Hello all,

i am new to this forum and have a question. As i bought a pair of B&O Type K speakers, i now would like to buy a Beocenter 4600 from a friend. Could maybe somebody confirm me, that those will fit together? As i would only need a turntable ... any other ideas? Sorry for my english ;-)

Thanks in advance

Thomas

They would work of course but would be a fairly odd match.

Type K speakers were early 60's speakers which have a very vintage sound to them, whereas your Beocenter 4600 is from the mid 70s where the speakers improved quite a lot.

Some Beovox S45s or something similar would be much more suitable!

The Type K speakers are pretty rare however so I would keep hold of them! If you wanted a period amplifier you would be looking at a 608 or 610 Hi-Fi Stereo Amplifier or similar really!

Thank you Ben. It seems, that it would be better, to get some newer speakers. Some minutes ago my friend told me, that he is also selling a pair of Beovox 800 speakers. Also from 60´s what i found on the internet. But ... he want´s 40,- Euros for them. A bargain?

The older speakers were really made for the amplifiers of the time which were usually valve driven and relatively low powered. Once transistors were the norm, the speakers were designed to work with these instead. A lot of B&O speakers were designed around the system and it makes sense to get the right ones as they are often balanced to maximise the sound quality. S30s or S45s are ideally suited or S75s if you want a bigger speaker with more bass impact.

Thanks Peter. As i already have those lovely type K speakers ... which suitable amplifier and turntable would you recommend?

I have to say, that this is the first time i got in contact with B&O .. so i do not know anything. except that i like the design.

Peter is correct. It is best to go with the matching speakers of the time.

As I mentioned above you'd be after a valve amplifier ideally, 610 or 608 Hi-Fi Stereo Amplifier would be ideal.

Once I heard the Type K speakers and they were excelent! Peter and Ben are right, they are older and match better the old tube amps but I am sure they would sound very good with Beocenter 4600 too. If you already have it, try this setup for few days and than decide if it is good enough for you.

If you only need turntable you could try to find Beogram 1500 (older one, Type 5208). It has integrated amplifier and in my opinion it would match very good as well opticaly as with power output the Type K speakers. In this case you do not need an extra device (amp).

The only problem you will have is the sensitivity - make sure you don't turn the volume up too much. The tweeters on the K are cones and are very directional so you will find there is a definite sweet spot when you set them up. I have BV5000s which are much the same external design but mine are the Mk3s which use dome tweeters and this means they are easier to position. The 608 would be a good choice but you can play anything - just be careful of the volume with transistor amplifiers.

Very true, and good recommendation Theomaster.

Hopefully one day I will find some type K's (once I find the room!). They are a pretty uncommon speaker so do look after them. Let us know how it sounds if you do try it.

Thank you all very much for your help. I´m now thinking about selling the Speakers and invest the money in a later B&O system. What would you say, is a fair price? I found some for approx. €1.500,-!!!! which looks far to expensive for me.

Difficult to value vintage items like that. €1500 is far too expensive though. Are they in good condition? That makes a big difference in terms of price.

The other issue is the size of the speakers. You are unlikely to be able to ship them which again limits the price you will get. Your best bet might be to put them up for auction instead and see how it goes.

They are unusual though so I'm sure a collector would be interested.

I agree with Ben, €1500 is far too optimistic. You can try with any price but if you did not have any inquiry or get some offers, you have to realize that the price is not realistic. This guy is obviously not ready to realize that as he is selling those speakers since long time...

As Ben said, it is almost impossible to pack and ship them safely so probably you can not sell them on Ebay.

Try to find some collectors in your region and get the offers from them.If you get 3 or 4 offers, you will know what the price is.

I don't know what did you pay for them but in my opinion, you can get 200-300€ for them. If the speakers are really nice and you are ready to wait weeks or months for a right collector, you will MAYBE get 500€.

But the right question is: why do you want to sell them actually? The speakers are very good and all you need is a good amplifier. You will be very happy with them, I am sure.

Hi!

I have discovered this combination recently and I truly love it. They were made to work together mind you.

The Beomaster 1000 has a loudness mode at low volume that you can't switch off.

Do tell us what they sound like with the K speakers, but bear in mind that the stylus should be an SP6/7 in good condition!

That would be a good match - the K series were in the same brochure as the white key 1000 (Germanium transistors).

Yup, do go for that! Excellent match, I have an early Beogram 1000 with some Type B speakers and a Beomaster 900M and it is a lovely little set.

With the Type K's I am sure it will sound even better. Let us know how you get on
