Hi
I have a pair old s45 2 speakers .
Beautiful sound but one of the speakers has developed a low level distortion sound that seems to be coming from the woofer.
Any ideas what this might be ?
Would be extremely grateful for any advise
Many thanks
David
The magnet could be slipping ? Known fault but usually locks the speaker. Is fixable! Or could be the crossover - also fixable!!

I have a pair of S45-2's which had a distortion issue with one of the phase links (the 3" cone in the middle). The distortion was only present at medium to high volume levels. Changing the capacitors in the crossovers fixed my problem. That was 5+ years ago and the problem has not returned.
Peter brings up a very good point. According to the prevailing wisdom here, the S45-2 woofer magnets will slip eventually. Whether this is the cause of your current problem or not, you must take the time to do some preventive maintenance on the woofers to prevent this.
Lots of good threads on here about this issue.
Thanks very much for your replys
That sounds like what might be happening.
Apologies for being completely ignorant about this but what capacitors would you advise replacing and can i do this with very basic soldering skills?
Thanks
It could also be a lose spider or voicecoil in the woofer. I've seen this a few times with the Peerless drivers.Swap the woofers and see if the problem follows or remains.

Yes. (Soldering I'm sure would be preferred, but you actually don't have to.) It's a piece of cake.
But first follow Martin's (Dillen's) advice to verify it's the driver and not the crossover.
Thanks will follow Martins advise ...If that doesnt work do you know what capacitors are needed ?
Cheers

Yes, I think I have that info back at the house (I'm at work). If not, I can always open my set up.
EDIT to add:
But I'm sure you can buy a kit from Martin. His kits include instructions as well.
Agreed - if you are replacing the capacitors, get the kit and it will last another 30 years!!
Just another follow up question about this.
Although i like the detailed sound of the speakers i have always thought they are very much on the trebly side of things could the sound be affected by old caps possibly?

Yes, that's the main reason we suggest you replace them as the first thing in case of sound problems.
S45.2s are definitely bass light - there is bass there and it is beautifully accurate but the speaker rolls off quite high so it is certainly not a boom box! The S55 is broadly similar. The S75 adds a blousy bass to the mix and in my youth I liked this. I now prefer the more accurate S45!
Hi Martin
Do i buy the kits from you.
Should i pm you to discuss this
I had a pair of S80-2 that came with a Beocenter 9500 I bought. Never did find anything I liked them for and always found them bass light. Gave them away in near perfect condition.
My RL6000s were more pleasing, but I gave those to the same friend. Kept my Powerlink based speakers only. The last speaker of B&O history that I've left to audition is an MS150/Beomaster 8000 combo. I suspect I'd like those much better.
I have had two different pairs of S45's where the back resin have been loose causing the same kind of distortion. Re-gluing the back cured the problems.
