Hi
I am new to the forum and to B &O but have just ordered a Moment and a pair of A8 speakers. I have a host of questions regarding how I can set up the system and would be grateful for any advice or help. At present I have a collection of 500-600 mainly classical CDs played on a traditional hiding and an ITunes account with a mixture of purchased and cd copies in it that I play in the car or through a Zeppllin. I am hoping that the moment will replace these. I would like to rip all my CDs to a hard drive at the highest quality ( AIFF, FLAC, ???) and to keep the capability of playing the lesser quality mp3s too. I would prefer to have my collection on a hard drive which is always on so that I do not need to turn on my computer to play music. I have yet to buy the drive so recommendations are welcome. Any advice and help on software for ripping the CDs would be great too. Whilst I am quite tech savvy, I am completely new to streaming music.
Many thanks in advance for any help......

Hi and welcome to Beoworld,
a bunch of questions there!
Let me try to shed some light into this.
There are lots of different software to rip CD's - do tell us which OS you are using!
Ripping includes storing 'tags' (Artist, album name, cover pictue etc) in the files, which are used when streaming to a device like the Moment or to the A8.
The streaming protocol, which is used with the Moment/theA8 is called DLNA.
This means, that you will have to have a DLNA compatible server running on your network.
The Twonky Media server is one of these - and this is the one, that is recommended from B&O. But you could use another instead.
You must - In the settings of this software - allow it access to your files, that are stored somewhere on your home network.
The server then builts an index (based on the tags/cover picture), that is used by the Moment to connect to the files/play the files.
If you have a look at some of the threads about the BS Moment on the forum, you will see many discussions on this subject - on which server is best etc...
You wrote 'on a hard drive' - do you mean a hard drive, that you can connect directly to a PC/Mac, or do you mean a networked hard drive/a NAS?
Please tell us a bit more about you infrastructure = home network, router, the OS, that you mainly use, if you have a tablet/smart phone (which one/s)....
If you are on a MAC/on iOS airplaying might be a better way of streaming for you with the A8.
If you are a 'PC-guy' you must concentrate on DLNA.

There is a tv - and there is a BV
Welcome Skiingtrumpeter
Your B&0 dealer should help you to use your BeoSound Moment.
Please see the folder titled BeoSound Moment.
It is a long treatise but very complete. Enjoy
Here's some useful tips:
Get a NAS drive that supports DLNA, B&O recommends Iomega/Lenovo EMC and Qnap. Store all your ripped music here and add the music server on the BeoSound Moment
Can I listen to my iTunes music library on BeoSound Moment? Yes, you can. However, to do so, you must install the media server software on your PC or Mac. For further information, see www.bang-olufsen.com/mediaserver .
BeoVision 11-55, BeoCenter 2, BeoLab 9s, BeoLab 3s, Beo4/5/6, BeoRemote One, BLGW, Transmitter 1, BeoLit 12, A8, H6, H8

... have just ordered a Moment and a pair of A8 speakers.
Sorry to ask - does that mean, that you have no speakers for the BS Moment???
Thanks for your prompt replies! Apologies if these questions appear in other threads- I have looked at them but as I am unfamiliar with quite a lot of the terminology and acronyms, I am still a bit confused. Perhaps if I explain what I am hoping to achieve it might help....
At present, I have a traditional hi-fi system ( cd, amp, turntable and speakers) in my living room. I run a MacBook, IPad and IPhone which are linked by ICloud and also backed up on a Time Machine. The wireless router and Time Machine are located in the hallway. I am hoping that I can replace the hi-if in the living room with the Moment and A8 speakers and that my cd collection could reside on a NAS which would be located in the hall next to the router.
In other words, the Moment and A8 speakers would only be connected to the mains by their respective cables and would communicate wirelessly with the NAS and router in the hall. I have practiced ripping a few CDs with DBpoweramp into a folder on my MacBook desktop to get to grips with the meta data etc.
My plan was to buy an External Hard drive ( I had been looking at a Western Digital MyBook Duo) and to copy the music folder to that drive. If the drive is DLNA compliant, would I need my computer to be on and connected to the network or can the Moment grab the files from the drive directly? Also, is there a particular structure of files that is necessary? Eg If I have a folder called Puccini with includes several operas which also each have several Acts or sections, will the Moment handle it ok? I am keen to have my CD collection replicated at the highest quality possible for playback on the Moment and A8s.
I hope this clarifies my questions a little more and thanks again for any further help......
Hi Skiingtrumpeter,
with A8 you must mean S8!?
The A8 is a standalone speaker/dockingstation for iDevices.
The S8 is a set of speakers with a subwoofer and two satelites.
1:
In case of S8 you just connect the cables to the Moment - you will have to set it up telling it which kind of speakers, you use.
Both devices will need power.
The Moment an connect wirelessly to your network, but - if possible - you should you a cable instead.
2:
As far as I remember, the WD MyBook Duo has a TwonkyMedia server installed, respectively it is possible to install one on it.
You should usethe version suggested by B&O - you'll need a licece key.
Be sure to disable any other (if any) DLNA server running on the MyBook.
It is not that much the question, 'if the Moment will handle your Puccini opera's' - it is much more the question, whether the server does it.
Unfortunately not all DLNA servers are capable of doing the job - use the Twonky!
It also depends very much on the tags (metadata/info), that are used for ripping the CD's.
Perhaps someone, who uses the Moment with classical music, could give you some tip on this.
DBPoweramp is generally regarded as very powerfull, but you should read about what ripping, tags etc is, before you start ripping all of your CD's - do some testing for a start.
It is not a 'Plug'n'Play process, and you will have to do things carefull. Especially by classical music, you might have to do some manual corrections with tags, especially with the coverpics.
The structure is - based on the tags - created in the ripping software. But it is always good to have a carefully made file structure - in case you a looking for something special to copy or replace....
You should rip to FLAC, since that will give you lossless versions/files of your music.
If your files are located on the WD with TwonkyMedia running, your computer does not have to be on.
Hope this helps a bit.
Thanks again for your continued help and advice. I'm so sorry, I meant BeoLab 18 when I was referring to speakers. You have cleared up a lot of confusion...Thanks

Don't worry it's all good.
If you are wanting to replace your traditional hi-fi system with something more modern then the Moment is for you. As you have your CD collection already ripped in iTunes you can utilise this.
You have 2 main options:
1. Utilise your current setup with your MacBook and install the Twonky software on to your MacBook
2. Purchase a NAS drive and store a copy of your media on that.
With Option 1:
> you will retain all your music on your current MacBook and then it's easy to sync up your iPhone and iPad
> If you purchase any music from iTunes it is automatically downloaded
> You have to have your MacBook powered on for it to work
With Option 2:
> you can simply drag and drop your iTunes folder on to the NAS drive. this is what I do. I use a WD MyCloud. It has a twonky server built in, so i don't have to install the twonky software on my Mac/PC
> you can decide to store your iTunes library solely on the MyCloud, but that's not really necessary
> if you decide later to purchase a B&O TV or even another branded smart TV, you can decide to install movies on there if you want and access those as it has a decent storage capacity
> You could even just purchase a USB hard drive and drag and drop your music on to that and (can anyone assist ??) plug that in to the Moment (I'm not sure if thats possible), but I do that with the BeoVision Avant and it works a treat - it's like a NAS except it's not always powered on
> Like Option 1, the NAS will have to be powered on, but your computer will not need to be powered on as the Moment is accessing the NAS drive
> There is no particular file structure, just drag and drop : prior to doing so check your settings and change it to the highest possible quality
Kind regards
Michael.

You can not use the USB port that way.
