I've had my Beolab/Beomaster 5000 for a couple of years and used it pretty much every other day. Recently though (the last few months), when I've switched the amp on, I've noticed a faint acrid burning smell from the right hand side of the Beolab. In addition to this the power light sometimes doesn't come on immediately but will do after a few minutes.

Today I turned it on and noticed visible wisps of smoke from the same side and was slightly alarmed!

Everything else seems fine and it sounds great but can anyone suggest what the issue might be?

Thanks

David

Mmm... Leaking caps?

Please do not use it any more, because you can potentially do further damage to it. Have it fixed for you. Now you could send it to Frede at beolab.dk and have it restored -nay, renovated! - completely.

Certainly a component burning out so as has been said - please don't use it anymore or it will get worse and potentially flammable!

I had mine restored by Frede at Classic Audio and haven't looked back - it's better than new and the sound is sublime from all sources.

I have the same thing on my Beolab 5000 so it seems to be a fairly common fault. I have seen it on another one before as well with continous use. Not surprising giving the age of the components really.

Best advice, get it serviced.

Decided to open it up and found this Crying

Looks like the smell was the melting plastic which has pretty much fused itself onto the component below. Bobbins Sad

I've taken your advice chartz & Dave and have temporarily retired it from service to save any further damage.

Dave, with regards to Fredde at Classic Audio, would you mind if I asked how much your restoration cost? (please PM me if you want to be discreet). I'd love to have it restored to better than new, however, I've looked on his site but can't find a price list as such!

Thanks

David

I too had my 5000 system restored by Frede - best money I have ever spent. Got a free supper, excellent company and a walk on his beach thrown in! He is one of the kindest and friendliest men I know associated with B&O and lives very close to Struer. I honestly cannot remember what I paid but it simply wasn't enough enough compared to the pleasure I have got from my system since. The pieces he made for me would be the very last pieces of B&O I would ever sell. I intend to leave them to my daughter. She will probably sell them!! Big Smile

Hi David,

He can't publish costs as it's different for every one he does due to the differing levels of work needed.  As has been said, the best money I've ever spent.

Approx 6,000 Danish crowns which is approx £590 or 800 € at today's rates.  Don't think of it as a 'cost', it's an investment and you will not be sorry. Mine will outlive me!

You need to contact him and he'll go through the process.  He'll inspect it, then give you a final quote.  The folder you get and the book on your restoration is amazing too.  I suspect my system has possibly increased in value should I wish to sell it due to the quality of the restoration.

Dave.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for that - as you say an investment for the future! I always wanted a 5000 system from the first time I saw one in my dad's old B&O brochures - he ended up buying a Beolit 400 the more portable (cheaper Big Smile ) option!

I'd never part with mine now and like Peter intend to leave it to the next generation, however, my son and daughter will have to fight it out over who gets it!

I'll contact Fredde and go from there.

Thanks all.

David
