Has anybody tried using VNC or remote desktop to control your BM5 while in service mode?

I'm thinking about doing some software tinkering, and it would be a lot more convenient to access from my office desktop rather than from a physical keyboard connected to my BM5/BS5.  Does the embedded XP even support remote desktop?

Thanks in advance,

Stan

Hi,

I suggest using TeamViewer. Works flawlessly. There will show up one or two error messages during installation but you can ignore them.
Windows RDP is not enabled and can not be accessed.

What do you want to "tinker"? Maybe we can help...

I can confirm VNC works too.

As a hint - when navigating the BM5 menu remotely (or indeed via a keyboard attached to the BM5), the 'R' key is equivalent to pressing the MENU button on a beo4, so to enter service menu from your remote connection you would press 'R' '9' '0' '0' 'Enter'.

Tried VNC twice on BM5. Worked for a while, but for some reason it suddenly stopped working (I mean the BM5).

Had to perform a restoration each time. I'm not trying it again.

Have no clue why it doesn't work on BM5. Perhaps because it is attached to a BS5?

I'm also using a BM1. Here VNC works perfectly.

Hi Griebel,

Out of curiosity, which vnc software were you using? I've had TightVNC installed on my BM5 for around a year without any issues. I have a BS5 attached too so this hasn't caused any issue for me. I do see the BS5 display side by side with the BM5 display when I connect (if the BM5 is not in desktop service mode), and whilst I can't interact with the BS5 display remotely, I have found this useful at times to see what is playing when I can't be bothered to go to the room where the BS5 is located.

Martin.

My BM5/BS5 isn't set up at the moment (packed away whilst building works are going on) but I'll see if I can work out a way around that once it's back in place.

Thank you everyone for the information.   I plan to install Spotify connect (following the instructions in the other thread).  One of my reasons for wanting remote access (aside from the obvious convenience) is I only have an apple keyboard to connect to it.  This can be a little bothersome.  All my windows machines are laptops.
