Good day.
I am new to this forum. I have picked up a Beogram cd 5500 and a Beocord 5500 that have been sitting in a corner a long while and the owner did not know if it works. The Beocord 5500 works, but unfortunately not the cd player which is of my main interest.
In looking through the forum I guess I have to replace the capacitors and I would be interested in purchasing a capacitor kit. But the problem this Beogram has is particular and, unless mistaken, I have not seen it in the forum and it may give a clue to the experts out there. So here it goes:
I have seen it work once fine after plugging it in (not the first time). The drawer closes and opens normally and after displaying "track" the numbers show up and it plays the cd. It suddenly stopped and shows a little red light. Once in this state, when you press on "open" the drawer comes out halfway, stops for a few seconds and then comes out fully. During the pause, the engine is not heard spinning, but after having pushed out the drawer fully, one can still hear the engine spinning. If you press again the "open" button it tries to push out the drawer more instead of closing it. Pushing the drawer will not have it close automatically.
As mentioned, I have this since a few days and powered it up about 7 times and had it work only once. That was after that I cleaned a bit the contacts next to the drawer that seem to indicate open and close state. But I guess that had nothing to do with the sudden good working for about a little minute or so.
Not sure this gives a clue of what is wrong with the player or that it is best to start replacing the capacitors in the power section which can not do any harm as they seem to be at the end of their lives anyway. I would like to get this machine back in good working order to listen to the much reputed sound.
I live in the southwest of France. If anyone knows of a good repair person in this area I would be interested. Otherwise I will use this as a testbed to improve my soldering skills.
The player is of 1987 of type 5131 if that is of help.
Many thanks in advance for your help and counsel
It has taken me almost 5 months, but I finally got the Beogram cd 5500 working.
First I took a long time to understand the problem. It seemed less likely to work when the temperatures were cold. And since we entered the summer it had the tendency to work most of the time. It also seemed to work every time when the PCB was in the vertical service position. At first I thought that the solder of a big component, like that of a capacitor, was no good and that by gravity it would make contact. But touching the components would not make it fail.
Then I focused on the cable that transits from the transformer to the PCB. Looking at the soldering with a 4X magnifying glass it was possible to discern cracks. I soldered them again and that seems to have done the trick. Thus the machine is otherwise in stock form. The capacitors still look good and for the time being I am not going to replace any of them.
Now I can take some time to compare it to a Marantz CD 63 MK-2 KI Signature. If the legend is true, it should be much better.
Happy Beo to you all
Well done then!

Yes it is an excellent player.
I got mine with a shorted PSU cap, a bad zener and finally I had to get rid of the transformer thermal protection.
It has worked for many years since then. I have always wondered what’s under the metal box!
Good day and sorry for late answer.
Simple answer : I sold my Marantz CD 63 MK-2 KI Signature player.
To be honest, the differences were smaller than expected. Both are nice to listen too. I had the opportunity of playing the Marantz against a Pioneer PD S06 and although both play all the details, the Marantz is more enjoyable to listen too.
Both the Marantz and Beo 5500 are enjoyable to listen too and I would say that the Beo 5500 has more details, less fuzzy.
I have now 2 Beo 5500 CD players, but their suspension is almost dead. On one I added a small rubber pad beneath the rubbers to have more clearance. I wonder if someone with a 3D printer could recreate one with the flex material, like Ninjaflex or similar.
Have a good day
I think Martin aka Dillen has them.
Working on them (and not 3D-printing anything).Prototype testing next week if things go as planned, so hopefully soon ready. There are more to these supports than meets the eye.

Hi,
I'm looking for 2 sets of the suspension rubbers for the CD5500 and found your forum. My original machine (from new) has badly decomposed rubbers and needs attention but I have recently acquired another hoping possibly to use it as a donor however this machine has already had some really poor modifications made around the suspension.
A little work and the second machine is now working despite the modification hence the need for 2 sets.
Have you made any progress in making/ sourcing a solution if so I'd be grateful for some.
I am a service engineer (now partially retired) of many years experience working with B&O (80's and 90's) amongst others so no problems with the technical stuff.
Regards
Adrian
I have exacly the same probleme, wich cable exactly do you mean and Where did you solder ?
thank you
