Hello all,

Ages ago I posted in the old forums how to fix a Beolink 1000 that has suddenly stopped working and I thought it was worth repeating (along with a new diagram to help).

You simply take out the batteries and short the + & - terminals. A piece of wire or a paper-clip will do the trick. You won't see or hear anything happen but it seems to reset something in the remote.

I can't take credit for the fix as it was a chap called Frank in the Yahoo Forums/Beolist who originally suggested it and I found it via a web search. All I can say is it worked for me and at least 3 others (who confirmed this in in reply to my suggestion on the old forum post.)

Another handy trick to see if any remote is sending out the IR signal, is to point it at a digital camera (mobile phone camera) and press a number button (they always output IR) and you should see the emitters blink red/purple in the camera screen. (works with all IR remotes)

Stoobie,

I tried your trick and I still could not get the remote to function.  I have other Beolinks 1000 remotes that if I hit "menu" and say "radio" then the remote starts functioning.  You will see a light next to the volume blink.  Also with the Beomaster off you can hit "link" & "6" and the remote will function for a limited time.  On this particular remote I can not get it to function even though I see the infrared signal thru the camera trick.

Any suggestions?

Hi BMK,

I'm not sure I can help because I have not used a Beolink 1000 for a long time and cannot remember how it works now. What Beomaster do you have? Are all your Beolink 1000 the same version? Not Video, Audio or AV Terminals which look the same as Beolink 1000s (Take a look here for more info). The reason I ask is that I do not remember what the MENU button did if you press Radio. I also did not use the LINK button because I had no link equipment at the time I had my Beolink 1000. I had a Beosystem 4500 and an MX8000 with 4 Beolab Penta speakers.

Are you saying this Beolink 1000 does not control any of your B&O equipment but you have others that work OK?

So with this one you press "RADIO" and you will see it flash through the camera, but it will not turn the radio on when you try?

But you have another Beolink 1000 that if you press "RADIO" you will see it flash through the camera and it  WILL turn on the radio?

Other than suggesting you change the batteries, I'm not sure what to suggest. (do not use rechargeable batteries in your remotes).

My remote is functioning again, so thank you.

A bit of both your suggestions worked. There's no menu button on mine. But just pressing Radio on the remote worked (I never use the radio on my 3500 separates system. Now all functions are working from remote.

I tried Link & 6 but that didn't help to control my CD or Beogram - could have reset something so the Radio worked, though.

Anyway, thank you - I have had this since it was a baby. The only problem has ever been the cassette player seizing up and chewing tapes, so it's mouldering in the loft now.

By the way why does someone say on this thread not to use rechargeables? Some problem?

Hi Neil,

Glad that helped.

As far as using rechargeable batteries, in the early days thoughts were - it makes much more sense to use traditional alkaline batteries for low-draw devices like your wall clocks, radios, smoke detectors, programmable thermostats, and remote controls because they lose power at a much slower rate than rechargeable batteries. I'm not sure nowadays as I believe the batteries have come a long way and I think there may even be specific ones for slow discharge uses.

Use Lithium batteries (Energizer etc). They will last forever in a Beolink.

Hello Stoobie,

I've tried this and I've had no success. I also tried to see the emitters working with my iPhone camera, but no sign of life. I would have tried some of the other fixes suggested but I don't have some of those buttons – there is no menu button. Link and then 6 didn't work. I find this very odd as the remote was working fine until some 14 years ago when I retired it (having a later version with a Beovision 7) and took the batteries out. Does it need a constant battery presence?

My dealer has told me the remote won't work unless my Beocenter 9500 has a powerlink speaker connected. I'm dubious of this since it has never had active speakers connected. I was using it with Redlines until I retired it.

Everything seems to point to a dead remote but I don't understand why?

Any other pointers would be welcome.

Many thanks.

Just a quick point. If an iPhone then you need to use the selfie camera to see the IR lights. The main camera does not show IR.

And you are correct in that the BC 9500 does not need Powerlink speakers in order to receive IR.  Your dealer is getting confused with Beosound 9000.

Hello again stoobie,

I've tried your shorting trick again, this time with a length of wire with plenty of exposed copper. Still nothing. I am testing this with nothing connected to the 9500 at all, not even speakers. Should it still work? Does anything have to be connect to the 9500 for it to work?

I've tried again with the camera trick too, still nothing. I've tried with another remote and I can see the emitters working so the test works, but my remote has failed it.

I'm fairly convinced my remote is dead, so I've checked the battery terminals. Looking at your diagram, the plate that spans two batteries on the bottom left has a degree of movement in it. I have tried to increase the grip on the batteries which feels slight, as well as jiggling the batteries about but I can't get it to do anything.

If I'm right in my assumption about the 9500 not needing to have any connections, that effectively proves the remote needs a repair or a replacement.

Thanks again for your previous help.

Hi SJF,

I'm sorry I can't be any more help. I haven't had a Beolink 1000 for about 15 years.

This link may help. https://archivedforum2.beoworld.org/forums/p/35335/262210.aspx Try the suggestions in there re cleaning the terminals and then do the "shorting" of the terminals again. Are you using good fresh batteries?

As far as controlling the 9500 goes, it should work without Powerlink speakers connected but that alone doesn't prove the remote needs repair / replacement. The lack of emitter flashing is a more reliable sign the remote is not working because it doesn't matter what is or isn't plugged in if the remote is not working.

Having said that, if the remote is working, the 9500 could be in the wrong option setting if it is not responding.

I don't suppose you can borrow a working B&O remote to check the 9500 is working properly.

Always great to hear that a classic  piece of equipment is saved. Glad the trick worked.
