I am using a BL7.2 as soundbar for my Samsung tv, optical out from the tv, into a Beosound 3000 via optilcal->coax converter.
The sound is perfect...

For a 32 Inch TV a 7-1 will look much better (was offered like this with Beovision 7-32).

Can the Beolab 7 series speakers only be used as center speakers or as full stereo speakers? I've never heard them. I think the Beolab 3500 will - sound wise - only be usable as a sound bar or center speaker for a small room as it has not the best sound for loud action movies. :)

They are full-blown stereo speakers - and can be used as center speakers, if set in the configuration.
Note: the 7-4 is a dedicated center speaker.
The BL3500 could be used, but to set it up as a 'normal' speaker is a bit tricky - and not worth it, imo.
Think of the current prices for the 7 series and go for the 7-1 - you won't regret that.
