The BC9000 I have recently acquired did not come with its azimuth adjustment tape. Reading the manuals, these seem to suggest that the head design means that, providing I am only playing tapes that I have recorded myself, the azimuth adjustment will have no effect. Is this correct?

Yes of course, provided it is not too off. But when you have other Beocords you will be happy to be able to play your tapes on those too!

If you could find a good pre-recorded, that would be ideal. I find that Deutsche Gramophon tapes are pinpoint accurate.
