Good evening everyone!

My name is Gianluca and I'm new of this forum. It's a pleasure being here :)

I've just bought a Beogram 4000.. wow guys, first time I looked at it I felt in love!

It's used and the video made by the seller demonstrated all was fine.. but once arrived in my home I faced one issue (maybe due to transportation)..

Let me recap my doubts :)

 -    is it normal that when I keep pressed the 33 rpm button the plate engine runs and light is turned on while if I keep pressed the 45 rpm one nothing happens?

 -    if I push the left button of the control panel to move the arm, the deeper I push, the faster it goes. Not the same for the right button. It always runs slowly. should they behave the same?

 -    Problem: when I turn the turntable one (33 rom round one), selection is automatically set on 33 rpm, arms start moving but it doesn't stop at the beginning of the round, arms go straight to the middle of the round (like if I put a 45 rpm) and starts playing. at this time selection moves from 33 to 45 automatically.

Here in Turin maybe there is some place to restore it but you know, I'm an engineer and I would like to save money too so it would be the best if I could succeed repairing by myself :)

Thanks for all the help you can provide!

See you guys :)

Welcome! Smile It is a pleasure having you!

- is it normal that when I keep pressed the 33 rpm button the plate engine runs and light is turned on while if I keep pressed the 45 rpm one nothing happens

Yes quite normal.

- if I push the left button of the control panel to move the arm, the deeper I push, the faster it goes. Not the same for the right button. It always runs slowly. should they behave the same?

Yes they should. Sometimes the plastic cap of the micro-switch is worn. I added a spacer to restore normal function. You will understand when you open the thing.

Are you saying that the arm goes down when there is no record on the platter? This is not normal. That it should switch to 45 RPM is quite alright, but if no disc is detected it should continue its way through the platter, reach its end stop and go back before switching itself off.

See section 4 of the flowchart in the SM.

Here in Turin maybe there is some place to restore it but you know, I'm an engineer and I would like to save money too so it would be the best if I could succeed repairing by myself :)

Good luck! I'm sure you will manage that. But please post plenty of pictures! We love them Smile

The service manual is an absolute must-have, and the fault finding section flowchart will tell you precisely what's wrong and what to do.

Good morning Jacques,

thanks for your quick reply :)

for the second point I'll do some test.. it could be also the way I assembled the white pulley. The shipping was so bad that I found the pulley on the deck and not fixed to the arm! so I reassembled it putting in the middle a little bearing made by some kind of cloth (I found it somewhere into the box) so maybe this could be a problem for the speed. I'll do a test of the engine only :) If someone could provide some image of how the white pully is assembled and if there is some bearing in the middle it could really help.

about the third point I'll explain better:

 -    if I pute the plate but no record on, the arm goes to the end and comes back automatically so it's working because it's recognizing that there is no record.

 -    if I put the 12" record on, the sensor should recognize it and start from the beginning when i push the on button. instead the arm dont' start playing from the beginning but it goes directly to the middle of the record and it starts playing from there. like if I put a 7" record on. I'll put a video on youtube and send you the link as soon as possible :) maybe the problem (but I don't know) could be that I found another little electrical component disassebled.. here the pictures.

They were too big to put them here directly. I will send more detailed pictures in the we! Also of the whole Beogram ;)

Thanks again!

You can, and you should post pictures here, no problem (I like 1500 dpi). It is a little frustrating to have to go to some other website to see the pictures. Truth is, many won't even bother looking at all...  You have to re-size them, that's all.

The felt washer that you found is inserted between the bracket which supports the nylon worm-screw bearing plate and the pulley itself. I guess this is precisely what you did, so well done.

The transistor is the wrong way around, we cannot see what it is!

Your issue could be many things... like a bad detector bulb (first thing to verify), a bad transistor (there are at least three or four here), a faulty switch, a bad IC (rare)...

You really need to find the service manual (it is available here, Peter's scan is outstanding, but you have to be a fully registered member, at least silver, to be able to download it) because you will need the diagrams and the flowchart.

Thanks for the suggestion Jacques,

next time I'll post here directly the pictures, in this case I was not able to resize them :P

Actually I have the service manuals, I just need to undersatand where the transistor goes :)

I will send the detailed picture of it and how the pulley is assembled.

buy for now!

Gianluca

P.S. in case the problem is the detector bulb, how can i verify its functionality?

It could be fried - no light - or too dim (blackened bulb).

Good morning Jacques! Hoping you had a good we :)

for the detector bulb you mean the one inside the black box under the pickup arm?

About the speed you were right! I tried and it must be the button, I'll put some thickness or something similar :)

About the pictures, here they are :)

Thanks again,

Hi,

You have to push the pulley further up the screw. There's too much play; the screw's shoulder should be right against the white plastic.

The detector arm is the one parallel to the tonearm. There is a bulb at its extremity, whose purpose is to sense the platter ribs. It also lights up the B&O logo !

About the BC547, it was probably forgotten here!

Good morning Jacques!

How are you? :)

I have a good news: the sound is coming out so the Beogram is working more or less!

The only problem is still the 12 inches record recognizment.. so you're saying that it's not the transistor? I hope it's just an additional piece forgotten here as you're saying.. the bulb seems fine.. I mean the light is there.

I'll try to have a look at the technical scheme in order to understand where the logic is failing.

Thanks again for your helpfulness :)

C y soon!

Hi Gianluca,

I'm fine, thanks!

Yes, do read that flow chart first.

Good morning Jacques,

I've had a look at the chart.. but it's more complicated than what I thought... I should have something to check voltage and understand all the points into the electrical components.. after some tentative and tests I checked that after pushing on ON button, the arm always stopped and start playing from the moment on which the contact touched the red button

We have the two V contacts in the picture above: when the second one (the one hidden on the right under the red plastic) touches the hidden red button the arm stopped.

So to make it stop at the beginning of 12 inch record, I've just folded a little bit more the first contact, the one visible, and now it's stopping! and the arm lower corectly!

The problem now (and I really don't know why..) after the arm lower the slide engine doens't run and the slide doesn't move... so the arm does not go on.. while the main platter engine runs as usual.

Have you ever raised this issue?

Thanks again!

It might get stuck because of what you did with the leaf spring. Usually the red caps do wear, but it required a very little draw to the leaf springs to compensate for that.

When it's stuck, does he carriage motor get voltage?
