I have an older turntable (b&o beogram 3400) and it has a mmc5000 cartridge. i know i need a phono preamp but some preamp sellers say works with moving coil, moving magnet or works with both,,,,, my question is the mmc5000 considered moving coil or moving magnet, thanks

It is considered as a moving magnet design although the output is approx 50% of a "normal" moving magnet cartridge.
In my opinion, you are best to cosider a pre amp with an adjustable output to compensate for the somewhat lower output from the cartridge. I use a TC770LC available from www.phonopreamps.com with excellent results.
