My Beomaster 4400, which has been in almost daily use, either by me or, more recently by my partner's son, Michael, has developed a fault in one channel.  Unfortunately, he is living in Sheffield so my natural inclination to take it to Tim would involve an 800 mile round trip for me which I would like to avoid if at all possible.
Michael has made all the more obvious checks that it isn't a source, a speaker or a cable problem and has also checked for possible oxidisation of switches but the left channel is still not working with any source through his S45.2s,  although strangely both channels are fine through headphones.
Anyone any idea what the problem is likely to be and is there anyone in either Sheffield or Manchester willing to take a look at it? Michael works regularly in Manchester and would be able to travel to anywhere on the Sheffield/Manchester axis.
The 4400 is of huge sentimental value.  Six years ago, about a year after I joined Beoworld, Peter very generously gave it to me when I was developing an interest in vintage B&O.  His generosity and the subsequent advice and kindness from others available is a reflection of a real community spirit amongst Beoworld members.
And my continuing enthusiasm has been contagious.    Michael has recently been using my CDX as his expensive SACD player has developed a noise problem.  He was so impressed he bought one!
Any advice or help would be very gratefully received.

Thats unfortunate as its a fantastic radio/amp.

But its of an age and deserves a good tweaking, so send it to Tim for a full make over and you will get another 20/30 years of pleasure.

I had Classic audio do mine and its worth it.

If it works fine through headphones but not through any of the speaker set sockets, I would check the speakers and speaker cables.

Funnily enough, I contacted Frede a few years ago about the possibility of a complete refurbishment but I didn't pursue it as my future suddenly looked uncertain - and it wasn't going to be cheap!

Thanks Martin.

I initially thought that would be the most likely problem once I knew both channels were fine using headphones but Michael assures me that he has swapped around cables and speakers across both sets of speaker sockets and the problem doesn't appear to be the speakers or the cables.

If you decide to get it fixed, I have a Beomaster 6000 quad which I can lend Michael as a substitute!! Lives under the bed at the present!

Peter,

Thank you so much for the offer -,typically generous of you. I'll contact Michael and get back to you ASAP. His father lives in Newcastle so it isn't an infrequent trip for him.

Once again, many thanks.

An update.

It turns out that Martin was right - as usual.

Despite getting reassurances on two occasions that the cables had been checked, it now turns out the problem was in the female DIN socket at the end of the speaker cable that was connected to the l/h speaker. This came to light when connecting up a Beocenter 3500.

Whilst reassured on a number of levels that the problem isn't with the Beomaster, I am sorry to have wasted fellow Beoworlders' time on something so trivial. Thanks to everyone, particularly to Martin for his sage advice and to Peter for his typically generous offer of a loan Beomaster 6000.

So am I!

Even though I am not using it at the moment, it is the one piece I have that I will not part with. Thank you for your interest.
