Hi All

Can someone please help me on how to wire up the BeoSound 5 Encore to my BeoLab 5's, while retaining the LINE IN connection I have to my Non B&O Amp.

At the moment my setup is as follows:

Onkyo AVR (Pre out)  --> (LINE IN) Beolab 5

I want to utilise the Powerlink cable to connect the BeoSound 5 Encore to the BeoLab 5's. But because my BeoLab 5's are in Option 1, it does not pick up the BeoSound 5 Encore when connected via Powerlink.

BeoLab 5 Options

Option 0 (factory setup): Used if connected to a Bang & Olufsen audio (or video) system.

Option 1: Used if connected to a non-Bang & Olufsen system. You may have a Bang & Olufsen television in the same room, if you wish.

Option 4: Used if connected to a non-Bang & Olufsen system – and you have an extra Bang & Olufsen audio system in the same room.

Now from the above, it would seem that Option 4 would be the one i'm looking for, but it doesn't work in that mode either. The BeoSound 5 Encore only works in Option 0 when connected via Powerlink.

Reason I want to connect the BS5 Encore via Powerlink directly to the speakers, and not go through the amplifier, is because even though I have one of the top Onkyos (PR-SC5509), the sound quality differs massively, even though the BL5's are connected via Pre-Outs.

Any advice would be appreciated as my BS5 Encore is just sitting gathering dust at the moment because of this :(

Thanks

Don't ever try to run two connections at the same time to BL5.

You would need a switch for that - and even though, you would have to change the Option each time, you would change the source.

Why not simply connect the output of the Onkyo (line-out/pre-out connection) to the line-in/Aux-in of the Encore...

...and connect the BL5 with the provided PowerLink cables to the Encore!

There is a tv - and there is a BV

Hi

Great idea. But the reason I didn't connect it like this is because I have BeoLab 3's for the rear, and BeoLab 7 for the centre for a surround setup, and thus need the amplifier to distribute sound to the centre and rears for surround sound content.

If the BeoSystem 4 was out when I bought these speakers I would have bought that. However, I think I will wait for a "4K" version of the BeoSystem 4 to allow me to upgrade my non B&O TV to a 4K compatible TV as well. But who knows how long that will be...

Of course I could skip the BeoSystem 4 completely, and just go for a 4K B&O Avant TV... but pricing is very high. Whistle

Actual non B&O televisions have 4K panels. Therefore it's no good idea to buy a Beosystem 4 nowadays. Beosystem 4 was outdated from the beginning.

The only reason I wanted the BeoSystem 4 was to replace my Onkyo AVR and do the surround processing to all the speakers.

If I get a non B&O 4K TV then I still have to use the sink to AVR and will have the same problem as described in the OP :(

I completely agree with you. I see no point for me to upgrade to a BeoSystem 4 until it supports Dolby Atmos and 4K.

Yes, and I hope B&O is already developing sound systems with Dolby Atmos, they could sell so much more Beolabs.

I'm tired of discussions about 'Deezer or Spotify' and 'Bluetooth or Airplay'. I don't want Beoplay products for the kids, but B&O toys for the 'big boys'!

EXACTLY! I've heard reviews that "Mockingjay" is pretty impressive with Dolby Atmos. I already have 7.2 surround. I would definitely buy more B&O speakers if B&O supported Dolby Atmos.

Since the encore is a standalone system by definition, even adding a BS4 would bring you back to the same problem of jumping through hoops. There isn't a convent way of doing what you are asking with the current equipment.

Ah, you know... A little B&O here, a little there

If it simply means changing the "source" on the BS4, then that's perfectly fine! I just want a more convenient way of using the BS5 encore in my current setup, without changing the "option" of the BeoLab 5's each time..

Thanks

Reading the comments above and with your current equipment it sounds like you need to compromise on convenience or quality, as it's clear it's not possible to do both without new toys.

So with no new kit, the convenient thing would be encore to amp to speakers, but as you say may not give quite the same quality (although I'd be surprised if much different), or go the sound quality approach but means you have to switch it over each time.

Get yourself an Avant!  Sorted!!

I've covered the sound quality issue difference in an older thread here - http://archivedforum2.beoworld.org/forums/p/9060/79747.aspx

Avant would be perfect, but not the best, financially.

If I got the amp, I think I could go:

Encore directly to BL5 speakers (The BeoLab 5 speakers have 2 Powerlink inputs)

And the BeoSystem 4 Amp to the BL5 speakers, BL3 rears, and BL 7-2 center, all via Powerlink.

But then i'd be unable to upgrade my TV to 4K using the BeoSystem 4...

So Avant is probably the best choice in this instance for best sound quality etc..

Hmmm..
