Besides holding the "status" button down, is there a way to have the display stay on the MCP 5500 while the system is in use?  I realize that would drain the batteries, but I recently customized my MCP to accept a 6V DC adapter.

The short answer would be no.
The longer answer would be that of course it would be possible to redesign the power control circuitry in the MCP.

Also, the rate at which this would drain the batteries would be pretty extreme!
They do eat batteries enough as it is.
