Check that you got the belts in correctly.Particularly the square belt that runs to the white idler wheel at the edge of the drive.
Can you tell if the motor is slowing down while winding/rewinding ?Without a tape - does the left spool rotate for a second or so when rewind is activated ?
Martin
Hi Martin,
I've visually checked the belts and am sure I've re-fitted them as per instructions.
(I replaced the idler wheel rubbers when I replaced the belts - not sure if this could be related?)
In answer to your questions: the motor seems to be pretty consistent when forwarding/playing and without a tape the left spool does rotate for a bit when pressing rewind.
I've uploaded some video clips to demonstrate:

The hexagonal inner part of the left spool has cracked down its side. This makes it wider, locking the spring loaded triangular (winged) part that is supposed to grip into the tape reels, in its lowest position.
In other words, the spool rotates, but it doesn't grip properly into the tape reel.
The best solution is to replace the broken part but an alternative fix is to simply glue the triangular part to the hexagonal shaft, to sitpermanently in its upper position.
Thanks Martin - brilliant diagnosis!
Exactly as you said - a tiny hairline crack causing all the trouble!
With regards to glueing it will it cause any other issues? I'm thinking of trying to reduce the diameter of the inner collar with 1000 grit wet and dry so it doesn't cause the split to expand. I'll give it a go before glueing as a last resort.
Just go ahead and glue it.The tape reels will fall into place nicely every time.
looks like the belt is on the wrong side
Hi wkw19521,
Pretty sure the belts are correctly fitted - Martin got the diagnosis spot on - a tiny hairline crack in the spring return part of the winder that needed a spot of glue. All working now!
Thanks
Dave
