a seemingly 'near mint' Beosystem 4500 (with the BM4500, the CD4500 and the vinyle Beogram) that will replace the BM3500. The system should be delivered within 4 weeks, and I will post impressions and pictures.

Regards from Paris,

Thierry

Hi Thierry,

I think I'd stick to the BL4000's.  They are discrete and can be well hidden and produce some of the best sound from BL speakers.  Bass is excellent if properly placed and they will handle the BM4500 easily.  The 4500 system is excellent - well done on a good choice of vintage.

Dave.

Thanks Dave,

I am, myself, a vintage system, not near mint but a good choice according to my wife Big Smile

Personnally I don't care whether the BSys4500 is a 'vintage system' or not.

It is my (still) working audiomaster, that feeds the ML (tv and speakers) and a MCL2A-system.

To me it is my 'today system' - and does what I need!

Of course you can use the S8 with the 4500.

You will need an adapter cable from PL/Din to PL/RJ45 - no big deal.

And you will have to run speakers cables from the sub to the satelites - mind that.

Whether you prefer the S8 or the BL4000 (or any other pair of BeoLab's) is up to your (and your wife's) personal taste and needs.

From a technical/connection point of view the S8 is as good as any other BL.

There is a tv - and there is a BV

Many thanks for this confirmation. We will now, as suggested, concentrate on selecting our preferred speaker, knowing that the 'plumbing' is not an issue anymore.

I am impatient to receive the 4500 system now ... and to be honest, probably due to my age and the fact that I had my first B&O system (1600) in 1981, I just see it as contemporary: those before are 'vintage' and those after are 'modern'. How everyone has their appreciation and reference points only makes the forum exchanges richer.

Next post will be on the 'flash you BO system' thread !
