Hello,

Sorry if my english sounds weird. I am french (not an excuse but an explanation ;-) and I prefer to post my question in Beoworld US forum since real experts seem to be there.

My problem is the following : I don't know how to connect my Beoplay A9 1st Gen thru DLNA. This BA9 supports DLNA, right ?

All my music files are stored on a NAS (Qnap TS 251). My media server is Plex 9 (v 9.11) and is installed on the NAS. Of course, NAS, BA9 are connected to the same network. But Plex 9 doesn't see the BA9.

Can anyone help before this turns me mad ?

Thx

Hi Delacaff and welcome to Beoworld.

First of all - don't hesitate to ask your question in french. There are several guys on the forum, who speak french, and who  certainly know about these things too.

You have the 'server' (on the NAS with the files) and the 'player' (the A9) - now you need a 'control point' (a software running on a PC/Mac or on a tablet, Android or iOS.

This is how DLNA works!!!

Of course all of these three components must be on the same network.

The 'control point' - a software - has a user interface, that lets you 'see' the files on the NAS/see how they are organized. And it lets you see, which (DLNA) player is available on your network.

This way you can those the files/the music, and you can choose, where you want it to be played.

Hope this helps!

Would be nice, if you could tell, which hardware (PC/Mac/tablet...) you have. Then further instruction will be easier.

Hello MM,

Thanks for your prompt reply. My hardwares are all iOS (iPad and iPhone). The media server is Plex version 9.11. Plex is installed on my iOS devices. Alex media center / server is on a NAS.

Hi and welcome to Beoworld.

I don't have the A9 but do have other DLNA devices so can't comment on the specific set-up of the A9.  I assume you have the user guide?  If not, here it is, as well as FAQ's in French and other languages which may explain how to set-up the connection:

OK, so how exactly have you tried to make the connection between your iOS devices and the A9?  Those devices should 'see' the A9 if it is all set-up correctly.

What have you done so far?

Certainly with the Playmaker (similar system), just pushing the 'airplay' symbol on my iPad when my music files are displayed is all it takes.

Dave.

Hello MM & Dave,

I now know why it is not working. It's because... it can't work !!!

Remember that PLEX is my media center. Files are stored on a NAS where PLEX media server is managing my music content. PLEX App are on my iPad/Phone and as a matter of fact, PLEX streams content (music) from NAS to my iOS devices.

The tricky thing is that PLEX can relay what you is streamed on your iDevices from the NAS, up to B&O A9 via.... AirPlay. Yes, PLEX is supporting Airplay on its App. It is not a classic UpnP solution as XMBC or Twonky are. No chance I could ever find an UpnP section on these Apps !!!

Plex is a great media managing system. It is very user oriented but guidelines are so poorly designed that I had to spend hours here and there to find the solution (saying that, the bug is often between the chair and the computer, isn't it ?)

Anyway, problem solved. Thanks for your kind help. If interested in PLEX, I now can share pro / con's and configuration for B&O AirPlay devices.

Cheers

Hello Dave & MM,

I found the solution. The problem was on PLEX side. Actually, it is not a problem but a function that I had little chance I could find it while trying to configure the Upnp.

PLEX App are.... Airplay compliant. In other words, that's why there are no Upnp section on PLEX Apps as one would find on PPlay for instance.

When you playback music from PLEX App, the playback page feature an Airplay symbol where B&O 19 appears (as Apple TV will and any other devices supporting AP).

Problem solved. Thx for your help and interest in my problem

Maybe you have already settled with the solution/s, that you already have, but you should know, the the Plex server indeed can serve as a DLNA compatible server:

https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200350536-DLNA

https://www.qnap.com/i/in/product/model.php?II=142

With the DLNA option enabled you should be able to see both the server and the player in apps like the 8Player or the PlugPlayer (from the Apple iOS App Store).

Using AirPlay from within the Plex app is indeed an option, but since you just mentioned DLNA as a question, I did not comment on that in my post above.

Using 'the DLNA way' with one of the mentioned apps will minimize the wireless traffic on your network, since the (DLNA) app on the iDevice only acts as a remote for the system.

Hello MM,

Yes, you are absolutely right. I started with DLNA option since I ignored that Plex was AirPlay compliant (actually, the seamless philosophy of the platform is prioritizing AP on its devices). I will dig into your links so that I will get the final answers on this DNLA thing.

Again, thank you for your prompt responses. Have a nice week-end.

I could never get my Plex to recognise my Sony uPnP / DLNA.

I am glad you got AirPlay working .... I might try that route when I have spare time ( I do AirPlay from the Plex app on the iPad but I presume you mean AirPlay from the server end)

the Plex app is the userinterface for the Plex server (running somewhere on the network.

From the app you can play, what the server distributes - and you can AirPlay it too.

The Plex app, however is not a DLNA control point, and therefore can't recogize any DLNA server.

For that you need an app like the two, I mentioned above - PlugPlayer or 8Player.

Did you ever try one of these?

Hello Elephant,

I meant Airplay from the App.
