I am thinking about the other 3 b&o components I acquired with the beomaster 5000. Beocord 5000, beogram CD50 and the beogram 5000. I have no interest in cassettes and not sure about the CD player. Vinyl sounds interesting. How hard and expensive would it be to restore the beogram 5000. I guess I need to test the unit when I get home to see were it stands.

Hi Don,

a shame to break a full system up.  The CD player is quite good.  Not many use cassettes these days.  The BG5000 is also OK and will depend on the cartridge with it.  As for restoration, well, that depends on how it's been looked after so far.  At least it will need cleaning and relubricating.  Apart from that, it may not need anything - with the exception of probably a new/retipped cartridge which will probably be the most expensive bit!

Test them all together and see how things work out.  It looks better as a stacked system.

Dave.

Thanks for reply Dave. I did power up the CD player last month and the tray was acting funny. It would go in then retract again. Seemed to be stuck in that mind set lol. I do have CDs and since you say it's a good one then I will be willing to give it a go. I just finished with the receiver and love it. Had a good time with the recap and other components I changed. My plans were to just use the receiver by itself but I LOVE to tinker so I knew in back of my mind that the other units would get looked at. Any info on the cd symptom I mentioned?

Hi Don,

not quite sure what you mean with the CD drawer?  When you put the CD on the tray and the tray retracts back into the player, what happens then?  do you mean it comes out again, doesn't play?  Can you clarify?

I think the CD has to go in the tray upside down on this one - i.e. with the playing side uppermost/label down.  I assume you know that already?

Dave.

Dave I am currently stuck on a oil&gas platform in the Gulf of Mexico. Weather to bad to fly helicopter to pick me up. Easy money but I miss my workbench...and wife lol. When I make it in I will test the CD player and have a better explanation for you.

I got my Beosystem 5000 about 3 years ago BM 5000 only cleaning, CD50 cleaning new belt, adjustments and motor apart for cleaning and lub, Beocord cleaning and lub. new belts, BG cleaning lub new belt and speed adjustment, I think I changed the trimmers and some caps also. All still working, the BG 5000 everyday.

Thanks for the inspiration Soren! I'm excited about tackling the CD-50! I read a post about Dillen discussing relube the motor. I believe that's something I could tackle as my other hobby is electric RC cars/trucks. Can't wait to get home and get the CD player on the bench! Still stuck offshore due to FOGG.

Finally made it home Wednesday evening. I ordered one of those fancy mini jack to B&O aux in  cables. Didn't realize 25 euros was $41 lol. Oh well the pics of it looked high end. I also installed 4D batteries in master control 5000. Haven't powered it up in several weeks. Well it didn't go well....after just several seconds it displayed battery then shut down. Had to remove batts just to get it back up. The. It would shut down again. Decided to stop by local electronics store and bought 3 axial and 1 radial caps. Just finished installing caps and reflows several bad connections elsewhere. Good news!! It lives and controls receiver perfectly. It even kept time and day after batts were removed for ten minutes. Tried calling original owner about the other s80.2 speaker but no answer. Bummed out about that but still hopeful. Have a good weekend everyone!

Congrats on getting the MCP back up!

I do hope you decide to keep everything together to "complete the set" despite having no interest in cassettes (and Dave erroneously telling you no one has any interest in them). However, if you wish to part with the BC, I know someone who will give it a good home.

Thanks Rich! I did remove the cover from cd-50 and man is it busy in there. Kind of blew my mind because I'm the type person that would want every square inch cleaned and all caps replaced. I'm sure though that when I have the time and a clean bench that I would want to tackle the project. I just let my mind get the better of me. One step and day at a time.  Thanks for your interest and reply! Oh yah the cassett deck....I know if I let it go that one rainy boring weekend I would probably regret it lol...peace

A repair thread and no pictures? Whistle

Remember, photos or it didn't happen! Stick out tongue

Yes, you should always renew caps in MCPs. Battery life will be much better anyway. The last time I changed batteries on mine was two years ago, and it's still working on those!

I didn't have to replace any caps in my CD50. Like Søren, the belt and the motor were the usual culprits for a non-functional device.

Agree with Jacques, pics or it didnt happen. My MCP has 3 years with the Batteries, and new caps.

On my CD50 I did a throughout cleaning and lub. cleaned all plugs and jacks (connectors) with Deoxit, the same with the Beocord, there all failures disappeared after cleaning all the connectors, I had to clean and work the connectors on and off about 3 times. I also used a lot of time cleaning the cassette mech. in detail and then lub. where needed, after cleaning the toneheads check them with a loupe. I have recorded 12 cassettes with my 7" records.

Recording with the Beocord 5000 is a joy, it has all the automatic functions needed, like, it makes a small gap between songs, play next function, it also tells you if recording is possible, and the meters works exactly and so on.And best of all you can buy them cheap.

Pic from one of the first tests, with an old tape

I have yet to meet a working Beocord that didn't play prerecorded tapes well.  The BC4500 is my favorite.

Indeed, post a test report on what you find with the Beogram and plentiful advice will be forthcoming. Providing you have a decent cartridge and drive belt and it hasn't been rattled about by shipping without locking the suspension, there is a good chance of it working and just needing adjustment.

The CD50 has a great reputation when in working order, but you should expect it to need an overhaul to get it playing. If it works, leave it alone and enjoy it.

I realize how dull my thread is without pics. I have plenty cell phone pics. I wish this forum was as easy as tapatalk app (audiokarma) to upload pics. Can someone show a instruction link for posting pics. The only info on the cd-50 I have is, I powered it up Friday and something was spinning and squeaking. The tray was out a little and of course the door was open. Tray was not moving. I know it's not much but it's all I have right now. Won't have much time to troubleshoot it this month because I will be away at work most of the month.

I edit my photos to 700 pixels wide, this does that they show up totally in the threads, if wider one will have to clich the pic to see it all, I then upload to Photobucket keeping the same folders and folder names as I have in my computer, in Photobucket I choose the pic I want to publish, copy the direct link, and click the film strip above in the reply window,

A pop up window appears, choose "from URL", past the link you copied in Photobucket, and you pic will show like above, you can post as many pics you want in a reply, take look here

I finally got the news I've been waiting for. The previous owner of my B&O system found 2 more S80.2 speakers in his storage house. He originally gave me one when I picked up the system. He remembered having four speakers but wasn't sure. I thought he said they were most likely in the attic which wouldn't have been a ideal place, especially in south Louisiana heat. Well he found them wrapped in plastic in one of the bedrooms. Can't wait to get home from work and pick them up. Been dying to listen to more than the one speaker I have.  I have the caps and foam to restore one of them. He doesn't know what happened to the fourth speaker and assured me its not in his possession anymore. So I am a very happy beoman!!

I have a delima and question. First I went pick up what I thought were two more S80.2 speakers, but they turned out to be some old garbage fisher speakers. Totally bummed me out. So back to my question will it hurt my BM5000 to run one speaker? If it's ok then do I just use either left or right with balance adjusted to either side all the way. I just am so ready to set this up permenantly.
